The Secret Handshake -- One Full Year

I can't believe he does this all by himself. Fun piano/electronic power pop.

http://www.myspace.com/thesecrethandshake

The Bled -- Silent Treatment

Back to their '03 album with unoriginal but extremely well done metalcore.

http://www.myspace.com/thebled

Treaty of Paris -- Sweet Dreams, Sucker

Inspired and somewhat experimental pop punk that blows generic bands like All Time Low out of the water (also released a new album, but I wouldn't recommend it).

Matt Pond PA -- Last Light

Wonderfully instrospective indie pop ala' Death Cab for Cutie...but better (IMO). Haven't had a chance to listen to this one yet, but I caught the demos a few months back, and if it's any indication, this will be a fantastic album.

Foo Fighters disappointed me, only ended up getting 3 tracks off of it, maybe will get one more.
Weakerthans was also a bit of a disappointment.
Forgot about Matt Pond PA, will have to go check that back out. I saw him and his band play like 3-4 years ago.

I feel like a freak because I consistently try to enjoy him and I appreciate his talent, but I just can't. That's a commentary on my tastes, not Sam Beam, who I know is rather wonderful. Same with The Arcade Fire and Alkaline Trio. I suck.

Christ, they're still around? They were huge when I was in middle school and that Where The Party At? song was everywhere. Damn '01.

Forgot the Foo Fighters. Not a fan, but I know they're a pretty huge rock band and many will be looking for it.

Matt Pond PA is one of the best indie acts out there, yet they're consistently overlooked in favor of The Decemberists, Death Cab, The Shins, Rilo Kiley and other similar bands. I don't get it. They're as good if not better.

Feel free not to like Alkaline Trio in my book. They're pretty horrible.

However, the other two...for shame.

The reviews of the new FF album has been weird, some are calling it an instant classic and some say it's so-so. Really across the board.

there is more diversity of styles on the album.
more piano than i've ever heard from the Foo Fighters.
the tracks I did get are solid, but I dunno, it seems like they're trying to cover their bases more than making a solid album.
but that's my opinion from listening to stuff at 1 am. I could go back and feel differently now that I'm wide awake.

Apparently 9-11-07 was a good day for metal:

The first of a 2 album release from these guys. Ripper Owens sounds wonderful--the vocals are actually written for him on this album. I can't believe I didn't pick this up sooner.

In a sea of 18 year old freshmen, the Bendis Board still reminds me that being 20 isn't only not old, but quite young. Thank you, good sir. God, I really want to like Iron and Wine.

Don't feel obligated to like Iron and Wine. I'll never be a Cursive fan despite how much I like the Good Life. Just doesn't do it for me.

Funny story, a few years ago this high school kid was telling me about how the Postal Service covered the Iron and Wine song from Garden State and I had to correct his ass post haste.

This is where I bring up how I went to their Ugly Organ tour in 03, but only to see The Appleseed Cast and then left half way through the "mesmerizing" Cursive set so that I could get back on the road sooner.

I saw them with TAC in '03 as well. Mae was the special guest. Great show, but TAC stole the show.

I personally think Rolling Stone sucks, but alot of you seem to like them, so here's the review:

Ex-pantera singer Phil Anselmo doesn't believe in A's for effort. "Never try/You either do it or don't waste your time," he growls in "Never Try," in a voice etched with scars from his own blues and trouble (the messy breakup of his old band, a personal war with hard drugs -- he's been clean since 2002 -- and the near-destruction of his New Orleans home to Hurricane Katrina). But Down, originally started as a Pantera side project, are a clear-cut victory in their own right, making Southern metal of depth and color as well as of scrap-iron constitution. Guitarists Pepper Keenan (from Corrosion of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein stutter in furious Thin Lizzy tandem in "N.O.D.," then swim like black-fuzz snakes through swamp water in "Beneath the Tides." The backing harmonies in "I Scream" have the scuffed-brass sheen of classic Van Halen, while Anselmo has hit on a strange but perfect vocal truce of James Hetfield and Deep Purple-era David Coverdale: avenging metal and overheated white soul. Over the Under is not yet the hard-rock album of '07; there is some time to go. But it is a main contender.

4/5 Stars.

here's a collection of tracks:

"Nothing In Return (Walk Away)" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=CpobPlO6HHY)
"3 Suns And 1 Star" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=9Ml3Qng6K_4)
