Do you have them where you work?

And if so, do you participate? How do you feel when you take part and then see someone eating food when you know they didn't bring anything in themself?

And should the person who only brings in/buys "plastic forks" or a 2-liter bottle of soda really get to take part or is that bullshit?

I think it's sometimes a lot to ask that everyone buy or make something for a whole office full of people. Those who don't are always looked down upon for not doing it, and then all some people might be able to afford is to bring in a bottle of soda or leftover plasticware they had lying around the house. Those people usually know that what they brought in doesn't mean they can load up 3 plates with food. Although always at the end of it there are tons of leftovers.

If there aren't any set rules, then everyone should be able to eat. What we usually do is have everyone pitch in a few bucks to buy the forks, napkins, plates, drinks. Sometimes we even do that for desserts. Then, everyone is expected to bring in some kind of dish. This way, everyone is bringing something to the table, and no one cheaps out with just bringing drinks and chips. If someone "forgets" to bring a dish, they still eat. I work in a small enough group that eventually that person contributes in some way later on.

It's happened less since we fired the bored, caffeinated housewife. I wouldn't mind having them here now that she's gone. The conversations won't revolve around her divorce and dating scene.

I hate food days. It always smells like a crazed baboon shit factory sitting on top of a 300 foot hill of dead hippies clutching road kill in their collective asses.

In my old dept we had a pot luck breakfast every friday, but the schedule was rotated, so that each week a different group of 4-5 people provided the food. That worked out pretty well.

i usually don't participate.

HOWEVER, i also don't eat the food. i think that's tacky.

on the other hand...most of the time there are plenty of leftovers and co-workers BEG me to eat something. so i get the best of all worlds.

We don't have potluck days, but for our dept meetings every month a different person organizes and supplies food.

This makes for wildly sporadic offerings. We've gone from pizza to thai food to one guy who just brought pie...

And I'm not saying that pie is bad... But I was counting on the meeting to supply my lunch.

I'm the same, they are downright disgusting around here. They were giving away left over taco meat here a few weeks ago that had sit out from lunch till almost 5PM.....yeah please, can I have some?

The people that get me are the ones that actually steal the food to take home with them for their kids or for their own fat selves. What a nightmare.

Where I used to work, we 'caught' a girl doing that. She came walking out of the lunchroom with three plates. Once for her and two for her kids for when she got home. And I think she brought in....um....lemme think....

NOTHING!

I also want to add that culture plays a big role in these things too. I'm asian (filipino) and in the offices I worked in before (majority asian), we always let people take the leftovers home if they want it. The same goes for parties and stuff.

Personally, I don't mind if someone takes the leftover food home, since I don't like to see food wasted.

The reason I brought this up: Yesterday my wife made a lasagna to bring into work today. Her company (a construction firm), leases out some of their office space to a religious group. Every event they have, pretty much every single person from the religious group never "participates" or brings anything in. But they're always the first greedy 'bastards' to go and chow down. One of the guys was in the room getting seconds and my wife asked him if he enjoyed the food. He said 'Yes!" My wife asked him, "What did you bring in?" He said "Soup." She looked around and saw no soup then asked, "Oh? Where is it?" He said...

"Oh, I ate it already..."

This wasn't her taking leftovers. This was her taking three plates before some people who brought stuff in even got a chance to take their first plate. And that's what got people riled up.

In her defense, she was young (maybe too young to know better) and new at the office. Also, she was a generally sweet girl who had some problems at home and was a single mom. Once people got over their general distaste for what happened I think for the most part no one really cared all that much.

I don't know if it was a cultural thing or what, but there were a handful of Filipino ladies at my girlfriend's office who would feed her constantly...

Yeah, if it's at the point where you know that not everyone is participating fairly, then you might as well not do it. I've personally never had that problem, because I've always worked with very respectful, generous people.

Can your wife make it a closed doors thing, where only people who bring food can participate? It's really shitty if all you're ever doing is feeding other people who can easily feed themselves.

She's put stuff in the email asking that if you wish to participate to please bring something in for everyone to share. These are clearly people who CAN afford to bring something and they just don't.

The BEST part? One girl responded to the email a few weeks ago saying that she can't participate because it's in regards to Halloween and her religion won't allow her to take part.

Guess what? Guess who was stuffing her face with food today?

Hahaha, yeah, I can see that happening. Filipinos, especially those raised in the filipino culture, are notorious for being extremely generous with regards to food. When they host 'filipino' parties, they always cook excess food for the sole purpose of having leftovers to give away. Christmas and New Year's are like the big days in the year for me. I always go home with crab legs and lobster and some good filipino dishes.

yes we have them. no i do not participate. why do I want to subject myself to the dregs of someone's kitchen pantry that has bubbled itself into a gastric nightmare all morning in a stupid fucking crockpot.

And the reward for surviving all that? Basking in my co-workers gas all afternoon long...

god, I fucking hate these things.

We do this around Christmas.

Everybody makes or brings in something and the office buys trays of food too.

Since the office provides so much food, it doesnt really matter if everyone cooks

Yeah, but even if you DON'T participate you still get to sit in the midst of the meltdown at Three Mile Island.

So today we had these left over cookies from a training I didnt go to. Anyway an email was sent out that we could have ONE since there werent that many. I get up to check them out and noticed our resident fatty mcfat-fat had 3 of them. I got up there and managed to get one of the only 2 sugar cookies they had left. Somtimes I just want to fish-hook this person's mouth and beat them senseless.

Right this very instant I can hear crunching of chips and crinkling of a chip bag radiating from this person's cube.

You want my opinion of potluck lunches at work? I hate them. The food is always fucking disgusting. Seems like every other person just makes some super-oily pasta salad and the rest make gross salad or casserole. Ugh. I was so disgusted after an office potluck once that I went and made this:

We had them at my old FT job in Jersey for special occasions/holidays: Thanksgiving, people that stayed around for Christmas, Fourth of July...

Since it was a pretty big company and the HR manager was a cool, gung-ho kinda guy (who ordered those big-azz corporate function subs from Quiznos), a lot of people participated, myself included. And it was a very diverse company, so there were lots of different types and amounts of dishes, sides, desserts, and drinks.

It was the last time I ever had the greatness that is roti.
