Okay...question. I've read a few things here about the animosity between Marvel & DC, and how writers don't go over to the 'dark side' unless they're cut loose from the 'light side' first...and so on. I really don't understand what the conflict is between the two companies, nor do I wish to...unless, of course, it's full of juicy gossip and stuff. But I digress....
So...Frank Tieri's doing Gotham Underground...does this mean he no longer does work for Marvel??
Just wonderin'....

Talent moves freely between the two, especially freelancers. Others seem to bounce back and forth between exclusive deals. There's no animosity about it.

He's definetely not a DC exclusive. If he's Marvel exclusive, he wrote the DC projects before he signed the contract. I think he's a freelancer right now, meaning he'll likely write for both companies, like he's currently doing.

I like his stuff...not just the Wolverine stuff, but I'm reading Gamma Corps, too...and it's pretty decent. The ONLY problem I have with his stuff is his overuse of the word 'mook'... :p other than that, I find his writing rather entertaining...in a good comic book way.

I read his Weapon X arc with Wolverine...I think it was called...ugh...I forgot. It's the one where Wolverine is wanted for murder at the beginning...and then ends up with the Deadpool Weapon X tie-in. Also read the other one...Days of Future Now. And, of course, read his Wolverine stuff, including Annuals.
One of my favorites was the Wolverine/Darkness issue...just loved that one...loved the ending, where Wolverine's talking about how fast parts of him heal...that made the whole book for me...

You know, I don't know where this notion came from, but this is not the first time I've seen this so I might as well clear it up now-- I'm not exclusive with anybody. I think this all got started when it was first announced that I'd be working with DC, which started some people thinking that meant I wasn't working with Marvel anymore. Not so-- I have Marvel projects in the works, DC projects in the works, and I'm even about to dip my big ugly toe in some creator owned stuff.
So relax, everybody. If you're a fan of the Big Two and my work, there'll be plenty of FT goodness to go around.
And if you're not a fan? Too fucking bad.

I have the Weapon X TPB, which includes Wolverine #162-166, and Deadpool #57-60. Good stuff.
But this going back and finding stuff...ugh. Some I find in TPB, some in individual issues...it's a whole separate job just to track down all the stories. Eventually I'll get to them all...unless, of course, I continue to be sidetracked by the Wraith...

Ah, I told you the Philly thing was no big deal. Besides, you even went out and bought Wolvie/ Darkness on the spot when you found out who I was, so no complaints on this end
As for me doing work for both DC and marvel, there's no conflict at all. I get along with folks at both companies and they more than understand working both sides of the fence is part of the game now.
But what do you mean, do don't read DC? I think you in particular would like my DC stuff-- the Wildcat arc I did for JSA Classified, Gotham Underground and especially Lord Havok and the Extremists (I'll let you in on a secret that's not so much a secret-- those characters are sort of loosely based on Marvel characters. If you're thinking DC's version of Squadron Supreme, you're not too far off)

