Alright, this is too creepy, Rob posted this on his board
So today I woke up to a friend of mine at Marvel alerting me too the fact that there was a "weird guy" as he put it calling editors at Marvel telling them that I was late on his commission.
My friend told me that he wanted to give me a head's up as to what this guy was doing, just wanted to watch my back. They thought the guy was creepy.
The guy's name was Will Torres. The same Torres who occasionally posts as Soulspawn here on my boards.
http://www.willardtorres.com/
Will had sent me a PM here last week asking about the status of his commission and had commented that he had read the commission post update I had as a sticky post since May 27th and he stated he was fine. Here it is...
"I know that you posted a message on your message board which is fine with me but I still do not know how soon will I see my cover from you."
First off, before I go further, I do not and cannot read every PM or thread or messsage on these boards. I just can't, I don't have time. So I read his PM yesterday, along with all the other pm's that had been stacking up. Then this morning I hear he's been calling Marvel comics about a commission that has absolutely nothing to do with them or their characters. Bad enough but then it gets better....
Turns out Torres has gotten my Mother's phone number and has called her inquiring as to when he will get his commission. Then I remember my Mom telling me about some fan who called her a few weeks back, she couldn't recall the name or what they wanted.
Mr. Torres got his commission in at the end of the line, the very last one. He sent payment in April as my PM to him on April 16th will confirm. I had not yet opened his package as this pm from me to Torres explains....
"just got home, got your package w/payment.
i'll look everything over tomorrow and get on it as soon as i finish the latest issue. should be about a week.
thanks!
rob"
Then shortly after that a friend died, me and my family took ill, things got behind, leading to me posting my Commission update thread a month later on May 27th.
Torres acknowledged that he read that thread. That's good because it was meant for him and the other six people waiting for their commissions ahead of him.
But Torres decided to get aggressive and contact my Mom and now Marvel.
This is beyond crossing the line. Especially after I had not received any inquiries from him over the past 2 months. What's the deal here I thought.
I confronted Mr. Torres today on his actions and I was hit with all his rationalizations. Truly I've never experienced anything like this guy.
All of you in line waiting longer for commissions than Torres stand up.....
Andy Prowant, Cylon, Jeremy, Jairmy...others....
Not a peep or a harassment out of any of you. I give a discounted price on commissions and I do my best to see that their professional quality and not shoddy attempts to cash in. This is my best guess as to why I get so many requests for commissions, because I put work into them and they please the customer. I haven't had a return or complaint yet.
Until Mr. Torres who now comes clean with a half dozen e-mails sent to this address..
thedarkness@optusnet.com.au
which is a former address of Adrian Nicita, the man responsible for creating these boards and my web site.
I have never received an e-mail at this address in my life. I understand now that Adrian failed to remove it when he set up my account and activated the boards. Honest mistake.
But here's the rub....I live on these boards as you all know. You don't think you're getting through to me and want to get my attention START A THREAD on the boards.....maybe " ROB CONTACT ME!" would be a good place to start. Keep me accountable but don't involve my extended family members. Especially my Mom who has nothing to do with my comics work.
Word to the wise-Don't call my Mom or bother Marvel comics about a matter that does not concern them.
These are moves that give fans a bad name and creepy association.
Many of you have purchased art and commissions from me and while I may be slow, I always come through.
Will Torres is an example of exactly what you don't act. I will no longer draw his wrap around cover, I won't associate with this guy again and with good reason. A line was crossed. Actions that were irrational and irresponsible were taken.
And get this, earlier today he asked me not to share this with anyone else, he didn't want this dispute made public.
The same way Torres refrained from harassing my Mother and one of my business associates?
I stretched myself thin to complete Torres request to do a sketch of his character at NYC con. I treated him with kindness and patience same as I would hope is afforded to me. Afterward he would ask to make that sketch a cover. Then he solicited it without my seeing or approving the colored version. How considerate of him. I kept quiet. Now I just can't.
I'm sharing this today because this incident has made me reconsider everything about conventions, commissions, pro-fan relations and I'm still a little freaked out.
Jude and others have warned me of stalkers and today I discovered one in my own back yard, in my own message board. Stalkers step over the line and believe me the line has been violated.
Check your facts. Check your info. Don't ever call someone's Mom about a drawing you've commissioned. That's freakin' flat out creepy as hell.
This entire incident has creeped me out....I'm going to take another shower.

