hey Greg, I saw from that pic in the CINTIQ thread a bottle of Pibb? didn't know that was your favorite. Cool DVD collection as well w/ Apocolypto cover being the most visible. What else is in the Greg Horn collection?

Well, it goes beyond just "liking". I LOVE Pibb! I even included a homage to Pibb in my art book-- check it out. On the cover to Elektra #5, Elektra has broken into some kind of laser-protected vault, and people would ask me at cons "Hey greg, What did she steal". So on the inside cover of my artbook I edited Elektra out of the painting, so you can see the valuable item she wanted.

Can you see the little pibb bottle on the pedestal?

Yeah Apocalypto is my current favorite--one of the best movies I ever read. Ha! Seriously, if you haven't seen this movie...YOU MUST! It is the most gruelling movie I've ever experienced. I kept the storyline a secret from my wife, so she had no idea what to expect-- she almost threw up half way through (and she's no punk!). We suggested it to a friend, and she said she was "exhausted" at the end. A lot of people dwell on the gore in this film, but the reaction you get is really from the story itself. The lead character is in one predicament after the other, and you are really, really concerned about him and his family. The villians are really scary and disgusting... It's an unbelievable nerve-racking film.
You probably noticed my other DVDs: I love Blade Runner!!! Last Samurai, LOTR, Gladiator, Taxi Driver, Conan. My movie collection is not too big. Since I'm painting 24/7, I like movies I can listen to while I draw (so Apocalypto is not good for this!). Master and commander is great--I love the historical nods in this film. My favorite movie all-time is JAWS. Best movie ever pretty much-- ultimate man vs nature flick. Cap'n Quint-- best character ever. He introduces himself by clawing his fingernails down a chalkboard!! Perfect!!

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE MST3K. I own every single episode.

cool, cool. Nice toys on the shelves there. I see Elektra, naturally, and what appears to be a burnt baby?

nice movie picks, but what about la tele? what shows can keep you away from the drawing board? Is it safe to say Heroes is popular with comic creators?

We don't talk about the baby.

The Elektra is an honest-to-goodness Elektra BARBIE! Or were you reffering to that little tiny Hero Clix Elektra? I don't play the game or collect the pieces, but i picked this up at Florida Supercon because the pose Heroclix used is made directly from my cover to Elektra #7.

As far as the TV goes, it is really tough for me to watch anything because i can't afford to be distracted from my artwork, so i like to listen to shows instead. For awhile it was sports.. because they'd always show you an instant replay if you missed something cool. Then, my big addiction was Mystery Science theater 3000 because i could listen to their comments. but when Trace left (the original crow) it died off for me. right now, I'm big into the History channels. I recently hooked up Dish Network (Direct TV sucks) and i get History, history International, and the military channel with the DVR function--I'm in heaven pretty much. The only way i can watch a TV program is to get a DVD set of it. Any suggestions? Sopranos, Lost, Heroes, 24, Grey's anatomy, Alias... all these shows i have not watched, so which one would you pick as an entire run of shows??

Hey Greg I was wondering what your opinions are about the whole Skrulektra thing? Seeing as your work is the iconic interpretation of the character and gave you your big break, do you like what has happened? Cause I sure don't!

I gotta tell ya...i'm not decided yet. I'm waiting to see how the story unfolds, but of course my initial reaction was pure rage! But, then i realized that the skrullification probably doesn't go back that far (At least not back to the point when I was working on the book)....maybe a little before Civil War? So it's not like every Elektra cover i painted was really a Skrull masqeurading as Elektra.
Here's the BIG question: "where are they keeping the REAL Elektra?"

PS. I recently started a thread "Would you do a Skrull?" on Bendis's forum--it got over 100 replies, and yes I AM very proud of myself  .

Im hoping it doesn't go that far back either because if all the comics I bought featured a Skrull sleeper agent, well, Marvel can go fuck itself. It would be the clone saga all over again! Unfortunately I think that she is being killed off again and wont be coming back. I hope to God I'm wrong because I want more E! That Echo bitch just aint good enough.

Gulp... maybe it goes back to Frank Miller's run! Maybe the Elektra that Bullseye killed wasn't even Elektra!! Maybe Elektra never even existed--she was a Skrull agent the whole time--sent to get personal details on Matt Murdock!!!

Okay, here's what I'm wondering about.......

