I left the States in Nov of 2005. Now, nearly 2 years later, I will return for a few weeks and I would like to catch up on the comics I missed.
My last issue of Kabiku: the Alchemy was number 5. I also have Reflections #5.
Please tell me about all the mack projects that have been released since.
Thank you
MACK!

Geez, No one has answered your post yet?
It's ok to talk to each other here, people :)
Feel welcome to communicate and joke, and be ridiculous.
It's ok.
Well Mr Goodman,
I've investigated your quesitons myself, and I have a certain amount of information that I hope is helpful.
There are 8 issues of Alchemy out right now. Soon to be 9!
And there are 8 issues of REFLECTIONS out too. #9 to come out later this year.
As you know The Shy Creatures picture book is coming out in September.
The big bad ALCHEMY OF ART DVD debuted this year. An artistic autistic artist like you will LOVE it.
And I've been writing some other projects, some announced, some not.
The issue of SE7EN i wrote should be out in August I think.
Maybe when you are back in USA.
Also did various covers and other works, that are included in process in the REFLECTIONS books.

Ha!
Well hopefully, I can introduce all of you to each other, and you can play games with each other, like leapfrog, and whatever...
Unless I'm just imagining all of you?

Just don't imagine me naked! (and since we've met...you KNOW that would be a very, VERY scary thing to do... :scared: )
Seems like most everyone here plays on Bendis's forum, but that place gets a tad crazy. I actually want to discuss comics, inspiration for stories, character development...ya know...the boring stuff. I seem to put people to sleep up in Bendis World...
David...I know you're a busy guy, but if you have a moment...I do have a question for ya....
Your artistic style is in so many places at once - such a wide range of talent it's amazing to me and I can't imagine so much diversity coming out of one person. Does this stuff just bubble out of you like a spring, or do you sometimes have to reach down and pull it up from a well hidden deep inside. To me it seems to just bubble out - like something that cannot be contained. That's just how it seems to me...like there's no effort at all, just a nature, unrestrained flow...

Well thanks.
My view of the way I use various approaches is that it is very calculated and thought out.
Perhaps the best way to describe it is that I work as a writer.
I'm telling a story. As a writer would carefully consider a choice in words, and syntax, and dialogue style, or if third person, or first person is a best way to tell the story... I do that, but I also use the visuals as another tool of the writing, and I consider what is the best visual way to communicate those tonalities for that particular story in the same way that I edit the word choice.
So often, I draw things in several ways, and consider several visual approaches before narrowing that down to the precise visual communication.
So does it bubble?
Maybe on the first draft. And then I do several other drafts of the writing and the art as I fine-tune the integration between them.
Much of what I do is probably more like film-editing than bubbling.
There is perhaps quite a bit of bubbling un-contained at the beginning, and then I cut and shape and sculpt and re-do that afterword.
My writing philosophy is that on the FIRST draft, write, write wriet, everything that occurs to you on pure instinct- do NOT censor yourself. Do not second guess the writing. You do not have objectivity about that on a first draft.
Just get out every single idea and instinct that you have.
And THEN-
On the NEXT dozen drafts----
Re-think, re- shape, try it in different order, try it in different persons, dif characters, change the words, slim it down, cut and edit and add and move around, etc, until you sculpt all that naked energy and raw idea into something very precise that hits the reader in the brain in just the precise spot, like you are destroying the death star.

