I'm not talking about that passive, indecissive shit where you say "I can't choose between..." When you think of your favorite band, the one that stands above all others in your mind, the first that pops into thought. You can do it.

I'd go with At the Drive-In. Such a revolutionary band. The entire Post-Hardcore landscape has influences and traces of these cats. The bands that spawned from them are also wonderful (The Mars Volta/Sparta). Lord knows it was between them, The Blood Brothers or Brand New.

If a single artist counts, then it's Elvis Costello. If you really meant band, The Clash.

Echo and the Bunnymen.

Dude, you sound like a radio with the speakers blown.
It's the kind of sound that you'll never know.
The treble high and the bass down low.

WOAHOH!!! WOAHOH!!!

If we aren't counting individual artists (Beck) then I'm going to have to go with the Dandy Warhols.

at least, that's my selection this week.

Okay, one overall band/artist/musical act. Overall musician or musical group. Just one. Should be interesting.

The Offspring.

Elvis Costello -- but I don't know with the Visa, Lexus, and iPhone commercials that he's endorsing. I'm sure it's for his kids' college fund, but shit, you'd think the royalties off "Pump It Up" alone with all the compilations and soundtracks it's on would be enough.

You don't have to defend it. You like who you like. No shame in it.

Hey, they used to kick ass.

Feel no shame.

Unless your favorite album of theirs is Conspiracy of One.

Then feel shame.

Oh, it's not so much defense, as me pointing out that I wasn't making a joke. And you knowing the type of music I normally and generally listen to, Garth is pretty fuckin left field.

That's not my favorite CD. That honor goes to Ignition. Lot's of great tracks of that CD, and I hold a special place in my heart for Americana. That album just hit me at the right time in my life.

Cool. However, it just seems like a bummer when people (not saying you, now) feel ashamed of their favorite music or feel as though they must defend it. Your taste is your own and you cannot change it. Be proud, peeps. Blast those iPod buds.

A lot of people seem to forget that a favorite band/album has a lot to do with the circumstances under which you first discovered them.

People look at me like I'm insane when they look in my 5-disc changer and see that I have (let's say) A Day To Remember, Journey, The Smiths, Jay-Z, and Garth fricken Brooks all in there at once. I like good music, genre be damned.

That's exactly how my mix CDs are.

On the one I was listening to today I had DMX, then Cyndi Lauper, then Eminem, then the Church, then the Bouncing Souls, and so forth.

There's a part of me that will always love this band for so many reasons.

None of which have anything to do with the Cuttlefish of Cthulhu.

Is that based purely on entertainment value? (Not attacking,) I just never saw him as being a great musician - just a great entertainer.

Yeah. I got someone who hates metal to start listening to them just by playing him the Joan videos.
