This was actually a little cartoon a friend of mine did for me inspired by all those crazy Greg Horn "She-Hulk" covers and of course Dan Slott's amazing writing. It may not be as impressive as the previous posteres artwork, but it's funny and gets its point across. So enjoy:

PS: I retract all previous posts involving Greg Horn and Barbies. And in a completely unrelated matter, Greg make the check out to CASH. kiddin'

yeah, those are pretty cool JoJo! I especially like the last one-- everything comes together best on that one out of the three. What program are you using? Poser? I had sworn off 3D rendering after Elektra #5 (which was about 5 years ago!), but I recently used Poser to complete a very difficult G.I. Joe cover--it had about 12 Cobra guys running around on it and 3 Joes. I can't post it yet because it's a top secret kind of thingee, but I will eventually. It's the 1st time I've ever used poser on one of my paintings.

Ha! i like how they are all trying to cram into that little table. that would be one heck of an awkward double date.

it sure is poser I have 5,6 & 7 although I tend not to use 7 unless I really need to it`s a very buggy program that has a habit of closing for no reason and a nice big list of other problems lol.
The program itself has improved greatly and so have some of the new models. Hopefully they`ll get poser 7 fixed as it has some great features. :D

Very cool Scott! I also like the fact that you are exploring a few different styles. The first piece of art looks like a digital painting but it still retains a nice "human" quality of roughness to it... and the subsequent ones almost have the effect of a cell-shaded japanese cartoon. The third one is cool too with the low saturation coloring which is not easy to master. Considering you are such a young buck, I'd say there is a LOT of potential here. Are you going to an art school? you will learn a lot there trust me.

Thanks Greg,

I am going to school for animation. It centers itself on a lot of life drawing which is a real bonus. I was lucky enough to get accepted as it is one of the top two schools in North America.

Thank you for the kind comments, I'm one of those artists that doesn't want to stick to one thing, I want to do it all: Animation, Comic Books, Illustration, and french illustrator, Claire Wendling.

I draw inspiration from everywhere, japanese animation, painters, comic book illustrators, and for the painting, I specifically looked at the She-Hulk Cover with Wolverine and the snowbeast on it, the overall tone you set with the blue tint really made it pop.

It's also VERY nice that I get some confirmation from someone like you concerning my talent and my potential. AND I can say that low saturation is NOT very easy at all, and often needs colors changed in the end.

Thanks again, and keep up the great work! (What series are you on for covers next?)

LOL yeah. Thanx!!!!! The screaming lady is Phoenix from X3. Thats awesome you can tell Rose McGowan is the Grindhouse girl! I remember you saw my Charmed sketch & knew who she was but couldnt think of the show's name cuz you're always drawing purty piktures hahahaha. The re-make of birth of venus was all done digitally. Im not too proud of it but everyone else likes it. Phoenix is oil pastels. Rose from Grindhouse took forever to draw before adding the oil paints. Both were done on 30x40 illustration boards. Right now Im playing around w/ digital art. One thing I love about digital is its FAR LESS MESSY. I'll post my digital works when Im proud of them. Love my wacom but I still should have gotten the medium size like you said LOL.

Hey David, I see a lot of potential with your drawing. Your anatomy needs a little working on, but that is something you get better with from experience. For purposes of presentation, I'd go back into your black areas and shade them as smooth as possible--it will give a great look to the overall art. Use one of those blending stump thingees afterwards to get it super-smooth (I use that on all my originals). Your attention to detail on the armor is very cool--keep that up!
Nice. Has a little bit of style from European graphic artists.

Thanks Greg....yeah..actually going back to fix those problems. The shading in the background was kinda last minute thing...and I used one of those 2mm lead holder pencil for the first time and a LOW quality paper. I learned from that mistake !!! This was one of those pics that Scottie asked me...can you hammer out a pic of Talon in a couple of hours? I'll re-post it as soon as I get it done...thanks so much you guys!

