I had to start a whole thread to cover my obsession with different covers of Van Morrison's biggest hit, "Gloria":

http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?t=132014&highlight=g-l-o-r-i-a

Some other stuff:

Really love The Hacienda Brothers covering the old, mellow soul classic, "Cowboys to Girls."

Sinead O'Conner on the reggae tune, "Curley Locks."

"Hard to Handle", originally I think by Otis Redding, has some great covers. Off the top of my head, I really dig Toots Hibbert's version and Tony Joe White's version

Buddy Guy's cover of "Mustang Sally" - definitely a rocker.

Tori Amos has some great covers:
Purple Rain
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Led Zeppelin's Thank You
Bruce Springstein's I'm On Fire
Losing My Religion

The Ataris have a great version of 'Boys of Summer'

A band called 'Face To Face' did a great cover of INXS 'Don't Change' on the album Standards and Practices, but the original is still awesome.

And lastly, Groove Coverage has a bouncy dance cover of Alice Cooper's Poison that is twenty times more awesome than the laughable original ever was.

There is a local band here in Indy called the Leisure Kings. They do weekly shows at a bar in town, and do some other shows periodically.

They are hilarious and quite talented. It is just two guys, the singer and the keyboardist. They are similar to Richard Cheese, but I have no idea when either group started.

You can download several mp3s from their website, and they also have a CD of songs.

http://www.leisurekings.com/

The singer for the group used to be the lead singer of another local band, Johnny Socko, that did a number of covers, most notably of Journey songs. The man can sound eerily like Steve Perry. They even did a few shows as a Journey cover band, Wheel In The Sky.

Placebo's cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" is pretty much ruling my world right now.

I'm never the guy who's first to discover anything on the music front, so I'm only minorly embarassed to say I came upon that cover in the trailer for Ken Burns documentary, The War. And yes, became obsessed with both it and the original for a while.

Hank III version of Bruce Springsteens "Atlantic City"
He makes it his own song, but keeps the soul, heart, and desperation of it intact. It was actually my gateway into loving the boss. After I learned it was a cover, I hunted down Nebraska, and the rest is history.
