Damned if I can't get enough of the Pogues sometimes. Makes me sad and happy at the same time.
Summer in Siam and a Pair of Brown Eyes and Waltzing Matilda especially.

Am I wrong? Maybe I'm just getting ready for my Ireland trip spiritually. :)

You are known for loving rum, sodomy and the lash. And also that album by The Pogues.

Ireland is the best, enjoy.

Rum? Not so much. I'm a whiskey, vokda and beer guy. Oh and I love the wine. I know wine isn't very Irish but I'm white trash Euro, a little of everything. :)

Sodomy and the lash? Are you coming on to me?

Do you want me to be? I'll have to clear it with the wife.

If you haven't seen Shane in concert, I highly recommend it. It's a unique experience.

Indeed. I've told this story before, but a couple years ago I saw Shane and he came out on crutches and inadvertantly knocked the mic stand over with his crutches, didn't seem to notice as he stayed exactly where he was and kept singing. After about 7 verses or so, a roadie picks up the mic and sets it back up on the stand in front of Shane who just keeps singing completely unaware of what just transpired. It was fantastic.

Last St. Paddys I saw the Pogues at Roseland and Shane came out in a wheelchair after falling off the stage in Boston the night before.

F yez all!

You're not wrong.

They are indeed one of the best bands in the world.

If I should Fall from the Grace of God is in my top 10 favourite albums of all time.

Listening to the Pogues kind of helped me get my job.

And I owe me even picking up the Pogues to listen to to Garth Ennis mentioning the hell out of them in his Hellblazer run and some nice people on the Straight to Hell Hellblazer Forum.

They make me wish I'd been born in Ireland.

Shane McGowan is the most hideously beautiful man who ever lived.

Those teeth are perplexing, and clearly the key to his genius.

Wild Cats of Kilkenny is epic.

I was so bummed I missed the recent reunion tour when it came by my city. Seeing Shane and the rest of the gang live would be a blast.

It is all about Thousands are Sailing and Dirty old town for me.

And if you likes the Pogues, it is always wise to give the Dubliners a shot.

Dunno man, but it definitely wasn't me. I don't mind The Pogues, but there's no way they'd spring to mind if I was recommending music to anyone. Maybe Glenn?

She needs to watch what she says... spreading vicious lies about people...

Cool to know.

Fairytale's a great song. My favourites are If I should fall from the grace of God, Transmetropolitan, the Battle March Medley, Lullaby of London, thousands are sailing, Waxies Dargle, Nancy Whiskey and of course Rake at The Gates of Hell plus many more I can't recall off the top of my head.

If I ever do get to meet Garth I need to buy him at least two drinks. One for introducing me to the Pogues and the other for introducing me to Bill Hicks.

I dunno if anyone has heard of them but a while back I came across a band called The Irish Descendants. They play traditional Irish songs, sea shanty's and ballads. People who like the Pogues will probably like them though a word of caution from what I've heard of their music they seem very traditionalist so if you're not into that kind of sound then you may not like them.

Don't wait! Get Rant in E-Minor now! Bill Hicks actually changed a lot of my perception of the world and as I type this it seems very cult-ish but it is what it is.

When I bought The Lord of the Rings to read a few years ago I remember seeing a quote on the back cover which said "The world is divide into two groups of people. Those who've read the Lord of the Rings; and the ones that are yet to read it." I feel the same came be said about Bill Hicks. I can actually divide my life and my perception of life into two phases. My life before I heard Bill Hicks and my life after.

Oy. I sound like a weird cult leader trying to convince a neophyte. Sorry for that. The album is very good though and I can guarantee you that it will make you think differently about some things.

The one with the documentary and then the video of a show he did in England?

The one where they keep repeating "It's just a ride"?

Fuck... I can't remember the name of that dvd either right now...

Totally Bill Hicks (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0149281/)

That's not the one...
Here it is via amazon:
"Bill Hicks Live - Satirist, Social Critic, Stand-Up Comedian
Bill Hicks Live is the first official DVD release from the legendary and beloved comedian.

Since Bill died in 1993, his work has reached a new audience and he has become a powerful cult figure. For these fans who never had the opportunity to see Bill in person, this DVD will be a revelation. The DVD captures Bill at his very best, with three of his legendary filmed performances:
"One Night Stand" from the Old Vic Theatre in Chicago (approx 30 minutes)
"Revelations" from the Dominion Theatre in London (approx 65 minutes)
"Relentless", Bill’s breakout performance at the Montreal Comedy Festival (approx 70 minutes)
The DVD focuses on his incredible live act, with Hicks hilariously assaulting the stage and the audience with a non-stop cornucopia of insights into our twisted world; the government, the military, the police, religion, smoking, pornography, drugs and of course, for those of you who are getting antsy, a couple of dick jokes.
As a bonus, the documentary "Just A Ride" surveys Bill’s remarkable career with insights from his peers; including Brett Butler, Eddie Izzard, Richard Jeni, Jay Leno, David Letterman and Thea Vidale. (approx 45 minutes) "

It is so good. Flying Saucer Tour is a great cd as well, if only to hear a comedian totally unleash on an audiance.

they don't write 'em like that no more.

Ah well my mistake on the dvd. Totally Bill Hicks only the "Just a Ride" documentary and the Revelations performance in London.

There's a bootleg video on the net somewhere of the Bill Hicks set where he encounters the douchebag who keeps yelling out Freebird as Bill tries to perform to this crowd who clearly don't know who he is and expected something different and don't really care enough to listen to what he's saying. That guy and this woman who keeps yelling out "You suck!" annoy him to such a degree that he totally loses it and lets go on the audience screaming "HITLER HAD THE RIGHT IDEA!! HE WAS JUST AN UNDERCHEIVER!! KILL 'EM ALL!!" Well... seems horrifying but in context it made sense and people laughed at him breaking down.

Have you guys seen Straight To Hell? It's a weird movie and sometimes doesn't make much sense but it's a huge thrill to see Joe Strummer walking around shooting a gun and seeing Cait O'Riordan smack around Elvis Costello, Jim Jarmusch shows up and Dennis Hopper and Grace Jones' roles in the movie have to be seen to be believed. It's totally over the top and crazy and while I didn't think it had anything remotely resembling a plot as such it still kicked ass to see Joe Strummer kill Shane MacGowan and the rest of the Pogues!
