I am an old friend of Greg Horn's, and we were talking and he was saying how people were asking to see the GI Joe stuff. I will be posting the image soon, as soon as I figure out how to host my image. Anyway, when you see it, my son and I are the ones looking freaked out in the plane. I am also the Navy Seal on the December 2004 cover of XBOX magazine.
Greg is the best!! Not just artist--which he is the best artist-- but the best person too. We've been friends since the fifth grade, so I would know.
But a recent example is that I am a mentor for a 14-year old, and he loves Greg's art, and I had taken him to Greg's house to visit. We even went to the Big ol'water park--Greg too(and thats another story for another thread in the future).
Well, when the kid's appendix burst, and he was stuck in the hospital, guess who was there with a great spidey drawing(the kids favorite, as his mom aint too cool w/ Greg's Emma just yet), AND some really stake joke? Greg and his wife Betsy too, THAT'S WHO. They are the best. More Greg stories to come--like the time Greg tried to rob Wendy's, I had uhhh, nothing to with it.
Enjoy the GI JOE pic!
Ross, you're too kind...I REALLY AM a freakin' sweetheart ain't I? I'm glad you were able to come on here and post.
Ross is my old buddy from school who I lost touch with for about 15 years--then 2 years ago he saw my name on a message board somewhere and decided to "find" me again. Anyway, he has season tickets to the Miami Heat and convinced me to go pester LeBron James to sign my Olympics poster. It was pretty funny because Ross was yelling at him during the warm-up and he was doing his best not to pay any attention to us (I think he missed every shot though!)
Anyway, you can't post your GI JOE image Ross--I'm waiting for the green light from Hasbro and they are very tight about this stuff. Sorry Dude. In the meantime, here is the XBOX magazine cover with Ross playing a Navy SEAL from Rainbow Six...

Thanks for posting the XBOX pic. Greg had to shrink my arms because the "guns" are much bigger than that.
Greg, should we rellease the Wendy's story to the world??

Is this that time where Greg wanted money for coke and the manager at Wendy's wouldn't give it to him, so he pushed the managers head into the fry vat and held it there? You should probably keep that one to yourself.
Cool! Thanks for sending that in Jeff! That is only one of the images I did though. I'll try to get in contact with them this week and see if we can post the rest.
Those new GI Joe figures look pretty cool--I'm going to get them all (and I won't shoot them this time). Did you see Stalker in there anywhere?--I couldn't find him on the Toy news site....

Stalker is in the 3rd wave of figures (Waves 1 and 2 in stores now), probably in a couple months.

From Toynewsi, notes about a running change...
"For Stalker fans, there is good news. The light-green color camo figure which had previously been shown for the wave 3 Stalker figure will be fixed. The factory had made an error on the paint for the figure. Hasbro sent it back to be corrected, but to get the figure out in time the initial figures released will be the light color with a running change coming shortly afterwards."

Robot Chicken is awesome. I remember an episode where Hitler is making his speech to the masses, but he can't stop farting. Tom and Joy Snyder work for that show and they make most of those figures that look like real people. Go check out some of their stuff at
http://joyandtomstudios.com/
At conventions Tom is always carrying a box full of little heads. And I am always dying to see what's in that box! Last year it was Snoop Dogg and Vincent Price.

I put 2 and 2 together, they said you were doing the next wave and showed the Dreadnok cover at the convention, figured that the Destro one was yours too (and the art fit!)

Yay!

No, they hadn't mentioned or shown that one yet!
Alright, since these images are clearly being shown on the internet, it is finally safe to post them here. Of course #115 has not gone public yet, so we will still have to wait on that one...that is really going to make Ross sad since he plays a part on that cover (SORRY ROSS!!! try to be patient buddy).
Anyway, below is GI Joe #14 which will be included in the 25th year anniversary "2-packs" from Hasbro! ( I mean you get an actual comic book along with the action figures). When i was painting this cover, I had no idea that Breaker would be one of the included figures, so the fact that the guy in front of the transport looks like Breaker is pure coincidence! All he needs is a gum bubble and he'd be perfect.
Also, this cover is the first time i've ever used Poser! The illustration called for a horde of Cobra foot soldiers, so I sent quick drawings of all the poses to my buddy Bill Marimon. He rendered out all the basic figures-- at this point they were just generic guys in jeans and a shirt. So, then i got busy painting in the wrinkles of their clothing, and then their gear, vests, and helmets. It was a ton of work to get them to look right, but the poser figures definitely helped save time on the composition phase of the painting. This was a lot of fun because i haven't used any 3-D elements since Elektra #5 (way back in 2002).
This painting is a little different from the final printed artwork as the Rattlers are full size at the top of the art work. In the final printed version, you can see where we lowered the planes to accomodate the GI JOE logo. Luckily, i had left them on a layer so it was an easy fix.