Whoa. I could see Luke flying down the trench, fast approaching the thermal exhaust port...and Gold Five saying over and over, 'stay on target'...and everything! :D
That's a fantastic way of describing it...I can truly grasp what you are saying. A few years ago I developed hypergraphia - it lasted 4 months. I was like that - everything just flowed out (I've never been a writer). It's a wonderful feeling when you're NOT doing it for 'serious', but for fun. I didn't have to edit. *wonders how DM finds time to play on the forums...*
I still TRY to write, but now I edit, and it's not so much fun... :p I am a creative person, but I struggle to produce anything...I believe it's because I just over-think everything...the whole second-guessing thing. I also get a lot of mental blocks. Just walls that go up and won't let me do anything creative. I read a few of your other comments here about art, and it's helped me appreciate that I need to loosen up a bit.
So - by what you say it gives me the impression that you consider yourself a writer first and foremost, and an artist second? The 'storyteller' is the writer in you, and not the artist? Which do you identify with more - artist or writer?
In reading your work, I see it as a balance of the two...the art filling in the gaps left between the words. Writer/Artist - neither one is the greater, but both equals - halves of the whole. DD/Echo: VQ accomplished that perfectly...I felt the story flowed equally through both the words and the pictures. Some books I read leave me wanting more...either more written explanation, or more visual 'reaction'. But I think that's because there's usually two main creators - writer and artist - whereas with VQ you were both. Do you find it easier to work on your own like that when creating a story, or do you prefer to work with a writer to help lighten the creative load?
And as always, thanks so much for your time.

Hey Michael, welcome back! How's japan? (I've got the right Goodman, right?) How's Moonlight Dreams coming along?
David's also doing a Daredevil : End of Days miniseries with Bendis, Visuals will be delivered by legendary artists Klaus Janson, Bill Sienkewicz and Alex Maleev. I believe David may even be doing some pages/art for this too!

Wow, that's almost all my favorite comic creators collaborating together! (missing DeMatteis and Terry Moore)
My comic has taken the backseat to learning Japanese. But two years is quite a slag. I've begun to redraw the first 50 pages (on page 3) because I am not happy with their quality. I expect to finish it within 10 years. My goal is within the next ten years to have a graphic novel released in the English world.
However, my life has been so crazy that I'm almost not interested in that old story here. In Japan, I've experienced just about everything. I'm serious, life, death, attempted murder..

Maybe you should tell the story of your Japan adventures.
Since it seems that has your interest more and is more relevant to you right now.

Fair enough, being in a different environment and a different country certainly will stretch you in many directions. Keep plugging away at it though, and bit by bit it'll come together eventually.
I want to move on to other projects too, (and I have here and there started to delve into other stories and artist creations) but i really want to finish the Rally Mark one I'm currently working through.
Keep at it and maybe show us something of what happening with you now, especially now you've piqued my interest with 'attempted murder'. What the hell happened there??
Seriously you have great talent and a knack for telling stories, i'd love to see what you're producing at the moment.
Cheers,
Rob.

Honestly, I sat down and tried to write this story, but it was too painful.
The main person involved doesn't really want me to do it.
And I don't think my girlfriend is going to be happy with me spending 2 years drawing memories about the woman before her.
So, I'm going to give this some time.
But one day, it will come out. It's a true love story that ended tragically. But it will be fun to read:
forbidden sex
prevented suicide
domestic violence
attempted murder
death threats
stalking
breaking and entering
stealing legal papers
illegal use of an automobile (in order to save a life)
foreigner storming into a fancy restaurant with a bloody face asking for the police
eviction from residence
theft of child
getting back child by using the same lawyer someone else is using to sue the same man
creation of life
death
yup, still to painful to write.. one day..

A sad man thought he was King. He's a powerful man. A doctor who owns three hospitals, but his world is falling apart. He violently tries to control women (outside his marriage) and someone had to take a stand against him. And he's 190 cm (6'2)
He flipped.

That sounds like an incredible story. Might help to fictionalize it to help you get some distance. Maybe you could make a pass at writing it for someone else to draw. I can understand your concerns about your girlfriend being uncomfortable with you spending hours drawing pictures from your past with another lady, but perhaps just writing about it would make it feel less personal.

This is something I have to face myself. I intend to tell this story someday, and I told my girlfriend that before we started to date.
However, these things really did happen within the past year. It's too recent to write about. The wounds have not been healed, yet. I will finish my current project and then come back to this.
It would be hard for anyone to draw unless they lived in Wakayama. The city is a part of the story as well.
