Hairspray - Wow, I really didn't think I'd like this movie (holding the original so near and dear and all) but I really really liked this movie, I like how it's totally unlike the original, which mean I can love them both. :D
Big Fish - I really, really love this movie and the last 10 minutes get to me every single time. It proves that Tim Burton is anything but a one trick pony,.

Definitely Tim Burton stretching his cinematic muscles in that movie.

Just watched Frontiere(s). Supposedly France's "answer to Saw and Hostel". But it didn't come off as torture porn at all. It came off as more of a actual horror movie. Nicely done and incredible music for such a film. It was banned from Horrorfest because it was too intense/graphic apparently.

I only caught about the last 2/3rds of it. I thought it was okay. Definitely light on the horror aspects, but it was entertaining enough to keep my interest. I'm presuming there will be a 4th based on how it ended right?
An Sneakers is awesome. It's been so long since I'd seen it I forgot that River Phoenix was even in it.

I saw two movies while getting drunk.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. To my surprise, I laughed hard throughout the whole movie. Not sure how funny it is sober, but it's sure funny as hell while drunk.
Jumper. Watched this while a friend and I were finishing our third bottle of wine. I don't remember the third act at all. Thought Annakin was okay, Billy Elliot being in a movie like this was a surprise, Ms. O.C. was tolerable...but what's up with Samuel Jackson's white hair? Overall, a predictable but pleasant mindless diversion while drinking. Vaguely remember watching a behind-the-scenes featurette and thinking that the director (Doug Lyman of Bourne Identity, Go, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith fame--wait, he also executively produced The O.C., ahhhhh, hence the casting of Ms. O.C.) looked like a muppet.
The next two movies on my Netflix Queue are The Signal (made by fellow Atlantans--Atlanteans?--and staring a friend of an ex) and Them (glad Rosemary's Baby liked it).

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - Better than I remembered it, but still my least favorite of the original three. Leagues ahead of Crystal Skull though. I enjoyed Connery's performance much more this time around than previous viewings. He's oddly dopey and lovable.
Incredible Hulk - Pretty good actually, much better than I thought it'd be. I really like Norton's Banner. The final battle was cool to watch, but man the dialogue was awful.
Trekkies - I've never seen an episode of Star Trek anything, but was in the mood for something light and disposable. This has been on my DVD shelf for years (it's Cheegy's), and I'm glad to say I finally watched it. It wasn't amazing, but fairly interesting. Only a few of the nerds really bothered me. I thought some of the casts stories were pretty great.
The Host - Didn't love it, and didn't hate it. It was just average. I never found it particularly funny. I'm not even sure if it's trying to be "haha" funny. Most of the characters annoyed me. Good cinematography for the most part, but some of the scenes had a garish quality to them (and I'm not talking special effects wise).

The Incredible Hulk
I dug it, but I was still hoping for a bit more, you know? I wanted a bit more introspection--like why is the Hulk so freakin' angry all the time--and I also wanted more smashin'. I thought the final fight was going to be a bit more epic in scope. Overall, I give it a B+.

The Street Fighter-I couldnt get into it. The violence was interesting but the rest of the movie...
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang-First Blu Ray rented. It's a cool movie, I really liked it.
Into the Wild- well executed flic, but the story is so engrossing it would take a Herculean effort to fuck it up. Good movie.
Semi Pro- a decent enough comedy, although like some of Ferrell's other stuff its a little hit and miss. Although it includes one of the funniest things a ball player SHOULD say to a ref- "suck my cock. I'll murder your family". Completely out of the blue and unexpected. Almost worth it for that scene alone.

The Incredible Hulk A decent enough movie with some good scenes of Hulk smashing shit, despite the Hulk obviously being CGI. A nice Marvel U take on the TV series. The opening credits were great! I also loved the the inspired casting of such a weird perfomer like Tim Blake Nelson, who I hope comes back as The Leader.
The New Frontier I thought it was ok, a bit too condensed, though. I mean, I suppose the main is story there, but all the great details that fill out the manic pacing of the comic, are missing. Because of that it doesn't seem quite as special and rather ordinary...
Spider-Man 3: I had originally seen it on a pirated DVD, so it was time to watch my Blu-Ray version to see what the Hell was going on.
Hitman: I have a man-crush on Timothy Olyphant. Movie was a little light on story, but for a videogame-based movie, they did quite well.

