Chris Redfield Returns in Resident Evil 5
Producer Jun Takeuchi confirms main protagonist as the former S.T.A.R.S member.
By Yoshi Sato, 07/18/2007

This week's Famitsu has revealed more details on Resident Evil 5 which was recently shown at E3.

The story takes place roughly 10 years after the Raccoon Incident in the first Resident Evil game. The character which we've seen in the trailer is confirmed to be former S.T.A.R.S. member Chris Redfield. He now works for an organization called BSAA and was sent to a location (shown in the trailer) to investigate on a special case. Producer Jun Takeuchi comments, "What has happened to Chris during these 10 years? By showing his past, we can begin to unravel things that were not resolved in Resident Evil 4. In fact, Resident Evil 5 will retain most of its gameplay style [from Resident Evil 4] with some new features which I cannot talk about yet at this point."

The producer did mention though that the game will have more distinction between light and darkness, "For example, as Chris enters a building, his eyes has to gradually adjust to the dark indoors. The same can be said with the opposite where stepping out from a dark place would cause glare to his eyes."

He also adds, "The enemies this time are not zombies nor are they Los Ganados either, but are quite smart, human-like creatures. One of the main theme in this game is that Chris is fighting for a cause that is not really clear. Is he fighting for good or evil?"

The E3 trailer will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace this July 27 in Japan so expect to see it on North American around the same time as well.

So RE5 takes place 10 years after Racoon City...that would make RE5's timeline be 4 years after RE4.

I can't wait to play this game...although obviously we have quite a ways before it's released.

Quotes To Kill Zombies By: The Best (Worst) Resident Evil Quotes Ever

It’s not Shakespeare, but we can’t help but love the cheesy dialogue infecting the grandaddy of survival horror.
By ROBERT WORKMAN

Resident Evil

[The following dialogue gets spoken by Chris after defeating Plant 42.]
Chris: Looks like we got to the…root of the problem.

Corny Meter: 10
Chris almost sounds like he's firing off a James Bond-esque quote with this one. Heck, it even sounds more like Austin Powers at this point. "He'll never get a-head in life."

[The following quote can be heard after Jill escapes nearly being crushed.]
Barry Burton: "That was too close. You were almost a Jill sandwich!"

Corny Meter: 8
The Lament of Barry BurtonSomething along the lines of "You were almost crushed to death!" or "Man, that was close!" would have fared far better than the likes of being called a "Jill sandwich". Her nervous response of "Thanks…" didn't do much either. She should've implied the need for bread and cheese. Well, wait, Resident Evil's dialogue already comes with cheese. Heh.

[This quote comes from Barry while walking through a monster-filled hallway.]
Barry Burton: "WHOOOOAAAAA! This hall is dangerous!"

Corny Meter: 8
Yes, Barry, players already KNOW that the hall was dangerous. See, the whole damn mansion has been plagued with zombies and other Umbrella-created menaces. Not just the hallway. Imagine the bathrooms. UGH.

[This quote just HAD to be included…]
Barry Burton: "Here, take this lock pick. I'm sure that you, the master of unlocking, will make use of it."

Corny Meter: 10
Really, can there be such a thing as a "master of unlocking"? Does some kind of special school degree exist to decree someone as a specialist in undoing locks? No matter, this line lives in Resident Evil infamy and even inspired a fun little mode in Capcom's Resident Evil game for the Nintendo DS, where gamers could play through a mode called Master of Knifing. No, that doesn't require a degree either.

Barry Burton: "Let's hope this is not Chris' blood."

Corny meter: 9
It wouldn't be wrong to wish that a puddle of blood didn't belong to a comrade. However, the way that Barry said it, he came off like a student just getting into crime scene investigation rather than a S.T.A.R.S. veteran. His further affirmation of "Chris is our old partner, y'know" wasn't really needed either. They obviously work together as a team. Duh!

Resident Evil 2

[This quote comes from an innocent truck driver after a zombie confrontation.]
Truck Driver: "That guy's a maniac! Why'd he bite me?"

Corny Meter: 8
Honestly, if you have to ask why a zombie bit you, you deserve to die, period. Look, zombies eat flesh, okay? They see a living person and consider them part of the daily caloric intake. If you stand there and let them bite you and then question why they bit you…ugh, forget it, not worth arguing anymore. He bit you because he likes you, okay?

[This quote comes from Claire before blasting the crap out of Mr. X.]
Claire: "You lose, big guy!"

Corny Meter: 9
Let's look at this line. You have a super-powered weapon in your grasp and you're ready to blow the living hell out of an inhuman monstrosity and the best thing that comes to mind, the best thing that can possibly be said…"You lose, big guy!"? Why not something along the lines of "Enjoy your trip to hell!". Even "Say cheese, jackass!" would've been better than something along the lines of "You lose, big guy!" I could be told that at the checkout line at the supermarket after losing on a lottery ticket.