Here's the Poser examples. For me, Poser renders don't work as a final product (as I ended up painting over most of the original output). But it's a great tool for composition when you need to do a lot of characters, and it really shines in the posing department...which i guess is why they call it "poser".
here is one of the cobra dudes....

Alrighty, here is Gi joe #30 with the Dreadnoks trashing the Joe's fighter jet--those assholes! Tom, Dick, and Harry (that's their real names) must be the baddest dudes in all of the GI Joe world because they don't even need guns. "What's that? ...you have a shoulder mounted rocket launcher? That's fine--I'll just use this staple gun from Home Depot--Stand and Deliver, Bitches!!!"

Looks like the third cover is going to be released in Wave 3 of the comic packs, and will probably contain Wild Weasel and Ace...
"This Wave 3 case includes 8 individually packaged 2-packs, each with a comic book: 2x Ace & Wild Weasel, 2x Tomax & Xamot, 2x Crimson Guard & Officer, and 2x Battle Damage Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow. (Subject to change.)"

Were you given a choice on what covers you got to draw for them or did they just assign covers to you? A bunch of us are trying to figure out why Ace and Wild Weasel got issue 115 instead of their more classic fight in issue 34.
I'd still like to see a Greg Horn version of issue 75 or 77, but they'd probably end up to sexy for Hasbro (Adam Hughes ran into that on a proposed Baroness cover!)
The covers were assigned by Hasbro, so I had no choice in the matter. But, on the chance they were planning to do more, i did inquire about Gi JOe #1, Snake eye--"Silent Interlude" cover, and the then there was the Michael Golden piece with Roadblock, Snake eyes, and Lady Jaye. I just can't remember what it was used for--Gi Joe yearbook? Or an annual maybe? Unfortunately, I was one of their later artist choices to supply covers, and all those covers were already spoken for.

Is the 115 cover out yet? Where is it posted? I can't say why they chose 115, but it is a great shot with the Rattler coming down on the Joe's fighter and then the fortress firing flak in the background. An extremely difficult composition!!
I just looked up the Baroness cover you were talking about--yeah it's a little provocative with her strecthed out on the hood n stuff. I like! Some companies are more sensitive to this kind of stuff than others. You have no idea what kind of heat they take behind the scenes. When i did the Serra Angel cover for Inquest Gamer #84 they told me they had a lot of mommies writing in to complain about my painting. I don't think it is really that bad at all... anyway, you'll notice I haven't done many covers for them since!

No, they haven't released the image for 115 yet, just the text description of what figures are coming.
Yeah, Ashley Wood got to do issues 1 and 21 (as well as issue 24).
Here's the Adam Hughes art that got shot down by Hasbro...

That Michael Golden piece was from the cover of Yearbook #2.
ah! I love Adam. That's a nice shot of Baroness--

Its a really nice piece IMO...
It baffles me that someone would complain about that Angel piece...

well, I guess after years of ogres, wizards, and hobGoblins, my angel was just too much of a shock! But I don't think the piece is really that bad either. It's sexy for sure... but pretty tame. I guess it depends on who happens to be looking at the cover at any given time. I've seen some guys draw muff right in your face and get a free pass. Of course, this all depends on what cover we're talking about...an over-the-top sexy Vampirella cover is not going to draw a lot of fire, but the cover of a mainstream video game magazine like OXM will. That's probably why we did'nt do a lot of girl covers on Xbox magazine...i think outta 18 covers we did Starcraft: Ghost and DOA Volleyball. and believe it or not, my DOA girl is pretty sedate compared to the actual video game!
Anyway, here's the Serra Angel pic we're talking about...

Alright! The cover for G.I. Joe #115 is officially "live", so here it is in original form with no logos or other obscurities. Hey Jeff--you only post on the GI JOE thread... Don't you give a flying crap about anything else besides GI JOE?!?! By the way, I think I may have been on your site once.. when i was researching a pilot for this cover. Or maybe your name came up on a forum... do you have a Joe site?

I don't know. Maybe because it looks so realistic? Maybe if it was more cartoony, they wouldn't have complained.

I do give a flying crap about other stuff too, but Joe is my main focus and usually the only thing I take time to post about. I did a lot of work for YoJoe.com previously (I ran it for a few years), but it was never MY site, you probably ran across my name there.
What do you think about the new Joe figures? The level of detail is pretty awesome-- you can holster most of their sidearms. Gung Ho's grenade launcher actually hinges to reveal the breach and it even has the collapsable sight on the front of the barrel! Sculpting wise, it looks like Hasbro has taken a dramatic turn towards realism--just take a look at Flint-- I think the 25th anniversary figures kill the Valor vs Venom era stuff. Now if only they would make some vehicles...and maybe a nice HQ for cobra!
