View Full Version : Should Comic-Con be split in two?

I heard this question posed during G4's "less-horrible-than-last-year-but-still-pretty-bad" coverage. I guess the idea would be to split it into a GEEK-CON and an (actual) COMIC-CON. Or as I like to think of it "Geek-Con" and "This shit's been cool for years but it took a bunch of Hollywood movies for you to realize how bad-ass our art-form is"-Con (aka Comic-Con)
Your thoughts?

umm.... how? what? no. I don't understand. how would that possibly work?
No, I think they're managing it fine. Except for the impossibility of getting into some of the TV panels (Heroes, BSG, Futurama), things were fine. It wasn't TOO crowded on the peak days, and very few normal panels were closed due to capacity.

In theory I would like this to happen. It would be nice to have Comic-Con be about comics again.
When ABC Family and sketch comedy TV shows have significant presences at the Con, I start to wonder how far from comic books this is going to go.

There was more comics to buy, comics to see, comics programming, comic publishers, etc. than most major comics-only conventions. It IS about comics.

Sorry Mr. Comic-Con. I didn't know this was your passion.
A portion of it is about comics, but people have been saying it for years that Hollywood has been moving in.

No. Despite the large and flashy booths that Hollywood takes up, there's more comics publishers and creators here than any other show. If you take the time to read the exhibitors list and the programming guide, you'll see what I'm talking about.

And I guess I have to repeat myself because you chose to respond with soem nonsense "I didn't know you liked Comic-Con" comment:

No I like everything in one spot.
My only complaint is that I miss a lot of programming because I have to camp out in Hall H or Ballroom 20 for 4 hours to see something I really want to see like Heroes or Iron Man because of this I miss some signings and panels of the comic book thing.
Maybe what would be cool since there isn't a ton of evening programming is to tape the panels of the various major events in Hall H and Ballroom 20 and then replay them throughbout that evening this way if I miss something I can always catch it later.
I'm also thinking that the SDCC is going to have to leave San Diego it's getting too big. This year, selling out each day... trying to walk the floor and get in Hall Ha nd Ballroom 20 panels was near impossible because of the amount of people there.
I think the Anaheim Convention center (right across the street from Disneyland) is much better. It might not be prettier or near the ocean, but Anaheim Convention center is about 1.2 Million square feet compared to SDCC which comes in around 450,000 sq feet.

P.Or if they actually WENT to the show. It seems like a lot of people just look at everyone's photo reports, see a bunch of photos of celebrities and costumes, and think that's all it is. Like I said in another thread, no one is going around taking photos of all the comic dealers and comic book panel discussions.

By the way, the city extended their deal with Comic-Con up to at least 2013.

If you had just made the passion comment, it would've been clear to me that you were being jokey. I was saying that it IS about comics b/c it has more comic stuff than any other convention, despite all the ADDITIONAL material that's there. And you're response was "People have been saying that Hollywood's taken over." That had nothing to do with my point. You just made the original point again. I'm not saying it's NOT about comics. I was there just like last year and the last half dozen of years or so. I think I've been going every year since 2000.
I had a blast at the Quick Draw panel and at Scott Shaw's Oddball Comics panel. I know there's still stuff for comics and that if you took out all the Hollywood stuff, it would STILL be the biggest comics convention.
But when I saw an ABC Family booth and hear that the Sarah Silverman show has a panel, I had to chuckle because I couldn't for the life of me figure out what those have to do with comics.
That's really all I was saying. Would I actually in reality want the two split? Probably not because part of the fun is the huge spectacle of it.

Probably not because part of the fun is the huge spectacle of it.When I was in Vegas last fall, they had a big dentist convention in Mandalay Bay. We walked around the common areas and looked at all the big advertisements and signs and stuff. It was trippy.
But their keynote speaker was a Las Vegas magician. Do you think the dentists complained that the magician wasn't dental enough? Or did they just have fun b/c statistically most dentists love magicians?
Same is true for Comic-Con. Most comic fans love the Sarah Silverman show and comedy in general. Add in the fact that one of the cast members writes comics, and there's really no reason not to have that panel.

I know I'm sounding like a broken record at this point, but Comic-Con really does need to do something about the sorry state of Artist Alley. They're cutting it almost in half every year, and I've heard from a fairly reliable source that they've considered cutting it completely. If they're loosing money because of it, I'd much rather see them charge for table space than continue to make cuts. Most of my greatest memories of Comic-Con come from me being able to chat with my favorite creators in Artist Alley. Marvel/DC booth signings are mostly useless because of the chaos and fast moving lines. I'd really be a tragedy to see Artist Alley come to an end.

I never really thought they would split it, I just wanted an excuse to type "This shit's been cool for years but it took a bunch of Hollywood movies for you to realize how bad-ass our art-form is"-Con (aka Comic-Con).
I wish our beloved medium would get the respect it deserves, we have awesome books by awesome creators!
Okay Mr. Smarty Pants. Then explain the ABC Family booth! They do still play old Marvel cartoons on that channel, right? If not, that Kyle XY show is supposed to be scifi. That's close enough.
EITHER WAY, it's ONE BOOTH and cannot be used as proof alone that Hollywood has taken over.

That would be awful.
Another thing I would like see changed is the weird alternate numbering of small press sections. Everything else is in aisles/rows of 1000s and it becomes pretty intuitive fairly quickly, but they have weird letter-number or letter-letter-number set-ups that have no relation to the rest of the floor's set up. It always takes me forever to find them (even though I'm sure they're in the same spot every year - but I'm stupid).
I was meeting up with someone at I-8 and neither of us had any idea where that was. It's not like it's no biggie when you find out you're on the opposite side of the floor because you accidentally went to II-8.

No it's too late. Infection is complete.
Actually, a friend that I was with said they have a cartoon coming out soon. But it just struck me as funny to see the big ABC Family logo on top of a booth. Personally, I'm looking forward to the Better Homes & Garden booth next year.

It's a demographic thing. People who will be at Comic-Con are people ABC Family want to target. If you think about it, "Veronica Mars" really doesn't have anything to do with comics, but a lot of comic book fans liked it, so they had a presence there while the show was on. This is the same thing.
