View Full Version : Whoa, Millar and McNiven on Wolverine?!?!

I didn't see this on any other website's reports, so I am a bit skeptical about this, but on the Cup o' Joe report, the report at http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/news/118687425339998.htm had it listed as Mark Millar and Steve McNiven as the new creative team of Wolverine. Don't know if this is just a typo or what, but it'd be badass if it's true.
This isn't mentioned anywhere in Newsarama's report of the Cup 'O Joe panel.

That's why I'm skeptical until I see more confirmation.

Seems incredibly unlikely that McNiven would be doing something in addition to his stint on ASM.

We don't know how long his stint on Spider-Man is. Steve and Mark are working on something next year though. Mark's been talking about it and he said something about it being announced at Chicago.
Here's a quote Mark posted a couple of weeks ago;
It's been quite frustrating not been able to talk about all the things I've been working on. But understandably Marvel wanted to make a splash and they have some cool stuff lined up, especially in relation to the big book I'm taking over with The Hitchster.
Also, look out for info and visuals on KICK-ASS with JRJR. I'll be doing interviews and having a Millar Hour as soon as I'm back too, but all looking very exciting. 2007 was a year of rest based on my big chunk of time out in 06, but 08 is looking pretty sweet. 1985, The Hitchy Project, The McNiven Project, Kick-Ass, a big project with Tony Harris, the Wanted movie and a superhero TV I'm working on with friends for the BBC amount to a nice big 12 months running from January until December.
Good times. And all the blanks filled in 16 days!

What a sad waste of McNiven's phenomenal talent.

Enemy of the State wasn't all that great, PARTICULARLY because Millar didn't really get Wolverine and wrote him like a pussy, but I'll give him a second chance because of McNiven.
At the very least, it'll sell like hotcakes. You can't blame marvel for picking this team.

I loved Enemy of the State. It was ten times better than whatever is on the books right now.

Millar's said he'd be returning to a book he'd written before, this'd fit the bill. I thought maybe he meant FF, since he'd done UFF already.

hm.
It's a god fit for millar, but honestly I think it might be a waste of McNivan's talents.

This kind of announcement isn't the sort of thing that Quesada would bury in the middle of a Cup O' Joe, so I think it's safe this one's a mistake.

Well, in the video interview on the Wizard site, Millar says the McNiven project is starting up in April. Does that synch up with the ends of any other Wolverine runs we know of?

Man, I hope that doesn't mean McNiven won't be on Spidey for long.

mcniven has been working on spiderman since cw ended. i could see him being able to get a few arcs in on it, before moving on to another book.

you know, McNiven really only has to draw 8 issues of Amazing a year at the very most.
Its not impossible that he could juggle these books.

stupid math.
ok, nine at the most. Somehow though, I think Jimnez and Larocca are going to handle alot more of the art chores than McNiven.

Larocca is probably only on for an arc, he's expected to return to newuniversal.
I think that every artist is only on for a single arc.

I would hope with the Jimnez hooplah that he's on for at least a few more issues. And Larocca is a work horse. He can do two comics at once. With Billy Tan coming back to X-men he could do 12 issues of newuniversal and 9-12 issues of Amazing.
John Romita JR is probably going to become a regular. And it would seem wasteful if Bagley didn't draw at least an issue here or there. Also Leonard Kirk. I would love to see him draw a few issues.
This really opens up Amazing as a book where lots of artists can draw one or two issue arcs between gigs.

how is this a sad waste of mcniven's talent?
there's not one thing been revealed about the project yet. it could be "the new watchmen" for all we know. be cautiously optimistic, man.

i dunno. Wolverine usually breaks down to blood, slicing, a yellow and blue suit, and sometimes ninjas. I mean it works for the character, but when I see these artists with beautiful styles like McNiven and Bianchi on Wolverine it seems a bit wasteful when there are many better suited artists for the type of story Wolverine usually has.

