Wow, a reference to Peter's book. That is so weird.
And more tying together with Mighty Avengers.

What book is that?I believe it was called Webs. It was a collection of all this Spider-Man photos. The tour was during the McFarlane era. Maybe early 300s of ASM.

Ooo, yea, that! Bendis is the master of obscure Spidey continuity!
I think Dan Slott dropped a reference to it in a She-Hulk issue a few years back.

He appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson on that tour... perhaps not the best continuity to reference if Peter's not supposed to be over 30... :D

It was a book called Webs, which Peter published in...the late eighties, I think it was? Anyway, yeah. It was like a collection of Peter's Spider-Man photos for the Bugle. I believe it was mentioned in Spider-Man/Human Torch. Peter toured around the country to promote the book and stuff.
And yes, it's something that has been almost completely forgotten or ignored by pretty much everyone at Marvel.

Sort of. For every reference to Peter's book and Norman Osborn killing baby May, there is Peter saying he doesn't have a driver's license when he drove during the Clone Saga and was shown to own a car during JMS' run. :)

Yes, this is very true. BUT...not sure she'd 'feel' that knock unless he really pounded the door, OR if she was facing the door, and saw it vibrate as he knocked. These guys gotta watch what they do with Echo. Hearing-impaired people usually have a door 'bell' that flickers a light on and off because they CAN'T hear the knock, and because the vibration isn't strong enough to feel.
I'll give Bendis & Yu the benefit of the doubt here...maybe she was looking at the door and saw a shadow underneath it, or like I said, saw the door vibrate from the knock. Otherwise, they're really stretching it with her abilities.

Well, not necessarily. Though I don't think anyone realistically expected Tony to be harmed during the fight with Ultron, the fact that they didn't mention it in the broadcast isn't really indicative of anything. For one thing, it's entirely possible (and actually very likely) that SHIELD didn't inform them in regard to Tony's status.

You can't rent if you don't have a license, either. And in the JMS issue, he said it was his car, as evidenced by mountains of crap he had in the back.
It's not really a big deal. I'm far from being a continuity nut or anything, these things don't really bother me. Just saying that one time, one story said such and such.
I wonder if there's a spoiler in the missing page.

Echo's got enhanced senses. In her debut arc, she could distinguish Kingpin's clapping from the rest of the applauding crowd in an auditorium. It's little goofy, but it's been established...
And man, the series is great. It feels like so much is going on, and Yu's art is getting sharper and sharper.

Yeah, I get the enhanced senses, but it's still a bit of a stretch...even the hand clap would be a stretch because you have to ask how she can distinguish it? From vibrations? If so, then that's fine. But...well...there's this fine line between FEELING vibrations, and HEARING them. What is she feeling the vibrations with? Not her eardrums. From air movement? Floor vibrations?
So, the door knock - well, she either had to see it, or feel it through the floor. I can buy it - for now. But they risk making her just like a hearing person, when really they should (IMHO) make her someone that a hearing-impaired person CAN relate to...which they are at risk of failing to do.

It's not really something that is explicitly established, though. I mean, yeah, it's a conclusion that you can arrive to if you want to, I guess, going by that scene but she doesn't really say that her senses are enhanced or anything, just that she likes to stand in front crowds and the Kingpin's claps are easier to distinguish because he claps harder than everyone else.

You know what I want to see, though, is scenes where Spidey and/or Ronin start talking and then Maya cuts them off and says something completely unrelated because she didn't know they were talking because those pricks like to walk around with their masks over their faces all the time, and it gets all awkward and stuff. That would rule.

Thing is, they need to establish how deaf she is - kinda like they need to establish how fast Wolverine can heal, or whether or not Cyclops beams can actually burn (some say yes, some no). I have a deaf friend, and if she turns her hearing aid WAY up, she can make out some faint sounds. Once, while we were eating dinner, she had her hearing aid turned up, and she bit into a stalk of celery, and scared herself! LOL! She was so shocked that celery made noise when you bite into it. Even my friends who are profoundly deaf can make out some faint sounds under the right conditions, and with the help of a hearing aid.
Hmmmm...just wondering, does Echo use a hearing aid?

Yes! Totally agree! Could make for some awkwardly funny moments. That would also help develop her character a bit more - distinctive quirks and stuff are what help readers connect to a character.
And yeah - the Skrull thing is a possibility. I hope not...but...yeah, might be the case.

Hmmmm...I don't know, but I don't think so. I think she is completely deaf, as a big part of her first appearance was spent showing the world from her perspective, asking what things made sounds and things like that, and she's mentioned that the sound dimension is completely alien to her, and she imagines that a hearing perspective must be as extensive and detailed as sight.
Also, I think she thinks fire makes a sound. I don't know why, but I think that's kinda cool.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Marvel science, I suppose. :)
Not that it makes much sense, but if they establish that, while being deaf, she can tell one kind of applause from another, I have no problem following them to the point where she can sense a knock on the door. It's no worse than "Spider Sense" or "focusing your chi into a fist" or the guy who was dead a few months ago.