Nice to know. I'm still new to all of this stuff, so it's nice to have clarification from people who REALLY know, instead of just listening to the bullshit in the comic shop.
But what do you mean, do don't read DC?
Yeah, it has to do with my 1. Wolverine obsession...that's still alive and well, partially thanks to you...
2. Only been reading comics for about a year and a half - mostly a ton of back issues - so hard to keep up with one company's product, let alone two.
3. I. hate. Superman. With a passion. Silly thing, I know...but I have always just wanted to smack that guy upside the head. HARD. Actually - I'm waiting for the DC/Marvel crossover where Wolverine impales the man of steel on his adamantium claws, and kills him dead. THAT would be sweetness itself to me. :D
I think you in particular would like my DC stuff-- the Wildcat arc I did for JSA Classified, Gotham Underground and especially Lord Havok and the Extremists (I'll let you in on a secret that's not so much a secret-- those characters are sort of loosely based on Marvel characters. Well...I do like Batman. Never read a Batman comic in my life - hubby has - but I've always been partial to the character. What was the amalgam of Batman and Wolverine? Darkclaw? You resurrect that guy, and I'll be devoted to you for life!
I'll see what my lcs has in stock. I've heard good things about Gotham Underground...so maybe I'll check it out. Hey, I read Gamma Corps on your recommendation...and ended up really enjoying it. Main reason was that you have a good way of making the characters personable...even when I don't know who the hell they are! I understood the characters immediately - they each stood out as individuals - and so that made me want to read the rest of the arc. Some writers confuse the hell out of me when it comes to the characters - lumping them all together and foregoing character development in favor of action, or even plot. But you made each of those GC characters distinct, interesting and - like I said - personable. So...maybe I COULD pick up something DCish...though I'm afraid my fingers will shrivel up and fall off the second I touch one of their books... ;-)
So - on a similar subject - what upcoming Marvel projects do you have in the works (if you are able to share), and - MORE IMPORTANTLY - what creator-owned projects are you working on (if you can't give details, just a hint or two would be fine) - and about when can we expect to see them (the original stuff) released?
Stargate Atlantis?! Fuck no. I already watch Lost, Heroes and Battlestar Gallactica-- I have to draw the line somewhere.
:nonono2:
I TRIED BSG, but it's SO godawful depressing I had to stop. Heroes - never got into it. Lost - again, never got into it - and now only watch the Desmond parts over hubby's shoulder. Des...yeah - he's good. :heybaby: Thing I like about Atlantis is that there's a good amount of humor in it...which makes it a bit lighter, and far more entertaining (to me) than the depressing fare tv is offering up of late. And then...and then there's the Wraith...
Yeah, I only watch tv - and read comics - for the hot guys. Problem is - my idea of hot seems to range from a short, hairy guy with claws and doggy breath, to tall, praying mantis-like soul-sucking bugmen...
go figger.

I'll look into it tomorrow when I go comic shopping. At this point, however...I might have to wait for trade 'cause not sure my lcs will have any issues left. Either that, or get it on-line. You would recommend Lord Havok over Gotham Underground?
Speaking of Sabretooth, any thoughts about Marvel killing him off (for now)? I actually liked it...but I know a lot of fans are pissed, especially with the way he went down. You wrote a pretty twisted Sabretooth in that Wolverine Weapon X arc...where he had the little girl in the closet...THAT really disturbed me. Very effective. Sometimes I like the darker stuff - always wanted to see a Wolverine MAX title, just so writers could go a little deeper into his darker side.

I've got your back on this. The Black Knight is probably one of my top 3 favorite characters and I felt he was such a great fir into that Excalibur team. Frank, you and I chatted breifly about that in Feb. at the NY ComicCon. That was when Marvel announced Mystic Arcanna which featured the modern B K on the cover but the story was on the original B K. The problem is, when Mike left to go to DC, the project sort of fell apart without him. I've tried to revive it a number of times with a few different editors since then, but so far no luck
FT
I certainly didn't know that. But you are still trying make that project happen, right?

Let me know if there is anything that can be done to help you get the project going. In the meantime, I am waiting on Lords of Avalon and I am reading The Sword by the Luna brothers (good stuff, but not as good as Dane Whitman, the Ebony Blade wielding Black Knight)!

:blurp:
I'll look into it tomorrow when I go comic shopping. At this point, however...I might have to wait for trade 'cause not sure my lcs will have any issues left. Either that, or get it on-line. You would recommend Lord Havok over Gotham Underground?
I would recommend both. Because I wrote 'em, of course. ;)
Here's what I think about Sabretooth: it's comics and you know it's only a matter of time before they bring him back. (they brought back Bucky, for fuck's sake, and that was always the cardinal rule: anybody can come back except Uncle Ben and Bucky-- so really, absolutely anybody can fucking come back now) And when they do bring him back-- and again, I'm saying when not if (and no, I have no inside info or anything-- I just know it's inevitable)-- I have a real cool way to do it. If they let me write it of course...
Nah, yer a mook. ;-)
Really Frank, you're one of the best creators I've interacted with on-line. David Mack has been really nice as well - lots of folks here are, really, and Patrick Zircher was pretty cool over at Marvel - funny, like you.
I know. I'm awesome. ;-)
Anyway...
I realize you guys are busy doing whatever it is that you do to get a book out on time, so I don't expect you to waste it on the likes of me. So I always appreciate your replies, those here - and elsewhere. It's very interesting to hear what you have to say - about your work, and whatever else you care to share...EVEN the nonsense. :D As always, thanks for your time.

then I release the hounds. (and by hounds I meant, ya know... you guys. And whatever legions of BK fans you can muster, damnit)

I always did like your Wolverine... :scared: ...so I'm sure your Sabretooth would be just as good.
Ya, know - though...I'd actually rather see Sabretooth dead and gone, and the Son of Sabretooth (whoever that could be) rise up in his stead, to avenge his father, and all that. Just because I really came to hate Sabretooth with a passion....and THAT was mostly YOUR fault in that Weapon X arc...that little girl in the closet...just such a sicko.