If he was truly a Rob Liefeld fan, he would have realized he wasnt gonna get his commissioned drawing before 2009.
Edit: Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to think calling Marvel (who couldnt give two craps about your art piece, they want their Onslaught pages so it might actually ship) or his mom was a good idea.

on saturday, february 23, 2007 i finally had the opportunity to meet rob liefeld, one of the industrys leading comic book artist. rob has been a very big influence in my art and as a business person. i have followed his career since he first started working for marvel comics in the late 80's. since rob helped formed image comics it has always been a dream of mine to one day have rob illustrate my character "kill-borg". when i heard that rob was taking comission offers that day, i jumped to the chance. i paid rob what he was charging for his services and was told to come back to his table
later that evening. finally my dream was about to come true...
rob liefeld drawing kill-borg! Yes!! when i returned at around 8:00 p.m. that night i was able to see rob finish inking on the lineart. it was so cool just to see that moment. the fanboy in me was very happy. rob told me kill-borg was a cool character and that he really enjoyed drawing him. i was exstactic just to hear him say that. later, i ask rob if he would give me the honor of having his illustration of kill-borg put inside of a comic book i hope to see print in the future. rob gave me his blessings and he wished me well with my future endeavors.
this was a blessing for me as everything i wanted from attending this convention has happen and then some. this will be a moment i will never forget and will always remember.
a happy fanboy,

Unless either party is under the age of 13, calling someone's mother to get them to do something for you is lame. hunting down a famous person's mom's number to do it is both lame and creepy.

Whats up all! In my defense I called the 411 operator in Cali looking for Robs number so that I can speak with HIM not his mother. I was given a number after I gaved the operator his NAME and the ADDRESS Rob provided me. I never meant to speak to his mother and did not know the number given to me belonged to his mother. I apologized to Robs mother for calling that number and NEVER called that number afterwards. Rob is not mentioning that I tried e-mailing him repeatedly to a e-mail address on HIS profile in his message board forum. I even went as far as e-mailing his buddies but received no response from Rob. All I know is that if you pay someone $1,200 for a cover there should be a open line of communication. Rob and I e-mailed each other back and forth until I sent him the payment for the DOUBLE-COVER in question. After I paid him, all communication stopped on his part. I tried communicating with him via e-mails to a e-mail on his PROFILE on his message boards but received no response. Know he is telling me that the guy who build his website forgot to bring that e-mail address down. Was I told of that when we both started to corresponding each other? NOT AT ALL!! I apologize to both his mother and Rob for making that call but. I was not stalking Rob at all. I was reaching out to him because I had no response DIRECTLY from him pertaining my cover. Thats all. I called marvel because it was my last option that I had. i really felt I was beat for my money and I was not going to let that happen. This situation was not about stalking, but a communication breakdown on Robs behalf. I should not have to get my answer from a POST that he posted and just wait FOREVER to recieve a cover that I paid in FULL. I also did not know I was last in line on his commission list. Why did he not tell me all of this before I sent the $1,200 to him? Think about that for a moment. Basicly I was going to wait for when ever he decides to send me the cover. I did not know it was going to go down that way. Now he wants to paint me as a "deranged fan", "bozo" and a "creep". Why? Because I was not accepting of his lack of communication after being paid $1,200.00. He can call it what he wants. I WAS a fan of his for a very long time and this is how I get treated from someone like him. I really think he needs to evaluate himself when commiting to do work with his fans. I never for one moment called this guy any type of childlish names. I did what i felt was right at the moment. I never meant ANY harm or disrespect to Rob or his family. I asked top keep this to ourselfs being that this is our problem not everyone else. He took it upon himself to label me as a "bad apple". Bad apple I do not think I am. Pissed off for his lack of communication yes but not a bad apple as he calls it. I have learned a great deal with this situation. I guess you live and learn it's how I see this.

Welcome to the board will, no reason to talk about you as if you arent reading this. I can understand what you were going through and its obvious you went about this the wrong way. I also think it was unprofessional of Rob to share this kind of stuff whether you asked him to or not. In the future, dont give this guy or anyone else that amount of money for something PERIOD.
It also helps if you can get a clear projected date of when your stuff is gonna be finished with an artist BEFORE paying them, that way when they come up short you have a reason to really bitch about.
Any pics of this "killborg" character, my curiousity would like to see this.