From what I understand, most of your work is done digitally. However, I would assume that some of the process has to be done pencil and paper/hardcopy. I always wonder about that especially now with guys like you and Clayton Crain doing a lot of digital stuff. So how much do you do with just a pencil and paper?

My other question is what kind of computer do you use, since your work is computer heavy, is your computer super fancy and top of the line?

Horn
07-24-2007, 05:08 PM
I like to start my paintings with a high detail pencil drawing--A lot of artists go straight to the computer and start painting away, but sometimes the results can look a bit...uh... computer-y! Not that full-on digital art is bad...its just that there is a lot of art out there that is looking very similar to many other art pieces, and this is because the tools of Photoshop and other painting programs have tell-tale markers, especially the dodge and burn tools, which can be over-used (and usually are!). You have to be a pretty experienced artist to keep these things from over-powering your work. Of course, I have seen plenty of fully-digital artists who are great, I'm just saying that I personally start with pencils to help inject some of that organic, traditional feel in to the art-- and i believe that most people like this look. My background before the computer was airbrushing, and my hope has always been to make the final art look like a hyper-detailed airbrush painting. I don't always pull it off, but most people didn't know I was doing digital art until I said "Hey! I'm doing digital art". Now five years later they say "oh greg does digital art, you know." ...like they knew it the whole time, right?

Windows blows a chorus line of chimps. I say this because I have a Windows-based machine myself. Believe it or not (I swear this IS the truth), I'm still working on a machine from 2001! But, I bought a MONSTER back then. Dual processors, 4 GB of RAM, and most importantly: onboard (I mean built right into the motherboard) 15,000 RPM SCSI drives. These drives still smoke a present day SATA drive that the "experts" are raving about these days! Anyway, my computer has only 2 drawbacks. One, the processors are only a paltry 1.2 Ghz, and MAN it is just too damn slow when I get to the end of a cover project and there are many many layers. The second drawback fills me with burning fiery hatred: the stupid Windows OS limits any given program to 2GB max (in Photoshop this comes out to 1.77 GB)....problem: I've never worked on a project that HASN'T reached the 1.77 limit. When this happens the computer slows to a crawl. Its horrible. So, recently I decided to upgrade to the brand-spankin' new Windows Vista. Unfortunately, Windows still has the same stupid-ass bottleneck it had 6 years ago! :-x You can go online for rig fixes like 3 GB switch and other changes to the boot.ini, but they can cause "Instability", so no thanks--I can't afford to have my computer crash. So, i sent the computer back and was leaning towards getting a Mac, but it is tough because i know Windows inside and out--i can trouble shoot it or whatever. I was just about to pull the trigger when my back order on the Wacom Cintiq tablet came available, so i bought that instead.
So... here I am, still putzing around with my little 1.2 Ghz processors...it's almost sad.....waaaugh.

hey Greg, She-Hulk #20 came out this week, and while it's not one of your covers, still very cute and amusing.

Out of curiosity you didn't do this issue's cover? Schedule busy? If given the opportunity what would you have done with it?

while we're at it, any other projects at Marvel down the pipeline you can mention? since Dan Slott is moving onto ASM any chance of you doing a guest cover whenever Steve McNiven or any of the other spidey artists is out?

Yeah that month was insane work-wise, and i didn't want to turn in something not up to par. Luckily, Molly was able to get John Watson to fill in who is a great artist! I love how the old comic he drew looks so real. Anyway, I knew nothing of the story on that one, so i can't say what i would have done.

You'd be surprised-- Its extremely difficult to get cover jobs on the top-selling books. McNiven is one of the best artists in the industry, so he is going to do his own covers. I've drawn a few illustrations of Spiderman for Wizard and another for a collector's playing card tin. Here's an interior piece I did for Daredevil #65....

Yeah variety would be good! I think I've done some illustrations of Marvel's icon characters in the past, and I think they are pretty good. Take a look at my Marvel page on my website at:
http://www.greghornjudge.com (It's the button in the top left corner, then click "Marvel Icons")
But don't get me wrong! -- I'd never want to drop female charcaters completely. The Women of Marvel keep things interesting wouldn't you say?

Just curious...some artists do Ms. Marvel's costume in more of a black than blue, while you (Horn) do it more blue than black. Was that an editorial decision or do you just like it more blue? Also depending on the artist, she may or may not have white-out eyes. You would think that not having the white-out eyes would lend itself better to evoking emotion in a piece. Just curious, why did you go with the white-out eyes?

