Batman Begins is the best superhero movie so far, and this might just top it.

And for the record Brokeback Mountain was a great flick.

Meh for me.

The only part I sorta liked was when Maggie G kinda hit Joker and he sorta mocked her and then Bats appeared and said "Then you're gonna love me" or something.

However, I am very much anticipating how Nolan and the writers will approach/conceptualize Catwoman, if they ever include her in a future sequel.

Never mention the words "Catwoman" and "sequel" in the same sentence ever again.

I don't know, I prefer the gloomy brilliant detective Batman to the "look at my crazy-ass machinery" Batman. I could do without the tank-like Batmobile, the batcycle, etc. Ledger sounds great, though.

Thanx for the link. I've been waiting ALL DAY for Warner Bros to finally put this up today, ha ha!

He was in there for a bit right before the first shot of Rachel.

Awesome trailer and Ledger's gonna rock as the Joker. Hopefully he'll smile a bit more though. Except for the painted on smile he seems to be a bit too "serious" himself...

I have to be honest; I'm not impressed with this trailer. Heath Ledger seems to be trying to channel Nicholson instead of making the character his own.

Really? I hated Jack's Joker because it played to Heavy on the camp. I don't even See the woods here. The Burton version was a Criminal with a Shtick. This version is Much more in line with they Psychotic crazy off the wall version that I love.

I'm running through all of Jack's dialogue in my head, and the one of the only lines I hear the similarities is the "Hello Benny, it's your Uncle Bingo" line. And really, it's not even that. A very small similarity.

ITYM it points out in several occasions that Tim Burton's cinematic conception of Batman was unique and not totally anchored in anyone else's previous versions.

It's fine not to like it, but come on. Of course, I'm biased, since I was 11 when it came out, had just gotten into comics, and thought the movie was The Best Thing Ever. Even the Prince soundtrack.

I agree with Alex K. To me, it feels nothing like Nicholson's Joker--in the best way possible. If anything, it feels like Ledger's channeling Johnny Depp in the role.

And my guess about the makeup is that someone sliced his mouth up and so he wears the makeup to sort of 'own' the look--if someone carves a smile on your face, might as well become a clown. I think the makeup looks fucking awesome--messy and disturbing.

Oh, and the trailer fucking rules.

Oh, dude, come on, I appreciate the shit out of this movie. I can proudly say that because the movie came out not long after my birth (a year, maybe) my earliest memory is the Bat-Symbol. Which is still my favorite thing about myself, because it is awesome and weird that I remember that as young as I was. I always loved the movie, but I just came to dislike a lot of the story's elements as I learned more about Batman and became more interested in the character.

I'm so psyched for this film! Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but it looks as if Gordon becomes commissioner in this right? With all the cops standing in the street...looks like they're attending a funeral. So my assumption is that Joker kills the commish and Gordon rises in the ranks.

It looks like the Joker and Commissioner Loeb in the "Why so serious?" part...

Looks amazing. Ledger looks completely on. But I'm a little worried that they're making the same mistake as Burton's Batman by making this completely about the Joker and not Batman.

This is probably because THE JOKER IS A MORE INTERESTING CHARACTER.

Sorry. I've just been hearing that about the 89 film for close to 20 years, and I'm worried I'll be hearing the same about this. The Joker is the most compelling villain in comics history, and there's NOTHING wrong with giving him more screen time. I can't understand why its a 'mistake.'

A villain should never steal the hero's spotlight for an entire story. It's bullshit storytelling. A Batman movie should be about Batman. That's one of the things I hated the most about the original movies. It became a spotlight for campy acting by hollywood stars. And it's all Burton's fault since he started the trend.

Oh, and I'm really looking forward to this.

Yeah it really is. I love it. As for focusing more on the Joker. I think the movie will be able to do both. In previous Batman movies (with the exception of Begins), the focus has always been more on the villains as we know. But in Begins, think about how many stories and subplotss were going on, Rachel and her work and relationship with Bruce, Bruce's past and it's effect on what is going on now, Batman fighting crime, Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul, Bruce's financial interests, Bruce's relationship with Alfred, Gordon and his relationship with Batman, the Joe Chill incident, Bruce becoming Batman. Now not all these "plots" were given a huge amount of film-time, but all were touched on.

I guess my point is this. These writers (the Nolan brothers) are not third-rate, hack writers. They are quality, and I have no doubt they will be able to still have plenty of focus on Batman/Bruce as well as being able to focus on the Joker. I still think that while the Joker will be around, the emotional focus will be on how the Joker's actions affects Bruce.

