From Top Shelf's blog:

SPACENIGHT - ROM TRIBUTE SHOW
A Collection Of Digital Prints & Original Art To Benefit Bill Mantlo

Floating World proprietor Jason Leivian writes:
"The first comic I ever read was ROM Spaceknight, a silver cyborg fighting evil monsters throughout the universe. I collected every issue until the series was cancelled at #75 (when I asked the comic clerk why it was cancelled he kindly replied, 'Well, they just ran out of stories to tell.'). I didnít know it at the time, but the artist of that first issue was Steve Ditko, who would later become one of my all time favorites.

"Years later I learned that all of these incredible stories were written by one man, Bill Mantlo. At the same time I learned that he had been injured in a terrible hit and run accident in 1992. Due to the severe injuries, Bill currently resides in a Brain Injury Rehabilitation Nursing Home, and will probably do so for the rest of his life.

"This show will serve as a fundraiser and celebration of the stories Bill has given us. All of the artwork and more will be compiled in a tribute comic next year that will be sold as a non-profitbenefit book for Billís brother/caregiver, Mike Mantlo, to provide funding to enable Bill to enjoy somewhat of a quality of life."

I think its great that they're helping Mantlo, but Rom and Jeffrey Brown baffle and confuse me.

My favorite is this one by Renee French, TIP Pm'd me a link to it a few weeks ago. I love it!

I need to get a scanner someday, I've got a bunch of ROM sketches from Cons over the last few years. Hopefully I'll get a few more at WWT this weekend :)

I was going through the 3/$1 bin today and saw like 15 Rom issues. I almost got them, but none of them were consecutive and I hate that.

If you ever see the issues where he becomes a herald for Galactus those are my favorites:

Is there an essential ROM planned? I'd buy two copies.

and an essential Howard the Duck vol 2!!!!Mantlo wrote most of the post-gerber didn't he?

No Essential ROM planned because of copyright issues. :( ROM (only the ROM character, nothing else related to the series) is owned by a toy company. They only ever made that one toy decades ago but for whatever reason someone's clinging onto the character rights.

Yep, he did the latter Howard the Duck. He pretty much did every comic I loved as a kid. He had runs on every major Marvel title but he did alot of stuff like Sectaurs, Rocket Racoon, and Micronauts too. The man is a legend, it's tragic he gets so little credit nowadays.

It would be nice. But Rom is owned by Parker Brothers or is it Hasbro? So no such luck. Would be nice if Marvel just brought the rights. Hasbro is doing shit with Rom.

Micronauts is owned by someone else. But only Marvel created characters can show up. Of the characters that can show up is Acturus Rann? Princess Mari, Bug, and that is it. Acroyear, (though they could create a stand in and call him Spartax like in Earth X) and I forget the giant robot and little robot's name are owned by the charcter. There was a Force Commander and he was Mari's brother though they can just ressurect Mari's brother and not bother with the Force Commander name.

Actually... I seem to remember Micronauts showing up in the Warlock mini in the late 90's. I should draw ROM myself. I thought he was neat.

But it was only Rann, Mari, and Bug, plus some weird ass cyborg looking dude. I think they called themselves the Microns at that point.

As I understand it, the amount of money Marvel Inc. would potentially have to shell out to purchase the rights to ROM: Space Knight from Parker Brothers is too much to justify the amount they would potentially make from the reprinting of those old ROM Comics.

I happen to disagree. Everyone I know and thier mother absolutely loves ROM and most everyone I ever talk to about the character always instantly ask whether or not they can purchase reprints of ROM comics.

I agree that it's tragic he gets so little notice these days. Like many others, I kind of grew up on his work. Micronauts was the first comic I actively collected. Had to have every issue.... absolutely loved the worlds he built!

Also... huge Rom fan here!

Me too... although I have to admit... Shogun Warriors completed the holy trinity for me at that young age. Don't ask me why... I just loved it.....

Wan't there something in Lying in the Gutters a few weeks ago about some kind of possibility that Marvel may have a stronger stake in Rom than Hasbro? I think it was due to the fact that Marvel created more of Rom than Hasbro did. Y'know... his backstory, friends and ongoing tale.

Marvel created everything except the likeness of ROM himself and the name ROM. There was no toyline, Hasbro only ever made the one toy. Everything else about ROm was created by Marvel in the comics.

I think that Marvel might have a case for this, actually.

Hasbro and Marvel have the Legends action figure deal right now. It would be kind of dickish of Marvel to get into legal maneuvering with someone they have a partnership with right now.

I agree it's a major difference in appearance but I don't know if that matters. Most of the Transformers look nothing like thier toys in the old Marvel comics but Marvel doesn't own those likenesses of them either.

They could very easily do a new ROM series if they just changed his name ("The Spaceknight?") and appearance. But that won't get us any Essential volumes. :(

So anyway, I heard they managed to creep ROM into one of the Essential Handbooks of the Marvel Universe, is that true?

Not just appearance, but tone.
