View Full Version : Marvel's new What If? Solicitations are annoying me again...

They still aren't following the "What If?" formula, of having the title pose an exact question, like "What if Captain America Survived World War II?" or "What if Spider-Man Joined the Fantastic Four?", not generalities like "What If? Civil War"

When I started collecting comics, my favorite books to dig out of back issue bins were "Marvel Team-Up" and "What If?", and Marvel's lack of proper titling on these titles annoy me.

Stupid Marvel.

Those are horrible titles though. Maybe they could include something on the cover.

feel better now?
the problem with 'What if?' now a days is that Marvel has so many arcs or books that venture into 'what if spidey went into door b?' that a old-school 'what if?' seems superflous.
also, a lotta the major company crossover books have certain fans asking how could this or that be different? and that's what the new what if does.
...you really dont care, do you?

Oh goddamnit, I hope they're not stealing him away from KOTOR. He's the best artist working on any of the SW books I've seen in ages.

But he was there. In the form of Bendis. :)

He should've been drawn wearing the Watcher's toga.

Fortunately, while not evident from the titles and cover treatments, each of these new What If stories will have titles that are questions, Steve. Ralph and I have tried our best to steer them back in that direction these past couple years after a few experiments. What If stories have always been about a divergence in continuity. What if a character made a different choice at a key point in a story? What if they zigged instead of zagged? It's about finding a pivotal moment and taking it in another direction. For a while there, that core concept was lost and What If stories were being made up whole cloth or being set in different universes, which some of us felt was fundamentally opposite of what the book was supposed to be about. They were good stories with cool premises, sure, but these are What If stories, not Elseworlds tales. Hopefully, from what I see, that's all been rectified and we should be getting some kick ass What If stories again!

Take care,
C.B.

My son did not understand why The Watcher was absent from the Bendis penned volumes.

Wasn't there a bald guy who introduced each of those stories?

Edit: This is what I get for not refreshing before responding.

I prefer the titles on the covers too, they provide a good hook to draw in the casual reader.

I sympathize, CB, but that's part of the fun of those What If's.

I spent a summer re-boxing and cataloging the Read More Comics' back stock. I found ass loads of old What If's that were just so stupid, they had to be awesome...

"What If? .... Conan The Barbarian was stranded in the 20th Century?"
"What If? .... Thor battled Conan The Barbarian?"
"What If? .... The Avengers Defeated Everybody?"
"What If? .... Professor X of the X-Men had become Juggernaut?"
"What If? .... The Vision of the Avengers Had Conquered the World?"
"What If? .... Wolverine Was Lord of All Vampires?"
"What If? .... Wolverine had been Lord of the Vampires ....During The Inferno?"
"What If? .... The Gamma Bomb Spawned A Thousand Hulks?"

I mean....just awesome!

"What If? .... Conan The Barbarian was stranded in the 20th Century?"

is about the greatest comic I've ever read. At one point, Conan becomes a pimp.

"What If? .... The Avengers Defeated Everybody?"A great companion piece to Avengers Annual #2 and I believe the first appearance of Underwear Man.
