We are instructed by DC Comics to answer all questions that we don't give a shit about with a "maybe".

So, maybe. :)

Dear Ethan,

Have you ever used any form of Social Assitence?

Me personally? No. My family did when I was growing up, impoverished little subversive radicals that we were. But even then, guess where the welfare came from?

The Mormon Church.

I read some more of those Impulse issues you drew over the holidays, and had a question about the style you used for the book. It's obviously extremely different from the style you use now, and much more like Humberto Ramos' art on the book, which brings me to my question:

Was the style you drew the book in a personal choice by you to keep the previous flow of the book, or did editorial have a say in that?

IMPULSE was my first job at DC, and I learned to draw that way in order to keep the job. Obviously, the way I draw ordinarily wouldn't have been met with much enthusiasm by the fans of that book. It was a lot of fun, though. I miss drawing in that style.

I think the chances are pretty good that some kind of Absolute Green Lantern book will happen. Whether its Rebirth, Sinestro or Blackest Night, or a combination of all of them...who knows? I think their chosen on a sort of consensus of what is felt is a "classic" or important story, and whether or not DC feels like they can sell yet another reprint of it.

I'd love to see it, personally. Write to DC!

I don't know. There's a story that I did with Dezago called MERCURY FALLING that wasn't bad. I think it was 6 issues long, and could make a fun trade paperback, but the IMPULSE "brand" doesn't exist anymore, and I'm not sure how DC could market it. Maybe just call it "Mercury Falling" and not Impulse. I've thought about it once or twice, and I'll mention it to Bob Wayne when I see him next.

Thanks!

I'm not sure it'd be possible to document all of the hidden words and images I've placed in my art over the years. Many are secret, only I know about them. But I've seen a website about NEW X-MEN #118, and also a YouTube video about it. Both are pretty good at locating the majority of the hidden words in that issue. They shouldn't be difficult to look up on the net!

Hi Ethan; I understand you have been accepting some commission; are you still taking requests and how long does it typically take to get to each commission?

Nope, not taking commissions now.

There are two kinds of commissions: The kind I do at conventions, and the kind I do at home. The kind I do at home are more expensive, and take more time. You can wait up to a year, depending on what the project is, but the end result is a cover quality piece. The detail and the finished quality that I'm known for in my regular work is all there.

The other kind are the convention drawings, and they are less expensive, but you've got to meet me at a show, or be able to pick it up. They are faster, looser, and fun, but they are sketches. Now and then, I'll do an advance list for a convention, and start two days early. But not very often. Thanks!

Ethan would you consider Hal Jordan the comic book version of Indiana Jones? Now I know that he's based on pulp fiction serials heroes and I guess by extension comic book characters but isn't Hal Jordan kind of reminiscent of that?

Like Indy he gets himself into weird shit and trouble due to his choice of profession, he's always brave to the very end and is a badass odds against him or not. Plus he also was a commie smasher in Superman Red Son so the rest writes itself.