I watched all of these yesterday (I had the day off):
Rambo: The only Rambo film I've seen, and probably the only one I'll ever see. Meh.
Smokin' Aces: I liked it, but the last thirty minutes had a totally different tone than the first ninety.
There Will Be Blood: Interesting, but that's a film I never need to see again.
American Gangster: Really good.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: Interesting French film, based on a true story, about a man who suffers a stroke that leaves him almost completely paralyzed. He dictated a book about his experience by blinking.
The Incredible Hulk: A solid effort, but something about it left me wanting.

Platoon. I've had this movie for years and have never watched it until now. It was pretty good.
La Mala Educación (Bad Education). It was pretty gay. It's the first movie by Almodóvar I've seen, and I loved the whole story, within a story, within even another story. I enjoyed watching it, but I don't know if it's really as amazing as other people say it is. I did like it though. A lot.

Juno: I did not care much for this film, and I went in expecting to like it. You can definitely tell that the story came after the character here - Diablo Cody created this Juno character and she could have given her any story she wanted, but she gave her the story for which she is least suited - teen pregnancy. I just did not buy, for one second, that this character had a living, breathing person growing inside of her. I'm not saying I needed to see her written as a walking womb, but I just didn't find this to be a believable depiction of teenage pregnancy, and given how the pregnancy is the central object of the movie, that's what I needed to see to believe in the movie. Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner are the only actors in the movie displaying something remotely resembling human behavior, in my opinion. I couldn't believe how much I did not like the Michael Cera character. And that final scene - nice try, but a punk chick in high school wouldn't be caught DEAD listening to indie twee, much less performing it.
Citizen Kane: For the first time. Not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but it was definitely a balls-flatteningly awesome movie worth every bit of the hype bestowed upon it.

War Inc: I enjoyed it, mostly because of Cusak. It got shaky for me near the end.
Pi: There were parts about it I really liked, and parts I hated. I really liked the dynamic between Max and the Professor, and Max's slow decline in to insanity, but some of the acting was pretty terrible.
Khadak: Amazing scenery and atmosphere, and very emotional. Sort of minimalist from a storytelling perspective, but it had depth. One of the most interesting movies I've seen in a while.

The Sound of Thunder Wow. This is movie is just plain DUMB. It's sad that something with a production budget of $80 million looks like something made for the Sci-Fi Channel. Yowzas!
No End in Sight Pretty great documentary that clearly explains through interviews with the peope involved how and why the Iraq War turned out the way it did. Seek this out.
Crime Wave This mid-50s crime/noir/police procedural with Sterling Haydin is pretty standard stuff, but the way it was just filmed/shot raises it out of the trenches to make it more endearing.

Just finished The Signal on Blu-Ray last night. Loved it. It was freaky watching it, 'cuz I used to know the female star of it--Anessa--this girl who kept saying, "There's no 'V' in Anessa." She used to be a waitress at my regular hangout, Apres Diem, an Atlanta, Cafe. Hip pixie-like girl, super-funny, and a friend of my last ex-girlfriend, who used to also waitress there; knew she was into horror but didn't know she was an actress. It's amazing how in the middle of Hollywood pumpin' out PG-13 horror crap and remakes and shit geared towards teenagers, an indie-horror film like this can blow 'em all out of the water. This and The Orphanage are my favorite horror movies I've seen in the past...year, maybe? Check out its trailer:

The Diving Bell And The Butterfly - Wow. Just, wow. The range of emotions I felt watching this film was amazing. The most profound thing I've seen in ages. We should all be thankful each morning just for the ability to walk and function on our own. I hope this movie stays with me for a long time because I don't want to lose that feeling in the day to day grind of the rat race.
Speaking of which...
Into The Wild - In a way, a lot like The Diving Bell And The Butterfly in it's concept of striving for meaning in life but in the materialistic modern world rather than just to live, period. A few times you want the grab the boy and give him a shake as you can't decide if he's just reckless or really has seen the light that we all haven't. A very good film with a nice Eddie Vedder sondtrack.