Excuse the late reply on this guys. I was out all week. The blue ms Marvel outfit is just a personal preference, but I am still trying to go very dark with the tones. In some cases I will use blue to represent a black (like the way colorists color dark-haired people's hair with a blue color). I went with the white out eyes because i thought that was part her look now...almost iconic to her...you know...like batman and wolverine have whiteout eyes. I prefer characters WITH eyes showing though--you get more connection through the eye contact.

Yeah, there's no such thing as a brief bio... it took me 11 years just to break in at Marvel, and i've been battling away in four different industries ever since! I'll post some of the stories at a later date, but my art book details a few cool stories like: My creator-owned comic called J.U.D.G.E. and how it helped me get noticed by Marvel, my muralist jobs from the 90's that I did to make ends meet (well, not really), and lastly, the story of how my inclusion in The Art of Marvel 2003 led to me being hired to illustrate the 2004 Olympic basketball poster!
Anyway, let me answer your other questions:
I picked up my first comic book in 3rd grade. Avengers 203 I believe..its the one with Carmine Infantino's art and they are fighting the Black Knight. I was hooked immediately and started drawing my own comic books in class! My comic was called "The Justifiers" and all my ideas were Avengers rip offs. I had characters like Phantom, Metal Man, and Cheetah (which are copycats of Vision, Iron Man, and Black Panther!) Soon, I had all my friends making their own comic books -- we had 5 titles going by middle school. Once we all got to high school, we kind of lost the mojo on creating comics...that is until we read Secret Wars! We decided to do a similar grand Finale book where all our characters appear in a Battle Royale on the moon! It was called "FINAL CONFLICT" and everybody was supposed to die..except i never finished it.
As far as characters I'd like to draw, I'd love to go another round with Emma Frost. When we were doing her origin book a few years ago, I assumed that sooner or later the story would lead into her Hellfire Club days. Every month I dreamed of the day when I'd get to paint her in the 70's corset/fur outfit! Of course that never happened and the series ended just before that era. Other characters are Wolverine, Rogue, Jean grey, Vision, Ultron, and Scarlet Witch. I've already painted one of my "must draw" characters with Tigra on this month's Ms Marvel cover! For DC, Wonder woman would be a blast as well as Batman.

I'm not sure who was making it, but it was listed in the Diamond Comics Previews magazine awhile back. It was going to be of the cover of number 1 and be 29.99. Supposed to have come out a long time ago, right after the MM first look copy.

Wow, it's been months, since anyone's posted something on this Q&A thread which was originally meant to be about Greg Horn's love of Pibb!

So i'm here to hopefully start it up again, so here goes.

Greg, we've been seeing some great Variant Covers for some issues of the BND Amazing Spidey by some top artists such as Bryan Hitch, David Finch, and Adi Granov.

Can you give us any hint if you'v'e been commisioned to draw one? Hopefully one reuniting you with Dan 'the Fan' Slott? :)

I have a question, and this seems to be the place to ask it. I've seen numerous people selling fanart at cons (or art that is copywritten someplace). I know you have rights to work with certain characters and all, but I doubt EVERYONE who sells that art has the same access to say...marvel characters. What's the rules on that? I know, in my experience, no one seems to really want original art, but people will purchase art of a character they are already familiar with in a heartbeat.

Either way, I am getting carried away...

I just want to know how 'fanart' prints work? Can you sell them? Do you need to contact people to get permissions? Any information you could provide would be much obliged.

What?! People are actually posting on this Q & A thread? I guess I'm a little late on all these... the answers are:
No, maybe, sometimes, no, don't do it, all the best ones, and no, only barbies. :blah: Actually, I have a decent collection of art books, but i don't collect single pieces of art--too 'spensive. I collect airsoft guns and that's about it.

FINALLY! Greg notices that people are posting on this thread. And to think it all started with me asking if he liked Pibb ;) Ahhhh memories.

Ok I think I gots some new Q's: So Greg, seen any movies you liked in the past year? Any ones good enough to add to your DVD collection like LOTR and Apocolypto? Which one of these Marvel films are you more excited for: Iron Man or the Incredible Hulk.

Hey, Greg!

