I'd use a thick beef broth as a base, but I might throw in some diced tomatoes. Yes on the steak, sirloin, onions, (bacon? really?), throw it in the slow cooker for a few hours. Serve in a crock with a buttermilk biscuit and a thick layer of cheese and those crispy onion curls melted on top. Steak fries on the side. :>
Good lord.
Nope. Both Subarus. And I think I gave up the hippie status when I chopped off my 4 foot dreadlocks 4 years ago.

Hear Voices? It May Be an Ad
An A&E Billboard 'Whispers' a Spooky Message Audible Only in Your Head in Push to Promote Its New 'Paranormal' Program
By Andrew Hampp
Published: December 10, 2007
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- New Yorker Alison Wilson was walking down Prince Street in SoHo last week when she heard a woman's voice right in her ear asking, "Who's there? Who's there?" She looked around to find no one in her immediate surroundings. Then the voice said, "It's not your imagination."
No, he's not crazy: Our intrepid reporter Andrew Hampp ventures to SoHo to hear for himself the technology that has New Yorkers 'freaked out' and A&E buzzing.
Indeed it isn't. It's an ad for "Paranormal State," a ghost-themed series premiering on A&E this week. The billboard uses technology manufactured by Holosonic that transmits an "audio spotlight" from a rooftop speaker so that the sound is contained within your cranium. The technology, ideal for museums and libraries or environments that require a quiet atmosphere for isolated audio slideshows, has rarely been used on such a scale before. For random passersby and residents who have to walk unwittingly through the area where the voice will penetrate their inner peace, it's another story.
Ms. Wilson, a New York-based stylist, said she expected the voice inside her head to be some type of creative project but could see how others might perceive it differently, particularly on a late-night stroll home. "I might be a little freaked out, and I wouldn't necessarily think it's coming from that billboard," she said.
Less-intrusive approach?
Joe Pompei, president and founder of Holosonics, said the creepy approach is key to drawing attention to A&E's show. But, he noted, the technology was designed to avoid adding to noise pollution. "If you really want to annoy a lot of people, a loudspeaker is the best way to do it," he said. "If you set up a loudspeaker on the top of a building, everybody's going to hear that noise. But if you're only directing that sound to a specific viewer, you're never going to hear a neighbor complaint from street vendors or pedestrians. The whole idea is to spare other people."
Holosonics has partnered with a cable network once before, when Court TV implemented the technology to promote its "Mystery Whisperer" in the mystery sections of select bookstores. Mr. Pompei said the company also has tested retail deployments in grocery stores with Procter & Gamble and Kraft for customized audio messaging. So a customer, for example, looking to buy laundry detergent could suddenly hear the sound of gurgling water and thus feel compelled to buy Tide as a result of the sonic experience.
Mr. Pompei contends that the technology will take time for consumers to get used to, much like the lights on digital signage and illuminated billboards did when they were first used. The website Gawker posted an item about the billboard last week with the headline "Schizophrenia is the new ad gimmick," and asked "How soon will it be until in addition to the do-not-call list, we'll have a 'do not beam commercial messages into my head' list?"
"There's going to be a certain population sensitive to it. But once people see what it does and hear for themselves, they'll see it's effective for getting attention," Mr. Pompei said.
More disruptions
A&E's $3 million to $5 million campaign for "Paranormal" includes other more disruptive elements than just the one audio ad in New York. In Los Angeles, a mechanical face creeps out of a billboard as if it's coming toward the viewer, and then recedes. In print, the marketing team persuaded two print players to surrender a full editorial page to their ads, flipping the gossip section in AM New York upside down and turning a page in this week's Parade into a checkerboard of ads for "Paranormal."
It's not the network's first foray into supernatural marketing, having launched a successful viral campaign for "Mind Freak" star Criss Angel earlier this year that allowed users to trick their friends into thinking Mr. Angel was reading their mind via YouTube.
"We all know what you need to do for one of these shows is get people talking about them," said Guy Slattery, A&E's exec VP-marketing. "It shouldn't be pure informational advertising. When we were talking about marketing the show, nearly everyone had a connection with a paranormal experience, and that was a surprise to us. So we really tried to base the whole campaign on people's paranormal experiences."
So was it a ghost or just an annoyed resident who stole the speaker from the SoHo billboard twice in one day last week? Horizon Media, which helped place the billboard, had to find a new device that would prevent theft from its rooftop location. Mr. Pompei only takes it as a compliment that someone would go to the trouble of stealing his technology, but hopes consumer acceptance comes with time. "The sound isn't rattling your skull, it's not penetrating you, it's not doing anything nefarious at all. It's just like having a flashlight vs. a light bulb," he said.

Every thread is made better with grammar commentary.
The only time it really bothers me is when the thread itself is about the English language, like someone's thread yesterday or the day before about their food order being done wrong because their English wasn't very good. Then someone comes into the thread ranting about illegals not knowing the language being one of the downfalls of society, and it looks like he barely knows the language himself.