Rescue Dawn - Fantastic movie. I was shocked at how good it was. Nearly had me in tears by the end.
Mongol - If I had to rate this film, I'd give it a 7.5. I thought it was great up until the ending, which was just a little too silly for me. I can suspend disbelief like a motherfucker, but it pushed even my limits. Asano Tadanobu is one of my favorite actors and he does a fantastic job. Some of the cg, especially in the battle scenes, looked a bit outdated, but it doesn't affect my opinion on the film all that much. Part of a trilogy on the life of Genghis Kahn. Can't wait for the other two.

Mongol - Eh...it was okay. Nothing spectacular but not horrible by any means. I didn't think the digital blood smeared battle scenes fit with the drama. They seemed over the top and not very classy. I didn't think the story was all that compelling either. It had it's moments, but I want see Genghis Kahn's later years that's for sure.
The Golden Compass - Holy shit! That was fucking awful. They totally one hundred percent butchered the novel. They took everything that was great, and spit on it. Everything was rush rush rush. I swear there isn't a scene in this movie that is over two minutes long. They don't let anything incubate in your brain. I can't even imagine it making any sense or being a cohesive story if you've never read the book. Nothing has any weight to it nor any emotional resonance. So they rush all the way to the end of the book, and then removed the fucking ending! They removed the entire point of the story! That's insane, dreadful, disgusting, and I'm glad this movie bombed. my wife is watching mr & mrs smith right now and i must say that if an assasin comes for me i hope it is angelina. what a way to go. sigh.
Wall-E: Achingly beautiful.
2001: A Space Odyssey: I realize this movie is an enormously influential classic, and I probably need to watch it a few more times. But do the shots really need to take so long? I'm all for glacial pacing when the film requires it, but it feels like a lot of these long, lingering shots are just extended for no reason with no real revelation to justify their extraordinary length. I admire craftsmanship, and I can tell a lot of work went into the various spaceship shots. I just don't necessarily feel that I needed five minutes every time to take them in.

It's been a good day for animation.
Both movies were absolutely beautiful to behold, were touching on a deeply human level, and had music that sticks with you long after they're over.
I highly recommend people seek out both of them. (The former shouldn't be too hard. :p)

ZODIAC: I've always been fascinated with the Zodiac killings, and I FINALLY saw this Downey Jnr / Gyllenhaal / Ruffalo one by the guy who did Se7en. And by FINALLY, I mean because I acidentally tuned into a movie made the year before, called THE ZODIAC, based on the same things, but really really bad with a horrible stupid ending.
Although, the murder scenes were more graphic, oddly enough.
Anyway, great film, great performances.
THE COURT JESTER: My all time fav. Finally came out on DVD in Aus a few months back, but saved it to give to my dad. Danny Kaye. Basil Rathbone. Angela Lansbury. Just hilarious, I'd suggest it to anyone who liked The Princess Bride and Men In Tights. Like I said, one of my all time fav's.

Near Dark -- it didn't hold up like I thought it would've, but damn, the bar scene is still unsettling as all hell. It'll be interesting to see how the remake is handled.
Night of the Creeps -- OK, so did USA Network always screw with films back in the day? I remember on a lot of movies I watched like Child's Play 2 and Needful Things had added/alternate scenes. I specifically remember watching this on Up All Night and the ending was completely different. In the version I watched last night, the detective dies in the blast and the girl gets killed by the dog. In the version I watched as a kid, and I remember this because it gave me nightmares for a month, the detective walks away from the blast, falls to the ground, his head opens up, and the slugs take off. WTF?