I don't see how the Joker is a more interesting or compelling character. He is more entertaining, definitely, and I'm all for him grabbing the spotlight, since Batman is a pretty terrible character anyway, but I wouldn't call him more compelling. He's barely a 'character', I'd say. He's more of a caricature. Which is fun, don't get me wrong.

and since we've all agreed that this series of Bat Films are more realistic, do ya'll want a Two-Face whose face is discolored and scarred, or just heavily scarred?

What's the difference between the two options you laid out? You can do some pretty realistic heavy scarring and still have a very Two-Face looking character.

I can't wait to see a machine gun wielding Aaron Eckhart killing mob bosses, etc.

Which is fun, don't get me wrong.

that's how i've always felt

it's just a visual thing.
in most Bat-related things, Two-Face has like, a radically different colored side of his face (comics, cartoons, movies, games).
I'm just wonderin if the character would still have the same skin color, but just look like shit on the left side.

There is something that Im absolutely loving about Ledger's joker...and its really hard to put into words.

With every line he says, you can tell he is acting....but I dont mean that in the bad actor sense, but its more like hes acting in his own play....like he is being dramatic for his own sake, to match the situations hes created.

I know that probably makes no sense....but whatever it is, Im lovin it.

One thing that occurred to me is the genius of WB in really being on their game and ensuring that the Dark Knight trailer didn't make it online prior to Sunday night.

Do you know how many people were probably on the fence about seeing I Am Legend but were sold based on the promise that there would be a Dark Knight trailer beforehand????

I fucking guarantee you that not letting the trailer be seen until Sunday night ensured a shitload more green to the Will Smith box office gross.

I LOVE that there doesn't look like any CG. If there is any, it's minimal and sparingly and wisely used. But everything looks real, including the end-over-end truck. Awesome.

I'm pretty sure it's lipstick OVER scarring.

I agree, it always looks better when as much of the effects as possible are done without CGI.

The only thing I noticed which looked like CGI in the trailer was that the Batman on a rooftop shot looked a bit unfinished. The sky behind him looked too clean, like they just put up a big wall with a bluish color on it and merged that with a helicopter shot of Batman on the building.

The truck scene on the otherhand looked great. Somebody captured this when they were filming it: YouTube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=kJmEZe3ICpY) Nice to see the finished shot.

I know that's why I went to see it in IMAX. I figured the trailer would be up (and in HD), but I had to see that 6 minute preview in IMAX and then ended up liking 'I am Legend' quite a bit too. All around a great night at the movies!

I loved the rocket launcher.

Loved when he turned around with the up camera angle.

Really loved the scene where he was about to cut Rachel and Bat's showed up.

Fav was him with the machine gun and in his crazed rage yells "HIT ME!"

Sold me right there. Loved it. It was a high octane rework of the Burton Joker vs Batman in the street but with out the rediculous gun from the pats and no batplane.

So much excitement for this.

that opening shot of Bruce in the penthouse with the suit half off, holding the cowel... great mood setter. This is the coming of age movie for Batman. Here we get to see the real hero behind the machines and fancy toys.

I haven't heard anything about 'The Final Sacrifice' coming out on DVD seperate or as part of a set. While I hate to give him any credit, Elder Ethan Vanz is usually up on his MST3K news (old and new), it may be worth posting that as a seperate thread/question for his response and input.

I really don't see him at all. Had I not known that was him before I watched this trailer, I would've thought it was some no-name up-and-coming guy. That look after "Hello, commissioner" is spot on, but not like Ledger at all.

Agreed. I dont really care about Dent at this point. The end of "Begins" got me juiced for Joker. This trailer shows me he is indeed back in a big and real way. It also shows me that Bruce/Bats is not doing well. Has to work out of an appartment with suprizingly low celings. LOL

After watching the trailer, I made a few observations:

1) This Joker has a "Chelsea smile/Glasgow grin." He paints lipstick over the scars to create the sick scarred clown smile

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_smile

2) The Joker's voice-over hits an excellent theme that I think will be the psychological subtext for the film. Batman came onto the scene first as the "first costume." In the V.O. the Joker points out that when Wayne puts on the "freak" suit, Wayne opened the floodgates for all of the other socio-paths to take on a larger-than-life persona, cults of personality. This will torture Batman's conscience, make him second guess what he has done by donning the cowl.

Did Batman create the Joker? The Joker in the V.O. is saying exactly that. That theme is one of my favorites in the comic books. Which came first: the Batman or the Joker? This means no camp whatsoever. It will be very "dark." I love it.

It just really gets me pumped. There was all of that pre-production talk about why they called it "The Dark Knight," and after seeing this preview it makes so much sense.

I don't even want to see a Joker origin. I just want the Joker to appear as the perfect foil for the Batman, and for the Batman to totally lose his shit about the can of worms he has now opened.