Storey
02-28-2008, 07:14 PM
HA ! .... No.... The girl with the knife is one of my most recent ones....(Greg Horn inspired) It's for a graphic novel that I wrote and am currently working on. I had the idea for it many years ago but I kept putting it off because I knew how big of a project it would be...... I have been working on it for a couple of years now in my spare time.....It's going to be a few years before it's finished. I don't know what I am going to do with it when I am finished but I think the fun is in the doing anyway. That particular one is all digital but most are a mixture of both.
You have been a huge inspiration to me ! ! And I know you have heard me say this probably way too often but your work is AMAZING ! ! ! ! ! ! And I always look forward to seeing new Greg Horn art ! ! ! And I have way too many favorites to mention !

Hi MissJaque! Welcome to our happy board! now let the ripping and shreading of your artwork commence....nyahhhhahahahaha

Actually it would be hard to rip this art because it is so good. Your anatomy is very accurate and the body language is realistic in the way that she is graceful holding that rope. The composition is okay--I think she needs to be centered just to get a better balance--it is currently heavy on the left side. I'd say the best aspect of your painting is the way you handled the effects and lighting issues. The blue tint on everythng is a nice subtle touch and i like the fact that the plant life is see-through. The rust texture on the anchor is cool too. The shadows are REALLY good (all the elements are seperated well) The transition from her waist to the fish parts could be better, but that was the hardest part of the painting i bet.

MissJaque
03-11-2008, 03:56 PM
It was the hardest part of the painting!!! I spent so much time trying to get it right. I got it to a point where I was pretty pleased with the transition, and I decided to call it there. Those dolphins are actually the first dolphins I've drawn since middle school! I was thinking that there was a lot of empty space in the upper right, so I see exactly what you're saying on the composition. The bottom left is so much heavier than the upper right. Balance is something I have been trying to work on, so hopefully my next post will be better. I'll certainly try and put your comments to use.

Hopefully, I'll be able to give you so little to tear apart each time! Haha! Thanks so much for the critique.

And Intercept789, I agree. Who doesn't love a good mermaid?

Horn
03-11-2008, 05:50 PM
One more thing! If you weaken the line that makes her upper lip, that will make a big difference on her face. Its a little subtle trick that artists use to keep the upper lip feminine. If you go too heavy it tends to look like a mustache! Make that line thinner.

MissJaque
03-28-2008, 01:18 PM
Thanks for the advice. I'll have more art to show off soon, I hope. Thin that line on the upper lip...that's such a good idea! It never occurred to me.

Anyway, thanks for posting your stuff. i'd say you are headed in the right direction anatomy wise--you've got a good understanding of posing. I think your next step is to tighten up the line work and get things looking cleaner overall. It's a bit rough, but then again rough is not necessarily bad! One of my favorite artists ever was David Mazzuchelli!

Hi Steven,
This is your best work to date! The next step for you is associated with Arion's comment. The shaded areas are looking a little dull (like the shadows on emma's face for instance). When you are coloring over pencils, you need to inject a secondary color into your shading areas so they will be vibrant compared to your medium - light areas.. if you are coloring on computer, it is not too hard to experiment and i find what works best for you. You can try adding a color layer over your art and gently brush in colors into the shaded areas. try different reds and oranges until you find one that works. if you get something that is close, you can try using opacity to get it just right or hue saturation to punch up or down the color. I think you should practice on the Emma Frost because your shading is better on her face and she will have the best potential for you.

Thanx guy!!! Im sure I'll get around to touching them up soon. I used this photo of Natasha Henstridge as a reference more than my original drawing. My main concern was the lighting which I intend to practice on. You'll are right. The shading in her face is a little funky. I've also heard Wonder Womans knockers are too far apart. I say its her breastplate that shoves em.

Didn't want to mention it, but the wide canyon between her breasts says "fake implants." Natural breasts don't look that way.

Check out http://www.awfulplasticsurgery.com and read the comments to the pictures. That alone is quite helpful.