I'd love to see a Black Knight / Black Panther mini revolving around the Ebony Blade. I must say, that "it's a fake Ebony Blade" didn't really sit right with me. To think that Dane wouldn't be able to tell the very second he touched the sword just seems wrong. Especially when there is a perfectly legit reason for their being two Ebony Blades. Proctor's version having been stored in Avengers Mansion, which was later blown up during Disassembled. That one could've easily made its way to Black Panther, while Dane was getting his back from Bloodwraith.
Yes, I'm a Dane Whitman geek who has read just about every appearance of his.

Me too. There's allot of questions to answer like who was the Vatican Black Knight?. What happened to the 'Heroes for Hire Dane' who used to shout Avalon (or something like that) to get his shield, sword and flying horse? What was Merlin doing when Dane walked in on him in New Excalibur? I hope FT gets the okay for his project!

Just got the issue in question. I checked around and apparently this was sort of in response to how Logan was portrayed (very 2-dimensionally* etc.) over in Punisher...

* er, and I don't mean the scene involving Frank running over Logan with a steamroller, which I have not seen but read about... sounds rather Bugs-Bunny-ish somehow...

I think I missed those Punisher issues.
They were apparently #15-17 -- I haven't really read Garth Ennis much (waits for everyone to catch their breath) but apparently the arc existed to mock Wolverine (http://www.thefourthrail.com/reviews/critiques/102802/punisher17.shtml). Oh, and there are midget Mafia mobsters, too.
Having not read Ennis (my partner likes Preacher; I glanced at an issue or two and was icked out), I don't think it would be fair of me to poke around for other people's reviews of him to assess him by, but my impression is he doesn't care for super-heroes much.
I still don't think we (um, yes, if it wasn't painfully obvious to even the most casual of observers, I'm gay) quite want to claim Frank Castle as one of our own, though. (Interestingly, while I wasn't a huge fan of the "Five Years Later" Legion, one story suggested that after Mekt Ranzz -- Lightning Lord of the Legion of Super-Villains -- reformed, he had a boyfriend, and I could see that making sense on all sorts of levels with what had already been set up, though nothing made it a compulsory conclusion; and while I was one of the people who at first thought the Vi/Ayla pairing was forced, upon later re-reading of the years before it I could see it progressing logically given the characters' histories after all. The Shvaughn/Sean Erin matter, though, still makes no sense to me this day and seems the worst kind of canonized fan-fiction...)

I had no idea you were gay.
I hate myself for not being around during the FYL Legion era. Seems like there were a lot of interesting stories. So, the Lightning Lord was gay in this Legion version? That ceratinly is intriguing. I wonder if he was involved with somone from his own planet, or if he was just tired of the whole twins thing. Looks like you are a Legion expert.

Wow, and here I thought I was obvious. LOL! Oh well! :) Mekt appeared hardly at all during this period -- it was mainly in one annual, if I recall correctly. Yes, I think they more or less attributed some of Mekt's social dysfunctionality to his being without a twin. I'm tempted to say "Oh, I'm no Legion expert" but then I find myself thinking things like "In the Amalgam Universe, are Yera and Lyja merged into one being, and is she married to Colossal Torch?" and things like that. So, um, maybe. Really I'm just a colossal geek. When my partner tests his diabetic blood sugar I'll ask the number and nine times out of ten I can spew, from memory, what that issue of X-Men was about, what the cover looked like, etc.

Oh, and of course, you know you can get them all as back issues, right? When I find a period of writing I like I go and accumulate all of them. Indeed, getting back to Frank (hi, Frank!) and his run on Wolverine, that's precisely what I've been doing with back issues of Wolverine. I'm saving them all up to read in their entirety. (And let me tell you, Wolverine 102.5 is almost impossible to find affordably...) Sometimes issues are more expensive but sometimes you can luck out, or find an affordable eBay lot. I've almost got my Wolverine collection complete, too, both this series and Marvel Comics Presents (man, were there some great stories in there, too). :D Hopefully, Logan-sama would be proud... ;-)