Resident Evil 3

[The following line comes after Jill goes to ask Carlos Oliviera a question following an encounter with the Nemesis.]
Carlos Oliviera: "I know, you want to ask me out. All the foxy ladies love my accent. It drives them crazy."

Corny Meter: 8
Dude, really, lay off a bit. There was a huge difference between Leon's accidental undie peek and your blatant come-on to a girl who just took on an eight-foot, nearly-indestructible hunter. Just lighten up, answer the question and THEN offer the girl in a tubetop and leather skirt a drink. EASE into it.

[The following ends up being uttered when Jill prepares to kill the nemesis.]
Jill Valentine: "You want S.T.A.R.S., I'll give you S.T.A.R.S.!"

Corny Meter: 8
Way to send out the Nemesis with a bang there, babe. Let's make a corny joke about the organization you work for and then tie it in to the age-old expression of "seeing stars" in the worst way possible. Again, a "yippie-ki-yay mother****er" sort of line would've figured in better here than this cheesy send-off.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica

[This quote follows Wesker's threat to Chris Redfield mid-game.]
Wesker: "Until we meet again. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!"

Corny Meter: 8
Talk about taking a laugh and stretching it beyond its means. Saying something like "huge, evil chuckle" would've done the trick here instead of, what, 20 "ha"'s.

[This quote follows a bump-in between Claire Redfield and Alfred Ashford.]
Claire:"Alfred! Cross dressing freak!"

Corny Meter: 9
Really, let's just leave this one be.

[This quote came after Wesker first introduced himself to Claire.]
Wesker: "Let's just say that I am just a ghost to haunt your dear brother."

Corny Meter: 8
"Dear brother?" Don't moms usually say something like that and not menacing super-villains?

.

Yeah, Claire was like a better crackshot, sniper, stuntwoman, etc. than anyone else in the series.

Capcom and their whole suspension of disbelief, or whatever.

They had Jill as a former member of Delta Force.

...Except women can't join Delta Force, just like they can't become Navy SEALS. Oops.

And Chris, who was 23 in the first RE game, was a former member of the airforce and an experienced fighter pilot who was dishonorably discharged from the military yet managed to get a job in law enforcement.

...except this would SO not be the case, as a Dishonorable Discharge makes getting a job at McDonald's easier than becoming a fucking lawyer.

Glad they're starting to at least attempt research with their newer games.

But egads. Hapless civilians more competent than Snake Plissken.

and what's this other script thing?

George Romero (the guy who did the Night of the Living Dead series) was originally set to do the RE movie. He wrote a script that followed the plot of the original game more or less closely (closer than the first RE movie, anyway), but he also made some changes that some people didn't really dig.

I remember Chris was supposed to be a Native American or something, and Jill's boyfriend as opposed to a STARS squad member.

There's no way this is worse than the script I wrote for Showgirls 2: The Spirits Within though.

I never cared much for him...until Code Veronica when he had those lizard like eyes and super fast reflexes. Now I just can't wait to see more of him.

And the Johnny Cage SHADOW KICK!

That always did bother me a bit about RE2...I mean, I know it's a game and all that, but jeez. They really kinda pushed the envelope there. Claire was a college student that was super badass with all sorts of weaponry, and Annette Birkin was a SCIENTIST that was so adept at shooting guns that he SHOT ADA'S GUN FROM HER HAND without hurting her.

I mean, damn.

Man, that Final Fantasy movie was so incredibly awful.

I'm so dead serious. I totally wrote up a script where Nomi gets into the supernatural elements. The day I quit posting here is probably the day I'll post it for all to ridicule.

Hells yeah!

Also, the spontaneous ability to run on walls. Man, that was probably my favorite scene in Code Veronica. When he's getting slapped around by Alexia and then he does a spin and runs on the wall and punches the hell out of her. It just looked so cool when I was a lad.

I'm hoping to god we get the final shodown between Chris and Wesker that they built up in Code Veronica. That needs to be done and done now, I demand it!

It'll end the same way as all the rest..

Chris will fight Wesker who will be a giant monster for some reason, someone will throw him down a bazooka, he will blow Wesker up, Africa will explode.

It's the Africa explosion that does it. The finale wouldn't be anywhere near as effective if Africa didn't explode.

And then immediately after Africa explodes, we get witty comment, like, "Eat that Africa" *credits*

While the dismembered and burnt arms, legs and torsos of the proud Ugandan people fall from the sky behind our heroes.

There's nothing like a perfectly timed bazooka drop. It's magical.
