View Full Version : My Upcoming Conventions
Hey dudes and dudettes,
I'll be continuing my march across North America with appearances at:
SAN DIEGO COMICON (all 5 days) July 26-29
WIZARD CHICAGO CON (All 4 days) August 9-12
FAN EXPO (TORONTO) (all 3 days) August 24-26
I am unable to do sketches at cons (good ones at least) because i am always shootin' the shit with someone and there is absolutely no time to do anything good. But i'm more than happy to give ya a quickie with a sharpie... wow that just doesn't sound right.

uh...I'm not sure. My friends have been trying to convince me to go, telling me this is going to be a good con. But starting next week I'm hitting three major cons in the space of one month. i'm thinking i'll be burned out... Orlando IS local to me (sort of). when is it?

September, the tail end of the month. The con is 15-20 minutes from my house, so it was a no-brainer for me, but you're a bit further away. :)

I don't know about Greg, but I love them. I love meeting new people/fans as well as seeing friends that I only see at cons. Of course, this is just my 3rd year out there as a creator.
How many years have you been out there now Greg? A lot different now that you get invited huh? How were your first years as a new creator at cons?

I don't consider it a chore at all. Conventions are always fun to me, and a great place to get feedback on my artwork. I hit about 10 cons a year (although i missed them all last year)... The travelling is always a drag, but once I'm there it is all a blast. Its absolutely the most accessible way to network and i suggest the con circuit for anyone wanting to break into the comics field. I pretty much got my big break at Marvel by attending cons.
In fact, this very forum came about at a con. Brian agreed to get me started on his message board at my last show (WizPhilly). Then, by total coincidence, Shannon just happened to be sitting behind me and she agreed to help me moderate it. Although... she is doing as piss-poor job of banning those Elektra-barbie posters.
....i'm just kidding Shannon. Don't ban the barbie thread :)
....yet.

hey Greg glad you're back from SDCC! Hope it was a blast! unfortunate for those of us stuck on the east coast who didn't have a chance to see you there. any other upcoming conventions you're attending in the not too distant future?
Are you planning on attending the Big Apple National Con this November? it's the national! Nobody misses the national! i hear you can find pibb on every street ;)
Not sure if i can make Big Apple this year. I'm exhausted from SDCC and I still have two huge shows in the next three weeks-- Chicago and Toronto's Comic Book Expo. I will definitely attend the New York Comicon in April. I did not hesitate to order my table as soon as the 2006 show ended. Mark my words: NYCC will be the biggest comic book show in 5 years.

Speaking from a staffer's perspective (yes, it's true, I really am everywhere), it is an *EXCELLENT* show. Rarely have I experienced a show in it's first year that ran as well as this one did. Where as it was small, I've yet to speak to a person that was dissatisfied. I say do it. Bring the kids, come down a day early and go to Disney :)
Sometimes the smaller shows are nice! Come on...you know you wanna! Plus, I'll be there working (I think)!
And yes. NYCCC will be the largest. I was there last year and it was insanity.

Will you be hitting up WWT this year? I have seen you there as well as WWC last year (I think) a couple times but haven't stopped by your booth. If you come, I will bring you a beverage that will make you most happy. ;)
That is very tempting... damn you.

Greg, you sound like me. I'm hitting up Orlando Comic Con next weekend and that's probably it for the year. I've just got so much going with my projects and my FT job that I don't have time for cons! I LOVE them though. I hope to do more shows in 2008. All depends though on how my projects are coming. :)

You too Shannon...finally get to meet the other half of the Hypersonic team:)!
What about MegaCon? that's right around the corner from you isn't it? MegaCon is a very good event. I've missed it only once since 1995. you should go.

Hey! I've been trying to get out to the Overland Park show for a few years now. Something always comes up! This year I already had signed up for Supanova Con on the same weekend as the Kansas show so it looks like I'll miss out again. I'm going to make it a point to get out there next year (2009 I mean)-- doesn't Kevin Nowland attend this show? He's awesome--a big influence when I was hoping to be a penciller.

