Vadim Perelman to direct 'Atlas'
Jolie to star in Lionsgate's Ayn Rand adaptation
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Perelman
Lionsgate has brought on Vadim Perelman to rewrite "Atlas Shrugged" and direct Angelina Jolie in the starring role.
While Lionsgate needs to get a final script before formally committing to a start date with Perelman at the helm, the move puts the company in a strong position for an early 2008 production start, just a shade over 50 years after Ayn Rand's famed novel was first published in 1957.
Pic will be produced by Howard and Karen Baldwin and Media Talent Group's Geyer Kosinski.
Perelman will work from a draft of the script penned by "Braveheart" scribe Randall Wallace, who managed to boil down the Rand manifesto of 1,100-plus pages into a 127-page script. The drama revolves around what happens when great industrialists and thinkers go on strike and the world grinds to a halt.
Wallace will remain involved, and in a recent meeting with Perelman, the pair traded Russian dialogue. Perelman was born in Kiev, while Wallace has picked up the language researching his Catherine the Great pic "The Mercenary"; Rand was born in Russia. Perelman has brought his own take that will be incorporated into Wallace's script.
Perelman's latest film, the Uma Thurman-Evan Rachel Wood starrer "In Bloom," premieres at the Toronto Film Festival. It's his first since his 2003 breakthrough, "House of Sand and Fog."
Jolie starts work in early fall on the Clint Eastwood-directed "The Changeling" for Universal, Imagine and Malpaso. She would like to follow with "Atlas Shrugged," long a passion project for her.

I might've met that guy a few months ago at a party... I met some guy who was producing this. Could've been any number of other producers I guess.
Needless to say, I'm unimportant & didn't keep in touch with the guy enough to remember if his name had been Howard.

Mrf. I find Angelina Jolie dreadfully tiresome. I'd be interested in an Atlas Shrugged movie, but I'd prefer someone like Naomi Watts in the lead role.

I agree. I for one do find Jolie attractive but she's far too exotic looking for Dagny Taggart, who I envision to be just slightly above average in appearance and not some Goddess-like beauty.
Now, Naomi Watts would be really good in the role, not because I think she's only 'slightly above average in appearance,' in fact I happen to think she's the most beautiful woman in Hollywood, BUT she can take it down a notch and it'd still be believable. If they tried to make Jolie look less attractive it just wouldn't work. It'd look like they were putting a burlap bag on a model and saying she's trying to look like a homeless person.
That and... well Naomi Watts is a better actress anyway.
Supposedly, Brad Pitt is going to be playing John Galt.
Sounds like a train wreck already, IMHO

I am waiting for the backlash from all this board on the fact that Atlas Shrugged is being made into a movie.

It'll degrade into the same predictable line a' crap. It'll be glorious.
Benbo Libs: ZOMG THAT IS HORRIBLE. AYN RAND IS THE ANTICHRIST. SHE'S SUCH A BIG MEANIE. I'M NEVER WATCHING AN ANGELINA JOLIE MOVIE AGAIN!!! SHE USED TO BE HOT, NOT ANYMORE!!! SHE'S LOST MY RESPECT!!!
Benbo Libertarians: ZOMG THIS IS AWSUM!!!. I LOVE ANGELINA JOLIE!!! FUCK BIG GOVERNMENT!!!
I don't even know how the BenBo Cons will react.

There's a wierd murkiness on the board about the BMB Cons/Libertarians. That is, most cons shy from saying directly (other than Van Sciver) "I AM A CONSERVATIVE" so they can effortlessly slide into Libertarian mode and deflect some of the heat they receive.
But you're right. Most Libs on the board think Rand is the antichrist. I think none of them have noticed yet that there's going to be a big Objectivist movie coming out with a big name attatched. There will be an explosion.

I hope it's actually good, but I'd rather it be a TNT mini-series.

if it sucks (or deviates from the spirit of the book), will Rand come back from the dead and blow up the studio?
will Ditko???

Cool! Just saw this. Hope it's not true about Jolie. She wouldn't fit at all.

Is it ironic that this movie is being fast-tracked because of the impending writers strike?

As with any adaptation of a lengthy source material, I'm looking forward to seeing just how they go about doing it.

I personally have always thought Rand to be a hack and never cared for her work, though I don't think she's the anti-Christ either. Just a bad writer with some rather silly ideas. That said if the movie sounds good I'll probably see it.

Heh heh. Well done.
I have nothing to say about the movie at this time.
I just wanted to approve of all the Bioshock comments.

Ha! Now you've got me waiting for your opus, Brad. :)
And the idea that Brad Pitt and Jolie aren't capable of acting their asses off is crazy. Pitt, especially, is a fantastic actor... they just suffer from being so goddamn beautiful.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not comparing myself to Rand. Though I'm certain I could write a better comic book script than she could have. :)
I guess hack is a stretch but I'm certainly not a huge fan of her work as a whole and less so when it comes to Ayn Rand the person.
I just found Atlas Shrugged vastly overrated but actually sort of enjoyed The Fountainhead. I think my biggest thing is how many people look at her works of fiction as an almost textbook way to live their lives. It's silly to me, like if some nutty sci-fi author would create a religion centered around an alien named Xenu and..wait, nevermind.

Oh, I've never read it - no dog in the fight, it just sounded like you were read to rumble. :)
And I don't know about the 'life inspiration from fiction' thing, lately I'm finding reality way overrated. I think I'm getting ready to tumble into some hardcore escapism (esp. after finishing the stuff I'm working on).
And, BTW, remind me to tell you some time my idea for starting a reformist, pro-Xenu movement.

I hear you. Reality is depressing and I'm starting to think crazy might not be that bad. I've often wondered if you just wake up one morning and realize you're nuts or if you never know until you're locked in a padded cell. You know, like the guys walking around shouting obscenities to themselves. Do they know they're crazy? Then again, I began rereading Catcher in the Rye today for the first time since high school and perhaps it's having a bigger impact on me now at 31 than it did at 14.

I actually welcome our alien overlords. :)

This will end up not happening as everyone involved realizes what a massive undertaking this will be (especially to do it justice) - let alone for anything less that a four hour movie (at least).
And I think Joliee and Pitt are good actors, but I agree that they'd be all wrong for Atlas Shrugged.