Lost in Translation - Still great.
Wall-E - I honestly think the board will crash if another positive thing is said about this masterpiece...oh no.
I Am Legend - Good but easily could have been great. Will Smith's performance was actually top notch. He shocked me at how subtle he could be at times. Some of the imagery was absolutely gorgeous. I have the same complaint as everyone else the overuse of CG, and bad CG at that. The infected were poorly designed, and did not fit with the tone of the movie at all. Plus them having a leader was just dumb. It didn't ruin the movie, I was still entertained, but it's sad to think of what could've been.

Tangerine Dream is a musical group from the 80's that did mostly ambient synth instrumental albums. They're best known for doing the soundtrack for (the theatrical release of) the movie, Legend. I actually didn't know that they did the soundtrack for Near Dark...
One of their members, Paul Haslinger, went on to compose the score to the first Underworld movie also!

Yakuza Papers: Battles Without Honor or Humanity - Just awesome. It's the first in a five film series that I can't wait to delve further into. They're directed by Kinji Fukasaku, famous for Battle Royale. I've always been very fascinated with the Yakuza so this is perfect. I mean really, what kinda asshole wouldn't want to watch this?
Fireworks - I haven't seen much Takeshi Kitano and this is supposed to be his best film. I very much enjoyed it, but I think I expected a little bit more. While it was expertly shot and edited, I wanted the violence to have more purpose. Beat sure is a bad ass in it though. 8 out of 10.
Serenity - Third time watching it. Still a ton of fun. I swear I'm shocked every time I see him die.

Kung Fu Panda
At first I wasn't really into it. Mainly because Po was simply a bumbling Jack Black, and not a character. That and I didn't really like the voice/ design of his father. Once Po is chosen as the Dragon Warrior I started to fall in love. I really liked all of the five, and Po's two masters. There were a lot of well written scenes, and some fantastic looking backdrops. They went crazy with the color palette, and made every scene as visually stunning as possible. The fight scenes were fantastic, my personal favorite being the battle over the last dumpling. I kept thinking that the next TMNT movie is going to have it's work cut out for it. That was pretty great. It's better than Cars, but still not quite as magical as the other eight Pixar movies. I hope they keep this up though, competition is always a good thing.
The Pianist
I swear I was destined to never own this movie. I picked it up years ago used, and it skipped quite a bit near the middle. I was able to get through it, but it really destroyed the experience. I ordered it online years later, and it never came (of course I was refunded). I finally picked it up for a third time (this time on HD-DVD) and watched it tonight. It's such a fantastic film. It just gets progressively better. The third act is brilliant, and Adrian Brody really shines. The piece of music he plays for the empathetic German is amazing. Great cinematography throughout as well, some of the locations are jaw dropping.

Watch this one as part of a double feature with I Am Legend if you want a perfect illustration of how Hollywood can take some good source material and dumb it down for modern audiences.

Great, bleak film. About what a teen had to go through to get an abortion in late Soviet Romania, shot Dogme style. It took me two starts to get in, but once there the film grabs hold and forces you to watch the proceedings. It's absolutely worth the near nausea and anxiety. Fantastic.

That's a movie with not much replay value. It's amazing, but I think I'll stay away for a while. It really got underneath my skin. That last scene nearly killed me.

Agreed. I had to leave the room at one point (which is rare for me, but it was getting a little too icky. In your face abortion is one of the few things in cinema that reduces me to the 12 year old who left the theatre in the face disintegration scene in Poltergeist) and I asked my wife if I'd missed anything. She told me what I'd missed (not much, graphically) and as much as I ended up liking the film, I really didn't need to go back and catch that.

Yeah, there's definitely some ick in there, but it never feels cheap or tossed in for shock value. It's just part of the film that you wouldn't mind forgetting.
I couldn't believe that the man performing the abortion wanted sex from the friend. Or rather, I just didn't want it to occur. Then when she cleans herself off in the tub...tough stuff. And as you say, bleak.
That looooooong shot at the dinner table was incredible.