There was a scene in the first Ronin arc where someone asked her who she was, and (she was either facing the other way or the person had a mask on- I can't remember which) so she didn't answer. Close to what you want, I think. :)

No need for the vibration explanation. Keep it simple. Just imagine a panel between the knock and her reaction where she saw Wolverine look first. No-prize.

I seriously don't think Maya is a Skrull. I mean, that would be so freaking...well, it'd be kind of anticlimactic, to say the least. She appeared n three issues of New Avengers, then disappeared for over a year only to be killed and brought back as a Hand zombie thing after she finally reappeared, and then on top of that it'll turn out that she's a Skrull?
Really, I just don't see it. I think if anyone's safe, it's her. Of course, it could just be that I seriously want her to be a part of the New Avengers, and that I'd like to have more women on the team in general.

Yeah, me too. I loved the Daredevil/Echo Vision Quest arc - it's the only thing I've read with Echo in it - and I think Mack did an excellent job at conveying how a hearing impaired person responds to things. Actually, after reading that, I'd love to see Mack do another Echo story...he really made me feel for the character.
Anyway, having read that story and really liking it, I'd like to see her stay on the team and become SOMETHING....I mean, she is much more interesting to me than Spider-Boobies. I mean...Woman. I wouldn't mind seeing her hook up with Wolverine, too...I liked their chemistry in DD/E:VQ, and since they've both been done dirty by the Hand, I think there'd be some kind of connection there. I don't know. Luke thinks so, of course (liked seeing Peter standing up from himself there; Bendis likes to write scenes where people are just scared shitless of Luke, but I liked seeing Peter not willing to take any crap in the preview), but I don't know if it's ever been stated that the New Avengers have a Skrull among them.
We did know that they would have a traitor, of course, which turned out to be Jessica (seriously, the New Avengers are probably going to be fucking pissed at her the next time they see her). I think it's also worth mentioning that even though they're not Avengers officially, Wong, Jessica or the baby turning out to be Skrulls would be seriously dangerous for the team all the same. So maybe it's one of them.

You should read her first appearance, the Parts of a Hole arc also written by Mack and penciled by Quesada. Mack delves deeper into Echo's perspective as a deaf person there, and it's pretty cool. It's got nice scenes of Echo as a little girl asking her dad what kind of sound something would make, and if people smiling makes sounds and things like that. It's kinda nice.

Thanks for the tip. I really WANT to read this stuff - would like to get into Daredevil too...BUT....I have....lemme see....about 150 mini-arcs/comic books yet to read (back issues - mostly you-know-who and X-Men), 4 Iron Man trades, Top Cow crossover trade, and....some other stuff. The panel is unclear, but maybe she's reacting to everyone's reactions?
I don't know why should couldn't have just felt the vibrations from a loud knock.

I wonder if Echo will get a costume of sorts to do her New Avenger-ing. Beyond the hand stain thing on her face and feathers over her ear thing, I mean.

Speaking of the hand-thing... Where the hell has it been since new avengers 027? Is it something she can take off? :-?

Yeah, but he backed the syndicates, it's the American Way.

I always thought the hand thing was face-paint.

I doubt he is, but I like that he's being played as a not very good leader.

I wouldn't really say that he's being played as "not very good", just unexperienced and a bit emotional, which seems fitting to me.

Well yeah, it's a lack of experience and the fact he seems to work from the heart more than the head. But it still makes him not very good at this moment :)

I think Dan Slott dropped a reference to it in a She-Hulk issue a few years back.

Oooo, I see, so you're saying that Bendis ripped off YOUR idea, eh?

Man, as much as I feel this book has a tendency to spin its wheels, I absolutely love reading the character interactions Bendis writes. Funny, full of character dynamics and tension, and the best Spider-man dialogue anywhere.

Oh yeah, Echo is a big ol' Skrull.
My money in on Dr. Strange as the one character that has been a little bit off. For Echo to also be a Skrull right along with Elektra might be too much. As rocky as things are for the New Avengers, I would fear that if they see one more ting that hits too close to home they might just fold and call it quits. End of series. I figure that whatever the Hood has running with distract them long enough. Like they said, they need some bad guys to hit. Wonder if or rather when the bad guys are going to have a New Avengers #31 moment within their normally credible peer group...

Yu's art looks pretty sharp there.
I think his art on NA is the best of his career and very appropriate of the tone of the story.

Hawkeye gave about twice as much crap as he got bac in the day though. And as we see now, Cap's special attention during training paid off for more than a few Avengers.

I don't know why should couldn't have just felt the vibrations from a loud knock.
To me Wolverine was illustrated to be tensed up and facing the door when the action was elsewhere with the other New Avengers who were likely being loud. That body language is something Echo would have picked up on and also looked away from the action and towards what Wolverine was looking at.

When you start thinking that way, the Skrulls win.