I had mentioned wanting to post thoughts about Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me the other day. So I'm going to go ahead and post some comments. Spoilers, obviously.
I'm really glad that I got this film from my Secret Santa. It was worth watching and serves to complete my collection of Twin Peaks on DVD.
That said, I've been mulling it over in my head for a few days now, and I've got to say this:
I didn't like the film all that much compared to the series.
There's nothing in the technical production of the film that's wrong. It's visually experimental. There's lots to chew on here.
But it's a raw film. It's an angry film. It's a violent film. The camera lingers on the nudity so long that it loses impact and instead feels voyeuristic and masochistic. The imagery is disturbing.
What made Twin Peaks so revolutionary as a television series was that it walked that line between surrealist horror and soap opera, with flourishes of comedy. One minute your jaw is on the floor, but the next, you're laughing at the absurd or the bizarre.
This film discards that balance in favor of dark violence and raw anger. It's supposed to be disturbing. It's supposed to be dark. It's the last seven days in Laura Palmer's life, and we know the ending. We know the dark turns she takes. So as an audience, we're left to watch in horror as it all happens.
It just feels like David Lynch is holding his audience captive in this film, asking them to watch violence and horror but promising some deeper meaning that is ultimately unsatisfactory because it's obtuse.
It does fill in gaps. It does let us get to know Laura Palmer. And it does hold the possibility of answering some questions about the Black Lodge and its inhabitants and the meaning of all the various and sundry Lodge scenes from the series.
When we went into the Lodge, I was riveted. I just found myself wishing Lynch had stayed in there more instead of pulling his audience out into the darkness.

I have a friend named Kiel. It's pronounced Kyle. He's never understood what his parents were thinking. I think I like unique spellings. It changes things up a bit, especially with the really common names.

The first application I filled out after that job, under his name in the work history, I actually put (actual spelling). I didn't get called for a job (at least not until after basic training, when it would do me no good), so I quit doing that.
Incidentally, that was the first time I applied to a job at that porn shop. Good pay, too. Just think, if they'd called me before I joined the army, I could be in a completely different place now.

I think you'll know pretty early if Twin Peaks is for you. The tone is pretty consistent throughout. Probably after the pilot and maybe the first episode.

I'll probably have to buy more discs at that point, since Blockbuster made a point of only carrying Blu Ray in stores. They started having some HD DVDs online before that, but I doubt the selection will get very big, if they're adding to it at all now.

The thing is you're going to decide how badly do you want to own a movie now. DVDs are so cheap now I have no problem unloading $5-10 for complete crap. But with HD in the $25-40 range there's going to have to be a significant difference in the experiance to get me to buy an HD version of some movies. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

I get melancholy around Christmas.
Most of you don't know this, but my dad passed away on Christmas Day eight years ago. That converted a holiday that used to inspire joy within me into a marker of my own mortality. And the contemplating my own mortality leads me down the path of thinking about my life thus far, and that leads to regret.
It's not depression, mind you. It's just melancholy about the way things were versus the way they are now. *sigh*
Anyway. Don't mind me. Just felt like sharing. This has been another insight into the miracle that is me. :)

Here's how I see it. Blu-Ray is a simple name. Quick and easy, and has an actual name like Steve.
HD-DVD sounds more like a model number and is like reciting an essay. It's cold and lacking of personality.
No idea how sales are at the minute in other parts of the world but ApparAAAntly Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD by 3 to 1 in Europe at the minte. Yeagh, still early days to be fair.

Also, I won't be entering the HD world withing 3 years even. Way too expensive for not much more from what I can see.
Hopefully I'll be entering that particular world this Christmas or shortly afterwards when I get a PS3.

I didn't even realize that they'd put out the old Die Hards on Blu-Ray until a visit to Target this weekend. Imagine if you will, me discovering the discs on an endcap. I declare that I now need a PS3 and Stacy says something like "blah blah blah negativity and shit" so I grab up the disc, start rubbin' it on my crotch and bellowing, "But Daddy need!"
Nicole does that with Aliens DVDs. And anything with Thomas Jane's face on it. Except Thomas Jane thankfully.

And Duracell could release some called "Ever Ready".

Well said, man.
This is Lynch on Film. Pretty much all of it.
See: Blue Velvet for further examples of this "captivity" you spoke of. :D
I'm glad you liked it, man. It's been years since I've seen it.

I loved Twin Peaks also. I own the previous versions of the DVD set as well as the Canadian Release DVD of the Pilot. I need to get the new box set and Fire Walk with Me. I agree with your "review" though as it's certainly a different sort of take on that mythos.

I agree.
Even though I've seen Blue Velvet countless times, it still has the ability to unsettle me.
My first viewing of Inland Empire freaked me out over the course of several scenes. Really disturbing shit. Lynch's directing wraps the viewer up, and really leaves them alone in their viewing. It's a rough time at points, but ultimately rewarding. To me at least.
This goes to say with most of his film.
I like Lynch's type of disturbed vision better than any intentional shock value movie I've seen.

Yeagh, how much fun we had at O'hare.
I have a friend named Kiel. It's pronounced Kyle. He's never understood what his parents were thinking. I think I like unique spellings. It changes things up a bit, especially with the really common names.
I had a friend who went by the name Eighmi online. I always thought that'd be a fun name to torture my kid with.