LOL!
If this is true, it will be literally the first time I will buy Wolverine since those first few issues, back in the day, when Jessica Drew shared some adventures with him in Madripoor.
Millar and McNiven in Wolverine is absolutely kickass.
And McNiven in this title is not a waste at all, Wolverine is the only "modern" superhero to have achieved true iconic status, this team will most likely catapult the book back to # 1, which in turn will continue raising McNiven's profile as the superstar he is...

Why do people think McNiven's talent would be wasted on Wolverine? McNiven draws superhero books. I don't get it.

Exactly.
Besides, I think his talents and style fits better with Wolverine-style mayhem and Millar's kickass action than with the "retro fun" that ASM will soon become...

I guess because it's cool to hate on him. I for one would be all over this, even though I didn't love what Millar did the first time around.

Because some readers hate Wolverine, they want the character dead. To have McNiven on a book they have no intention of reading is a waste of his talents, in their opinion.
Ugh. Can't fans ever be happy? When writers focus on Wolverine's character, readers complain that there's not enough action. When writers focus on the action, readers complain that Wolverine is flat and one-dimensional. Buncha bloody whiners....
IF this rumor is true, I'm thrilled. Met McNiven in Philly, and he's a really nice guy. Would love to see him on a Wolverine book - his work on CW was amazing. And Millar - well, I happened to love EotS and I think he did a great job of getting into Wolverine's head, which is what I like most about Wolverine stories - what's really going on in that peabrain of his.
But I doubt this is true. Such news would be all over the net...so, unless it's some sort of 'surprise', I don't see it happening. If it does though, I'll be happier than a pig in poo....

I honestly can't think of a Wolverine story in the past several years that delved into his character.

The reaction to Jeph Loeb's run has united fans in ways I haven't seen in a long time.
I loved Loeb's run. Even if I had a few problems with the plot, it wasn't enough to hurt the story for me. The most important thing was how he portrayed Wolverine - I liked it, he didn't just make him some berserker moron. I hate how people turn on the character just because they didn't care for the plot. Loeb did a find job at fleshing out Wolverine's character, in my humble...he showed Logan's arrogance when diddlin' Silver Fox in front of Creed. He showed his tenderness in handling Feral's body. He showed his patience and control in how he finally took down Creed. He showed Logan's regret in not killing the guy earlier in his life. He showed his frustration over dreams he couldn't explain, and sleepless nights. He exposed Logan's feelings for 'Ro (as if we didn't know, but still). There was his skeptism and anger over the lupus sapien' idea, his disbelief in getting owned by Wild Child, and his rather amusing observation about Summers.
This book really fleshed him out, and since I read for CHARACTER, the plot simply becomes the device, and not the PURPOSE of the story. I've read a couple Wolverine stories with GREAT plots, but the character development is so damn sucky I quickly forget the story.
So - Loeb may have delivered a disappointing plot for some, but he showed how that plot affected the character, which - like I said - is more important to me than the story itself.

fucking vey.
Whats with all this backlash to my one comment. McNiven is brilliant, but I'd much rather see him on something like Amazing Spider-man or Iron Man than Wolverine. NOT because I hate Wolverine, but because when wolverine is going on some sort of big superhero mission in his bright yellow and blue tights, it makes me cringe a little on the inside. I prefer my Wolverine in plaincolthes. McNiven excels in high superheroics like NA and CW, and if he's drawing Wolverine I'm sure it will be brilliantly illustrated high superheroics. But high superheroics starring Wolverine always feel a little forced to me.
So yes, that is my initial reaction based on an unofficial confirmation which may be a typo.

Um, in what universe was this the case? He wrote Wolverine like Clint Eastwood if his nuts were the size of bowling balls.
"A human juke-box? That supposed to be intimidating? What's the other one do - break dance?"
SNIKT.

It stars Wolverine.

Yeah, he lost that fight, too. That's the thing with Millar's Wolverine, he talked the talk, but couldn't walk the walk...even with more cybernetic implants than Steve Austin and an army of ninjas. The fact that he would even need cybernetic implants to take down street level B-listers like Elektra and Daredevil was bad enough, but the fact that he lost most of the time was even worse.

He's not a regular ASM artist. He just did the initial 3 issue arc to give it a 'big name' boost. He's been finished with ASM for a while.