I wasn't wearing shorts but that is irrelevant as I ALWAYS wear jeans. Anyway, I went downtown and I passed by an ice cream store that had a sign in the window for a root beer float sundae. SUNDAE! I was immediately intrigued. I tried to go around the block, but there was no left turn and I don't like to make rights. I eventually went two blocks north, and then made a left. When I got nearer to the ice cream shop I noticed that there was no parking spot anyway. So I thought I'd drive a little bit and just take the first spot that came up and walk back, as I said it was a nice day. So I went three blocks north and one block left and lo and behold there was a parking spot. As I pulled in, I noticed that it had a meter. I knew I didn't have any change, but it was five minutes to 7 PM and the city has free parking after 7. So I parked and got out and pretended to fumble for change for five minutes just in case a cop was watching me. At 7, I decided the coast was clear and I walked back the four blocks to the ice cream shop for my now well earned root beer float sundae. Mmmm. I passed a girl on the street, but she was on her cell phone, probably to her boyfriend. I decided I hated him. Soon, I was within a block and I passed that furniture store on 3rd Street. I couldn't believe they are trying to sell couches for $3,500+, but hey, maybe in the business district. Anyway, I finally got to the ice cream store and guess what? The door was locked. The shop had closed at 7 PM. If I hadn't futzed around by the parking meter, I woulda made it. I saw an employee through the window counting out the cash drawer, but she acted like she didn't see me. I knocked and she pointed at her watch. Wow. I tried to see her name tag. I think it said Katie or Karlie or Kristie, but I wasn't sure. I planned to call her manager in the morning. I wish her name tag had her last name on it so I could call her parents, too, and let them know how unprofessional their daughter is, but sadly most name tags only have first names on them these days. Sometimes there's a last initial. Then I thought maybe "Katie's" Dad was picking her up after work and I could just tell him that way. I looked up the street and there was only one parked car with a person in it, but he looked like he was much bigger than I was so I decided to let it go. By this time, I had a bad headache and I just wanted to get back to my car and go home and lie down. And by the time I did get to my car, I had forgotten the name of the ice cream place, too. So I couldn't even look it up in the White Pages the next morning. You win this round, Katie or Karlie or whatever. The next time I drove that way it was two or three years later and a new business was in that storefront. And no wonder, with service like that.

That's what I was wondering.
And um, is it common business practice in comics to pay someone in FULL before they deliver the art? As a graphic/web designer, I ask for 1/3 or 1/2 up-front (to know if my potential client is serious and won't disappear after I spend hours getting started), and ask for payment in full upon delivery of the completed work. Paying someone who's known to miss deadlines in full before getting completed art was foolish. Calling Marvel and his mom was overzealous and stupid. And putting a Rob Liefeld cover on your comic? Unless it's meant to be a "period piece" of the 90s, why would you do that? :)

Yeah, even with Will's overzealousness, if Rob keeps the money without performing, Will's got a winning Breach of Contract claim on his hands. It would have been a better idea to call a lawyer instead of Rob's mom and employers, though.

The best part is where the guy pops in and sends the cover art in as a solicitation.

Creepy behavior aside, if I had already paid for a commission that was supposedly gonna be started (ready?) in a week and was still waiting for it three months later, I'd be a little pissed, too.

You'd be surprised at the wait list for some of the top names in the business and you do pay upfront. If this would have been Hitch he commissioned the art from it probably would have costed him four times as much and had twice as long a wait.
And another thing. If I commision someone to draw something from me can I turn around and submit it to previews as a variant cover?
Lost of freaky stuff happened here.

I think this is the offical sequel! You're referring to the tail end of the trilogy...based on the dates.

I see that Selby Jr. got to you first, huh?

was Liefeld good at meeting deadlines at Marvel or even Image? why would this guy think it was going to be different with his job? and why didn't Liefeld just give the guy his money back and say he couldn't do the job? I would think that would have squashed the situation.

Hmm so many things wrong here..
First, the fact that someone would PAY to have Liefeld art is laughable in and of itself.. however...
Rob took his money with the understanding that he would provide said art. That is a binding contract to do work. They entered into this in April. Rob had family issues, that is fine. So give it a month. That would make it June. It's now a few days from September. He needed to communicate with people he has taken money from to let them know he is delayed. It is not their responsability to go check on his status.
The kid called his mom and Marvel. Yeah, that is a bit childish and weird, however, it is doubtful that Rob posted his phone number. So expecting him to e-mail or IM is a bit weak. If you are a pro and take money for art, you should have a business number. I am curious what the kid said to Marvel or the mom-- was he rude? Was he polite? Did he courteously ask for a contact number for Rob or did he freak out and badmouth him?
And now Rob is NOT going to do the art.. bad bad move. This dude could push it with a lawyer.. If he is saavy enough, I think he could probably have a lawyer put a lien on Rob's house..
And now Rob is going to knee-jerk against about 2 decades worth of experiences and hate all convention goers and such.. puh-lease. One bad apple and all that.. Grow a pair, nancy boy!
Rob needs to put his big girl panties on, do the artwork that he was paid for, tell the kid to never contact his family or place of business again, stop naming the kid online and discussing the situation (potential lawsuit there, plus the feeding the troll factor) and be done with it.
