View Full Version : BB Review Group Voting Thread for 7/25

Okay, since Thud is rarely online when the Midtown list goes up, he's asked me to handle the voting threads. This is not a coup d'etat. :D

Quick summary of what this thread is:

This thread is for everyone to determine what book we will review in the BB Review Thread. In the past we took turns picking a book but now we are openly voting for titles we would like to see reviewed. Everyone is welcome to participate, no need to ask.

After visiting the Midtown shipping list (or another one you prefer) and looking over the choices please nominate one book. At the end of the week (thread closes on Tuesday at 6pm CST) the title with the most votes wins. Feel free to lobby for your choice as much as you please :)

There are no restrictions on what you can nominate and vote. Any publisher (no matter how small) any price (singles, trades, hardcovers ect) and import titles are all fair game.

We will do a new thread every week to do these votes

Here's the list of what is shipping 7/25:

Time to pick next weeks book :)

I nominate Annihilation: Conquest - Starlord #1. Each of the minis have stood on their own to a certain degree so far, and this one in particular looks like a blast. It's the Dirty Dozen in space as Peter Quill assembles a ragtag group of convicts on a suicide mission, ranging from Rocket Raccoon and a talking tree to Captain Universe and former Avenger Mantis. Plus, it's written by original Annihilation scribe Keith Giffen! This can't miss! Rocket Raccoon! :D

At least one of the Ellis choices has to be picked!

Frankly, neither of those Ellis books sound very impressive.

Doktor Sleepless in particular evokes memories of Grant Morrison's The Filth. Don't know why, but I get a very iffy vibe from them.

Brandon Graham!

I loved 'Universe So Big'. I've only found 2 issues of it though, not sure if there were more. I keep looking whenever I dig for back issues.

I picked up Escilator and two of his porn books awhile ago too, he has a great style.

Benito Cereno recommended MULTIPLE WARHEADS a few months ago and that was when I heard about Brandon Graham first. Meanwhile I also saw "Kid Girl Khameleon" (http://reyyy.livejournal.com/12655.html) by his homey Corey Lewis. These are very talented guys. You're lucky to have easy access to back issues. My best bet is a re-list of KING CITY when the next volume comes out.

I haven't read Star-Lord of course, but he does appear in the original Annihilation. At this point Conquest has nothing to do with the old story, it involves two entirely different protagonists.

Could be some spoilers in Star-Lord though, who knows? Only baby Jesus.

Hrm. Many of the pics (like Ellis' books) I'll be waiting on the trade. But I don't mind picking up first issues just to dip my toe in the water. I'm really curious about the return of Rocket Racoon, also.

So, Starlord #1, for me.

Go with your number as you are the official vote thread counter. Sorry about that.

Iron Fist has been a great comic, but I think a new #1 from a small publisher would be an interesting selection, especially since Ellis is writing.

What is Docktor Sleepless about?

From an interview with Warren Ellis here: http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=109981

"Doktor Sleepless is a Mad Scientist. Doktor Sleepless has returned to the city of his birth, co-opted a pirate radio frequency, and is broadcasting long, strange and nonsensical monologues across the city at night. Doktor Sleepless, accompanied by an unknown and mildly frightening Nurse, is walking around the city. Doktor Sleepless is Up To Stuff."

What is Docktor Sleepless about?

NRAMA: Who is Doktor Sleepless?

WE: That's the question. Doktor Sleepless is a Mad Scientist. Doktor Sleepless has returned to the city of his birth, co-opted a pirate radio frequency, and is broadcasting long, strange and nonsensical monologues across the city at night. Doktor Sleepless, accompanied by an unknown and mildly frightening Nurse, is walking around the city. Doktor Sleepless is Up To Stuff. But, really, he's a cartoon. Who fears a cartoon Mad Scientist who jabbers amusing gibberish over the radio at night, speaking to the grinder subculture of body-modifiers and disappointed freaks who make up the city's under-classes?

Who's afraid of Doktor Sleepless?

Well. Perhaps more people should be. He's also John Reinhardt, a technologist with a tragic, haunted past who couldn't get anyone to listen to him three years ago? And why would they? A rich kid with a barrel full of patents who lived in a huge house in the hills overlooking the city, just about as privileged as you can get in the Western world. So he went away, to learn things, leaving his girlfriend Sing to try and hold the counterculture scene in the city together. And he came back as someone people would listen to. Doktor Sleepless, a living fictional character, funny and unthreatening. Because that way he could do what he liked.

And perhaps we should be afraid of people who do as they like. Because they tend not to worry about who gets hurt.