My wife is Romanian so we had to go and see that as soon as it came out. We even purchased the DVD when it was released recently. I felt the movie was VERY well done and unnerving (although it should be unnerving). The scenes you mentioned in the spoiler hit me as well, and who could forget the certain bathroom scene you've eluded to which makes it hit home. I also left the theater really hating her pregnant friend who never really showed a shrewd of responsibility, especially for EVERYTHING the Friend with a capital F endured to correct her "mistake." That being said I would definitely reccomend this film to anyone.
On this Romanian film slant, has anyone here seen 'The Death of Mr. Lazarescu"? Another great unnerving film from the last couple years.
Another film I've seen recently was "Black Book" which was superbly done in my opinion and I felt the outrage over the sex in it was much ado about nothing. There was some but nothing over the top or distracting. It was a great story with great characters and I felt the actors did a fantastic job. Not uplifting, but not many movies about World War II and Jews are. Another recommendation.

Casino Royale -- the new 007 trailer got me wanting to see this film again. Gets better with every viewing.
In Bruges -- Not the wacky comedy the previews make it out to me. A really good film that covers a lot of ground. And Ralph Fiennes is really good in it. Imagine that.

I saw Lazarescu, and I think in the final assessment I liked it, but I was kind of put off because I was led to believe it was a comedy, and not biting (read: unfunny if you don't live there, and even then...) social satire.
Black Book was great - it's what I always want from these foreign directors who do great films at home then come to H'wood and make less great to shitty films (I'm kicking YOUR balls, John Woo!). I always wish that if they're not going to outright leave, they should at least go home and find themselves. Of course, I have a soft spot for Verhoeven. He directed "The Fourth Man" back in the late 70's. (Not released in the US until '84, for all the sticklers).

I had the fortune to know ahead of time exactly what Lazarescu was about so I knew not to expect a comedy but rather a social satire. I also know exactly what you mean about foreign directors. I am tired of seeing and hearing of great directors from overseas and then having them deliver subpar performances here. Although it makes me wonder if it's the directors fault or perhaps a flawed system we have in place instead.

Peking Opera Blues - I'm not sure I've ever seen so many different genres combined so successfully to form one film. At no point did I ever feel the film didn't know what it wanted to be, which happens so often when a filmmaker tries to do what Tsui Hark here. Political drama, martial arts, slapstick, mystery, romance, period piece, costume drama - all are represented. Such an amazing film.

I enjoyed both. Timecrimes is insanely clever.
I'm glad you saw (and enjoyed) Los Cronocrímenes (2007). At some point the narrative goes on like clockwork and it's up to Karra Elejalde to carry the movie with his performance alone. And he does a great job as a man who is confused about how he could have allowed this to happened, but also has a violent streak and is determined to fix the problem, whatever needs to be done.

Hellboy - Some of the wire-fu and effects have aged, but it's a fun action flick with heart. I don't love it nor hate it.
Hellboy II - As I said in the official thread I fucking loved this movie. I thought Del Toro nailed it. It's such an odd film. The only thing I hated was kid Hellboy in the beginning, that was a whole new kind of awful. Everything after that scene left me with a big smile on my face. Gorgeous fantasy with fun super heroics makes for a fine feature in my book.
Batman Begins - Still have minor quibbles here and there, but it's a great film. I always forget how well everything connects. It was pretty ballsy to go with Scarecrow and Ra's for the first villains in a new franchise.

The Invisible. - Terrible film. Brainless and unoriginal. I could write a better movie while in the grip of a hallucinatory fever. David Goyer should be ashamed to have his name on this.

Ditto. Bottle Rocket is a close second. I don't know why, and I'm probably in the minority on this, but *leans closer, whispering*...I'm not a big fan or his other films. There are scenes in his later films that are like perfect moments, but his movies (maybe it's the fact that he uses other co-writers instead of Owen Wilson now) seem like caricatures of his own films. Don't know.

I tend to agree. I think it started to happen around the time of LIFE AQUATIC, which was the first film written without Owen Wilson. So I think that there's the possibility that Wilson is the guy that grounds Anderson, not in reality, but in the humanity behind the character's attempts to build their own realities. It's hard to pin down, but this seems to be the movie where the balance is perfect. So much of it is funny, and so much of it is heartbreaking. The look on Murray's face when Max finally introduces him to his barber father might be the best piece of acting Murray's ever done, and that's in a movie filled with such moments of pathos and grace from him, and from the rest of that cast for that matter.