Dude, you have got to check out Planet Comicon in KC Mo http://www.planetcomicon.com/
& Fallcon in MN.

CON REPORT:blah:: Just got back from the FX International show in Orlando and it was a joy to finally hear the wonderful sights and sounds of a convention for the first time in many months. The turn out on Saturday was pretty good and i sold all my art books. I got to meet Brom who is really a nice guy--very easy to talk to. I told him what a big D&D freak I was in the 80's. A big wrestler came up to my table--I didn't know who he was, but my friends recognized him and he certainly stood out in a crowd! His name was Raven, and he wanted to get 2 of my prints --She-Hulk #16(with Wolverine and Wendigo) and # 15 (The Steranko homage). The show had a wrestling ring with some local wrestlers, so maybe he came to check that out. Oh yeah, Shannon was there and i got a free Hypersonic preview book, Clay Moore, who was my liason at Image while I was publishing my art book, was at the show promoting '76 and i got a free copy which is grooooovy. Finally, I got a Cuddle Monster from Dan Brereton's wife Chartruse...again for free. I'm going to give it to my son today--either he will love it...or be scarred for life---I'll let you guys know. Anyway, FREE STUFF IS GOOD STUFF, BABY! I also talked to Phil Noto and thanked him for pushing me over the edge to buy the Cintiq tablet. He was sketching one of those Captain America sketch covers (a full waist up shot) and he thought it sucked...dude, it was so awesome I don't what he was talking about! Anyway, he is having a baby in a few months, so give the guy a rest at the next con will ya. About 1:00 I signed at the Virgin Megastore booth (my whole purpose of being at the con in the first place!) and they were pretty cool. They are not allowed to sell the Shadow Hunter lithos in their store because the location is at "Downtown Disney". Anyway, the lithos are awesome and i got a couple for my self--I really hit the jackpot on free shit! The best part of the whole show was i got to sit next to my long time pal Billie Marimon (he pencilled Damage for DC) and we cracked jokes all day. I treated him to dinner and we got Filets at Tony Roma's. I ate way too much and way to fast. I almost fell asleep at the wheel driving home, but as you can see I'm safe and sound now. :blah:

Ha, your report made me laugh Greg. :)
It was a fun show, definitely. The guy who runs Creator Alley works his ass off to make all the creators comfortable and happy, and he definitely took care of everyone in my opinion. That said, I consider FX a "warm-up" show to Megacon since everyone who goes tends to always ask me if I'm going to be at Megacon. This leads to great sales at Megacon, and not so great sales at FX. Nonetheless, I love FX since it's the first con of the year for me and I love seeing all my industry friends. :)
I finally met Brian Wood at FX so that's a big thing for me as I'm a big fan of his work. He's an awesome guy. I also finally met B. Clay Moore, Jeremy Haun and the rest of the Atomic Revolver crew. They are a fun bunch. I got a chance to talk briefly with Phil Noto, Dan Brereton, Andy Runton, Art Balazar (ok, so dinner is more than briefly), and of course Greg Horn which is always a great pleasure. And, as far as celebrities go, the only one I actually paid to get an autograph from was William B. Davis from The X-Files, as I'm a huge XF fan. I did see/talk to most everyone else there during the VIP party and whatnot. Everyone celebrity-wise that I spoke with were down to earth which is nice. Saturday night at the VIP party, I really enjoyed Michael Winslow's act. He really is a talented and funny guy.
All in all, a great con, even if everyone is waiting for March. :p
Anyway,

For Chicago. And sure I don't mind coming a day early give me the time and we'll be okay.
Thanks man! I would greatly appreciate the help! I just need help getting stuff from the hotel into the show and then you are free to do whatever you want. The cool thing is you get in a day early and you can scout out the show and maybe meet someone you were looking for with no line in front of them. Just remind me as we get closer to June and we'll set up a time to meet.

How far is your hotel from the convention center? Also I may go for a commission but it depends on where the cards fall in terms of money. Thanks Greg!

You should really go to this one. If you consider that San Diego is only about 20% comics right now, Wizard Chicago is THE biggest comics show in the US.
