Spider-Man 4 Looking for a New Writer
Source: Empire
July 30, 2007

Back in January, we broke the news that David Koepp, screenwriter of the first Spider-Man, was in talks to pen the fourth installment, but now Sam Raimi tells Empire they are still searching for a writer.

"I want to help contribute to the production," he said. "I don't know if I'll just be a producer on it but if I can work with the writer in such a way so that directing would be right for me, I don't know. We've had our first meeting on Spider-Man 4 and we're looking for the writer."

Will he come back as the director? Hopefully we'll find out soon.

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand I think Raimi made a great trilogy and him staying involved assures continued quality.

On the other hand I want to see another R rated Raimi flick before I die...

21 and I'm being somewhat facetious. He's just been in spider-man land for 7 years now.

If Raimi makes another R-rated movie, I sincerely hope its not a Spidey film.

Get the fucking producers away from him if he's directing!!

And I LIKED Spidey 3.

I saw Spidey 3 for the first time yesterday. I liked it. Acts 1 and 2 in particular were really good.

I felt like Venom got forced into this movie. All the stuff with Harry, Marko, Peter, and MJ was great. Liked it alot. The whole Venom storyline felt really forced.

If I remember correctly, Venom AND Gwen were forced into the movie. It was originally going to be GG2 and Sandman.

What made me angry about Spidey 3 is that it REALLY started out great. So I got all my hopes up. And then during the second half it just kinda went to shit on me.

I thought Spider-Man 1 and Spider-Man 2 were entertaining, but had a shitload of problems. The first half of Spidey 3 seemed to lack some of those, which was nice. But then it supplanted those problems with other problems and ARGH GOD WHY DID VENOM HAVE TO BE IN THE MOVIE.

I'd be unhappy about an R-rated Spidey 4.
But I'm down with Rami coming back.

I just watched Spidey 3 for the second time.
This is by far the best of the trilogy.
I just don't get how anyone who likes spider-man can hate this movie...

This is kind of related to this, but I was wondering if anybody looked through the new Marvel Previews? In a solicitation for a Spider-Man book, it says something like "and introducing the new movie villain for Spider-Man 5...Menace" or something along those lines. Did I miss something?

It's a hype joke. They're saying that Menace is going to be so super awesome that they're going to want to put them in the movies straight away.

Thats strange. I had three customers ask me what the hell was going on. Thanks.

I still think Venom should have been a lead into 4 but they had to be all like 'this is a trilogy because of our contracts so things have to be wrapped up'

Yep. They should have left him as a cliff-hanger, and just done the GG2/Sandman thing for 3.

And so what if everybody involved was only involved for three movies? There are more possible actors and directors out there for Spider-Man than just Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and Sam Raimi.

You'd have THIS trilogy, and then you could have another trilogy with a whole different creative team. Not really that hard.

I'd be unhappy about an R-rated Spidey 4.

See, this is a mindset that I just can't understand.

An R-Rated "Maximum Carnage" film adaptation would be awesome, and I don't care what anyone says. :)

Yeah, that would've been much better, even if Spider-Man 4 never came to surface. Raimi should have used The Vulture or whomever he originally wanted.

I didn't hate it, but there were problems.

1. Too many coincidences.
The alien blob happens to fall near Peter Parker, and chooses to follow him.
The guy who really killed his uncle escapes prison and gains superpowers in a horrific accident.
Peter gets rid of the costume in the same church where Eddie Brock goes to pray for his death, and Eddie learns his identity at that moment.

2. So many character moments seemed "off". Like Mary Jane never telling Peter that Harry threatened her life, leading to the breakup.

3. Continued the tradition of killing off promising villains, resulting in Venom appearing for all of fifteen minutes.

4. Struck me as a rushed movie, especially the first half.

In its defense, people who hate it can't seem to agree on what they dislike about it. It's just hilarious to read conflicting reviews on what worked and what didn't.

A little Venom goes a long way. He's a one-note villian who needs to die quickly before he wears out his welcome.

This complaint always bothered me. All of the Spider-Man movies have been built on coincidence. Like, the coincidence that Peter Parker would gain super powers just at the same time that his best friend's father gains super powers and goes crazy. Or the coincidence that Peter would be at Doc Ock's origin. Or the coincidence that the burglar who Peter let escape would kill Uncle Ben.

And the Church/Eddie Brock thing is lifted right out of the comic book.
