View Full Version : Was Yoda retarded when he was younger?

In the original trilogy Yoda only used the backwards-talking thing now and then to emphasize something. Most of his lines were delivered normally. But in the new trilogy every freakin sentence out of his mouth is backwards. "With the wookies good relations I have"?! WTF?! I know you can talk normally, I've heard it! So knock it off you green douchebag, you're not fooling anyone!

And yeah, I noticed that too.

Yoda wasn't retarded when he was younger... during Jedi college he joined a frat and became an alcoholic. He spends episodes I-III in an alcoholic stupor that he finally is able to break once he is forced into exile and the booze that he craves is no longer available... In later episodes, he sometimes reverts to speaking backwards due to the excessive loss of brain cells from years of alcohol abuse... duh.
yeah, the backwards talking was definitely overdone
"around the survivors a perimeter create"
"not if anything to say about it I have"

I want someone to take that scene of Vader shouting "NOOOOO" like a tool and overdub Jake Lloyd shouting "YIPEE" from Episode 1.
I also like his total Frankenstein maneuver busting off the operating table.

That's microcosmic of why I ultimately was really disappointed of the film. Such and such scene scene was great until so and so said/did that.
Also, the Iguana thing was dumb looking (Why not take a fucking cool car???) and Grevious was useless.
Curiously, I think (Mace Windu's tour de farce notwithstanding) it was the best acted of all six films.

I suppose it's a good diversionary tactic, but still disappointing. :?
This is probably unfair, but I wasn't terribly impressed with anything Jackson did in Episode II.

This sounds like that Energizer commercial they had many many many years ago, where Vader tried to kill the Energizer Bunny and finds out his lightsaber used inferior batteries.

Yeah he only killed fuckin Qui-Gon Jinn! Which lead to bigger things in Episode III.My point is, as a character, Darth Maul was a monumental let down.
Marketing led some of us to believe that Darth Maul was to be the lynch pin of the whole freaking movie.
Boba Fett performed far above his background character origins.
Count Dooku served his purpose.
Darth Vader already got his dues.

The point of Grevious was to make a definitive "kill this guy and end the war" plot point. From a story standpoint, it made perfect sense to have a high-ranking general whose death would signal the defeat of the opposing side.
But... whether or not he looked cool or if the coughing was annoying... that's a whole different argument.

I liked the Frankenstein thing, the lurching off the table made sense, what with the new legs and all, but I hated the "NOOO". I don't think it was even the "NOOO" so much as it was the fists raised in the patented gesture-of-ultimate-anguish. I thought he was going to rub ashes on his face...

Yoda's just remembered for the backwards speech. "Of sex with young boys Yoda know not. Old Yoda is. Resign he shall."
Did anyone else laugh out loud when Darth vader yelled "Nooooo!"? I was expecting him to yell "Mendozaaa!" next.
Apparantly when Prince Charles heard that Princess Diana was dead he screamed "Nooooo!" so loud people three floors away could hear it. So that reaction's borderline realistic.

He should have taken the entire room down, killing everyone in it but himself and the emperor. But that really was the only portion of the flick I thought could stand improvement.

I know this was posted a while ago, but I just watched Empire and Jedi again, and I have to say, you're wrong. The vast majority of Yoda's lines are spoken in the same form as in the prequels. Kirshner even talks about it at great length, how its his way of speaking. Go back and watch his scenes again.

I hate when movies require you to read or view other media in order to fully understand what goes on in the movie. They pulled that shit with Blair Witch - "Oh, if you read the website and the comics and watch the SciFi special, then you'll see what a scaaaaary movie it is." Umm, no. I just want to watch the movie. If they aren't going to explain why he's coughing in E3, he shouldn't be fucking coughing.

It's fucking distracting. And your spoon-fed comment makes no sense. It's not like they explained the coughing in some subtle, artistic way. It wasn't explained at all in the movie. And, if I'm watching the movie, I'd rather spend my thoughts on things that are important and not on things that have nothing to do with the movie, like the coughing. But when he coughs every 2 seconds, it's kind of hard to ignore it. It's not like the coughing ruined the movie for me. I just thought it was stupid and distracting and the "go watch the cartoons" excuse is gay.

Why did the coughing NEED explaining? I say it doesn't. It was a character quirk, something different. Want extra info? Its over there in the cartoon. Need the info? Hell no.
To complain the coughing wasn't explained is to me like complaining ESB didnt tell us why Yoda talked funny, or why Vader needed to use the machine that takes his mask off. We dont need to know.

while i must agree that a coughing robot is strange (none of my robots cough, and if they ever do i'll dismantle the fuckers), he did appear to have some organics early on . (particularly when they showed the closeups of his face) never saw the cartoon, i just assumed the coughing was due to some problem with the organics.