Did you make all of them? Because if you did, your ability to change styles or work with black & white is amazing. I'm still years if not decades away from something like that.

Hey Vlad, Great diversity on these pieces! I'm having a hard time deciding which I like best... I was going to ask you if you are a big John Buscema fan, but i see you gave him credit on the Loki drawing. John was the best at coming up with life-like dynamic poses. His characters were graceful, but still retained their power. One of my favorite artists of all time.

and when the Loki jam came I I just had to do a tribute to it.

Don't worry, you are not monopolizing anything. I'm sure Greg is happy with your posts. If you have any doubts, just ask him.

Those are nice. Did you use only your computer with the one in color? The black and white is quite good, feels like a horror movie but vivid at the same time.

Don't worry Vlad--that's what this thread is for! I'd say most everybody on this board is an art lover of some sort...and most are artists in their own right. You can post here everyday if you want--we will just simply enjoy it all (especially since it is good stuff). Imagine if you sucked ass! Anyway, The Witches Brew is really a cool piece. It has a lot depth considering there is no extreme foreground elements. Something about the central glow from the pot, and those gradations in the background make it work perfectly. I like the stark blacks too.

Hey Vlad--I just happen to be a big Sherlock Holmes geek. I read all the books by Arthur Conan Doyle in High school. And I've seen almost every episode with Jeremy Brett as the world's greatest consulting detective (The British television episodes I mean). Those top two shots are great likenesses of Brett--the one in the chair is not as good, but overall this is a great design. Watson up top is looking pretty accurate too, but i can't remember the actor's name.

Thanks Greg, I'm a huge fan of Holmes as well. The actor who played Watson is Edward Hardwicke. As for the chair illustration of Holmes, that is kind of interesting. The photo of Brett I used for that looked to me like it was based on an illustration by Sidney Paget who did the illustrations for the Strand magazine. It seemes like they really went out of their way to capture his feel and I kind of rolled with it.

Hi, Greg! I decided a few years back that I'm going to be "the Israeli Greg Horn", but it didn't quite work out. Things like lack of time, color blindness, almost no understanding of anatomy, ADD... My question to you: Am I any good at all? I mean, I know I have talent, but there are so many people out there, doing really amazing stuff, and I just don't feel I have anything unique of my own to offer. I'll always draw, because it's something I just have to do, but is there any point in trying to take this further?

Hi Yatz,
Welcome to the boards. Is your color blindness comment a joke? If so, you are funny. if not...well...so sorry.:-?
Anyway, I think you have talent, but still a ways to go on some elements of your art. You're doing a good job on the rendering of the anatomy--i mean getting a good three dimensionality to forms, but in some places the anatomy is off. it is a good idea to practice drawing from life, and i mean with an actual model for practice. You will 'see" things in real life that are just not understood from using a photo reference. Soon you will be very comfortable and you will know what to do with photo refs, and also coming up with stuff right out of your head. Your faces vary on the three drawings.. it seems like you have some different styles going on here like in the Red Sonya piece. If you are going to go realistic with the bodies, then i'd stick to a realistic face too. But you might end up eventually morphing everything into a realistic cartoon style anyway. It's art, so you can do whatever you want, you know?! I think your penciling style down at the bottom is headed in a nice direction, but again the body is realistic while the face seems less finished. Conceptually, the Hawkeye/Scarlet witch piece is a Tour De Force (wish i had though of it  )

Thanks, Greg. :D I think you gave me an idea for something I can start doing right now. I never went to art school or took any lessons, and everything I know is from comic books and studying photos. Evening model drawing class is something that is actually feasible for me (money and time-wise), and I'm getting on it.
I try to play with my style (mainly because I kinda hate my "line"), but I guess I should really start with the fundamentals (e.g., anatomy).

I do indeed have a rather rare, across-the-board color blindness. Never touched color until I discovered Photoshop and color sampling. It's no biggie, but it does cause the occasional fiasco, at both art and day job (I'm a food facilities designer, and I work a lot with CAD - including imaging) :-?.
