AUGUSTA, GA -- The latest food scare involves botulism, and a growing national recall of canned foods. Castleberry's Food is now recalling 90 types of canned meat products as well as four types of dog food.
The food could be tainted with botulism. Botulism has not been found in commercial canned foods since the 1970s.
The company thinks the problem came from under-processing at its Georgia plant. An investigation of Castleberry's Augusta plant by the USDA's food safety and inspection service, showed an equipment malfunction that could have caused the contamination may have existed longer than first thought.
Cans of chili sauce made by the company were found in the homes of four people who were hospitalized with botulism in Texas and Indiana.
Product brands in the recall include Castleberry's, Austex, Kroger, Food Lion, Lowe's, Piggly Wiggly and Natural Balance.
Consumers should return labels to the store where the product was purchased for refunds.