I just glanced at the first page of this thread and noticed that you, too, are a big fan of MST3K! I've watched a ton of that show, although I only own one three-movie collection on DVD so far. Anwyay, in case you were wondering what Mike Nelson and the gang are doing lately, you'll find them at:

http://www.rifftrax.com/

Apparently, they're creating downloadable audio commentaries for less obscure movies than they used to (The Star Wars trilogies, the Spidey trilogy, some Star Trek movies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, etc., etc.). I think each audio file is three or four bucks. You download it, and start playing the audio when you start the movie. And voila! Instant MST3K for some of your favorite flicks!

Now, after all that, you'd think I've done this myself, but I haven't yet. So, I can't vouch for any of the audio tracks in their entirety. I have listened to the samples they have on their website and they seem cool. Plus, it's Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett! I trust 'em to bring the funny. Just thought you (and the rest of the Hornets that frequent this board) should know!

I saw a few movies on an airplane last month...not the best way to view a film really.... I am Legend was kinda boring--the fake deers at the beginning turned me off immediately, and i knew everything that was going to happen. Will Smith's "crazy guy" was not nearly crazy enough. Sweeny Todd? ...musicals are always a tough sell with me and the songs were not memorable like Grease or Nightmare before Christmas. I think the only one i would watch a 2nd time was No Country for Old Men-- that's a pretty riveting movie. I just recently saw two classics for the first time: Dances with Wolves which was awesome, and Field of Dreams which was a bit of a disappointment. Tombstone is playing on Starz right now and i've watched/listened to it about 10 times in the last month. This movie is spectacular..."Why Johnny ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave." There's at least 10 great lines in this movie. On top of that, Doc Holiday plays Chopin... and you just can't beat Chopin!!!
I think i am awaiting Iron Man more... no...i change my mind...definitely Hulk...

I'm a HUGE MST3k fan. I have every single episode except for the first season. I was telling people on a previous thread that this is a great show to watch while I'm working because I can listen to the jokes and draw at the same time! Does that new rifftrax stuff really work? i mean...what if your DVD player is a little slow? It sounds like it would be tough to synchronize everything. The Star Trek movies would be interesting... ahhhh don't get me started on this!

C'mon, Greg! Don't be a Negative-Nellie! It's only three or four bucks to try it out! And it'll be absolutely perfect for an artist like you, who listens to the movies as he makes his pretty paintings! The MST3K crew needs your support!

Besides, I want you to be my guinea pig and tell me if it's any good! :-D

GREG HORN (cover artist of MS. MARVEL): Well first, I thought Robert Downey Jr. was just perfection as Tony Stark. In this role he seemed unnaturally...natural. There were a lot of nay-sayers when he was first cast, but once again we see that you can't complain about a movie until you actually go to the theater and watch it.
Overall, I loved the modern look of this movie. It was fresh and I didn't feel so much like I was watching a remake of something else. Congratulations to Marvel! Your first movie is a smash!!!

So Greg, care to tell us about your next cover for Marvel. You know 00 00, as in OOh Ooh Ahh ahh as in the sound a monkey makes? as in MONKEY VARIANT!

Monkey Variant by Greg Horn
Ten years ago, the Marvel Knights imprint was born. Who knew that the cutting-edge reinventions of characters like Daredevil, Black Panther and Punisher would not only revive those properties, but also serve as the
opening salvo of the reinvention of Marvel Comics?
MARVEL SPOTLIGHT takes a look back at those heady days with mastermind Joe Quesada, plus all the great stuff that has come since — particularly the works that
the ever-evolving line is producing today, with titles
focusing on Captain America, Iron Man and Wolverine. Conversations with creators and the opening of artists' sketchbooks will take you behind the scenes of ten years worth of Marvel Knights glory!

Hey Greg, gotta ask what your opinion was of Mighty Avengers 16? It looks like all your Elektra work was for the real deal, but its still hazy as to whether she was a Skrull in her excellent Wolverine appearances. She kicked some major Skrulll ass, but do you think she is still alive? and will be a little bit sad if E is dead (AGAIN)?

Hi Carine,
I haven't completed my con schedule for 2009, although i do have about 4 US shows that are definite. For my last show of 2008, i am going to the show in Essen Germany, and maybe if i make a good impression this year they will invite me again to France for 2009. If i ever get to go, one of my goals is to see Mont St Michael. Its such an amazing place!
