I'm plotting my way back home from VA to ND and the most direct route takes me on I-90 right through the heart of Chicago. Now, I'll probably be on this road on Saturday around noon give or take an hour. Will traffic be a nightmare or is it not that bad?
We're totally going to be passing each other.

It is always a nightmare near and around downtown. It might not be too bad since it is kinda early in the day.

There has got to be a circumferential highway around Chicago. It can't possibly be the only large city in America without one, can it?

Yeah, there's 294 but there are a lot of tolls and they are 80 cents if you don't have I pass.

I have a theory that Chicago traffic always sucks, I base this on the constant construction.

There is talk of a crosstown expressway.....but that is years away. There is too much land that the city/state would need to purchase or acquire by eminent domain. Right now one of the options is obtaining land from the railway that runs parallel to Cicero Ave. to connect Kennedy Expwy. (I-90) to the Stevenson Expwy. (I-55).

Your theory is correct. I think they have to justify their jobs and taxes by constantly doing construction.
Some of it has been helpful tough. I totally dig the Open Road Tolling and they added lanes coming in from Indiana which helps me a lot.

Speaking of which, what are tolls this year? I'll be shooting up 55 all the way to the con.
no tolls on 55. The Stevenson (I-55) is an expressway not a tollway. :D

The convention center is literally right off I-294. Take I-55 to I-294 Northbound. I know there is at least one toll between there, and maybe even two (they've changed it around over the past few years, to justify spending money on construction of course!) It's a pretty easy ride and really easy to find. Just look for the watertower painted like a rose!
Good luck

I have direction, however last year I was,'t prepared for the "exact change" toll station I had to blow through then send a check to later.

Yeah, don't go through the I-pass lane. Just go up to the toll booth's (there's always at least a few open) and pay with whatever you have. The can change anything for from a twenty on down. Sucks though cuz you have to pay twice as much for not having an I-pass

Thanks. I lurked here for years, but was just too lazy to post...
I think there are 2 toll plazas. One is at Cermak, without I-Pass it is $0.80. The other I think is at River Road, but I'm not sure if it is a full toll or if it will only be $0.30.

The river road one was the one that didn't have anyone working.

Yeah, I think you're right. I think it's an automated one only. You're kinda screwed on that one. Sorry.