Shit, I gotta go rent this again. Haven't seen it in years. I vaguely remember a look Murray had after a prank (I believe it dealt with bees) pulled off by Schwartzman's character: if I remember correctly, at first he's angry and shocked...then a smile creeps into his face.

First there's the shock that bees are in his room, then the smile when he realizes it's Max, then a pure look of "Of course you know, this means war."
Also, lovely, lovely work by Olivia Williams, especially in the scene where Max fakes the accident to get into her house and finds her spending her nights in her dead husband's old boyhood bedroom.

Last four movies I watched.
The Dark Knight: Awesome. It was a bit long (those chase sequences, though well done, felt a bit overdrawn), but Heath Ledger's performance more than made it worth while. It's what Daniel Day-Lewis' Daniel Plainview was last year. Really, really good. Watch out for the pencil scene. Great stuff. Everybody's talking about how this Joker's replaced Nicholson's humor and buffonery, but I think Ledger's performance is much funnier. Sure, it's scarier, but I found myself laughing out loud throughout the scene. Also: the film stopped at the climax, and the audience went wild. Almost rioted, and shit. Well, not really but they screamed. Anyways, they sorted it out, and we saw the ending, and it was good, though kinda depressing.
In Bruges: Great movie. Specially the beginning scenes. Ralph Fiennes was fucking excellent, and Colin Farrel was great too. Nice script, though the ending felt a bit clumsy.
All The President's Men: Though at first I didn't quite understand what the fuck was going on, because the movie just kept going and going and never took a moment to just breath a bit, I still enjoyed myself. It's a long movie, but it went by fairly quickly, and by the end it really grabbed me. Great stuff.
Be Kind Rewind: Pretty much sucked. Had some good parts, and some clever bits of direction (like Jack Black magnetizing our point of view when he got close to the camera, and the way they filmed certain things, like 2001 and Men In Black), but was mostly really silly and the ending was really bad.
Overall... I don't know which one's the best. Possibly The Dark Knight, though In Bruges would be very closely behind along with All The President's Men.

Number 8 on my Top Ten Films Of All Time. You are in for a treat, Sir. Assuming you haven't seen it before, that is. If you have seen it before then you already know what delights await you.
My last two were:
Harold And Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay.
I can't really say I was disappointed by this film as I had very low expectations of it in the first place. I saw the first one at a friends insistance and although I thought it was quite poor overall, it did have enough funny bits to warrant me checking out the sequel. Sadly, the sequel has even less going for it than the original. It made me smile once or twice and made e laugh out loud once (at one of NPH's bits) but other than that it was just juvenile and disgusting. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I quite enjoy films that are deliberately juvenile and "frat-boy"-esque, but this one wasn't one of them.
Doomsday.
A good, fun action-horror from the writer/director of Dog Soldiers and The Descent. It ripped heavily from quite a few other films (The Resident Evil's, 28 Days/Weeks Later, From Dusk Till Dawn, Mad Max, The Warriors and especially Escape From New York/L.A) but it repackaged and presented them in a way that was still thoroughly entertaining if not the most original of efforts. Plus, Rhona Mitra is so fine it hurts, so that's a bonus.

Starting out in the evening: Little slow but worked. Great acting with subtle character development. Always wondered what Langellas penis looked like.
King of Kong: Loved the two guys relationships with their wives. One wife tolerant but annoyed and then completely supportive and defensive and one was a jerk to everybody but clung onto his wife when he was unsure of how to react in the arcade.

There Will Be Blood- Took about 1/2 of the movie to convince me it was a good movie and the ending convinced me it was a great movie. Im not so sure it would've worked with anyone BUT Daniel Day-Lewis. His over-acting always sells me.
End of Days- Not as bad as I remember. Great soundtrack but muddled in the score during the movie for some reason.

The Dark Knight. - Eckhart is a real standout.
Snatch. - as many times as I've seen it, I still think it's just fucking fantastic. Never got the haters. It's practically a heist movie. And a top one, at that.
