Nope, not from the UK. But my wife is and I have spent a lot of time there in the past few years. But this will be the first time I'll be living there on a semi permanent basis.

And yes, I am going to the Chicago con. Already have my flight booked.

joesafiend, nope, never been. But there are so many places I want to check out now that I am here I'll put it on my list.

marvelboi, I still owe you a copy of the book, but I haven;t received my comps from Marvel yet. I would've bought a copy to send you but they are either sold out or ridiculously priced because they are rare. When I get my comps I'll send you one. Want it signed?

Anyhow, I am all settled in for now (will have to move again when our permanent place is actually ready) back to work and all that. Looking forward to Chicago, or rather Rosemont Con (since it's technically about 30 min out of Chicago).

See, that's just ridiculous. You know it's the stores who pick out the variants and mark them up right away to 8 times the price, not even signed or anything. Out of principle I'd never pay $20 for a book, not even the one with my art on it.

But if something is sold out and I didn't get to it in time or whatever, but I really want it bad, then I'd pay extra, and I have. I don't have anything against retailers making money, but when a product isn't even offered to the public at the cover price, that just seems wrong. I've refused to shop at stores on the principle of seeing a brand new book sealed and marked to $20 on the very day it came out.

Although I agree with you (cause I really don't want to pay that much for a book either, although I have), from the business' perspective (which I don't own one), the ratio that Marvel set up for the New Avengers variants were just ridiculous. One variant for every 20 books (give or take a couple), forcing the retailers to overstock their stores with copies of the regular issue. For the retailer, marking up the variant is their way of justifying for the amount of regular copies they had to pick up, as well as preventing the first person in the store to grab them all, and sell them on eBay.

On the retailer note, anyone know (on average) how much retailers pay for the books they order? Do they get more of a discount for the more books they order?

Adi Granov
05-25-2005, 02:50 AM
Well, yes, it can be justified that way. But I really don't think they should order any more than they usually would since they don't offer the variants to regular public anyway. But what do I know really... I guess it's just that some stores do it more fairly I think where they reserve the variants for their box customers so they both reward them and promote to other shoppers to open boxes which is good for the store. I know that that kind of attitude made a friend of mine's store a big hit, so much so that they opened a second. Shoppers, including me, are inclined to be loyal to honest shops.

But I also think that alternate covers should really be reserved for reprints or special editions (like the Director's Cut stuff) and trades. But as long as I get paid and people have money to burn on alternate covers all is well with the world. Because in the end noone is forcing anyone to buy anything.

However, that is also why I do free sketches at cons. My original art is quite expenssive and I know is out of reach for many. I know a lot of those people still buy my books and like the art so I hope at least a portion of the sketches I do end up in their hands. It's a small thank you on my part even though I might "lose out" on a few hundred bucks at a con. I think it's more than worth it to make the fans happy because in turn it will make them feel better about supporting my books. (I've stopped buying books out of principle because a creator was an asshole, I wouldn't want to come off that way myself)

There are discount tiers, but normally by company not by title. Now House of M recently had a special incentive where if you matched that order with, I think the New Avengers #1 total order including variants, then you got an extra discount. But that's not a normal thing.

I met you at last year's WW Chicago. Specifically, there was a table out on the floor with Bendis, Kirkman, and Claremont. Did I misunderstand or did you seem just as happy to meet some of those creators as fans? I think we all assume that everyone knows each other personally in comics, but in reality I guess many creators have never met before. Hope to see you again this year!

In Toronto this past April, he was looking forward to meet J. Michael Straczynski. Also, it seemed like the first time Phil Jimenez met David Mack. So, some creators never met before.

Oh, ofcourse I get excited to meet people I admire. It's been a great pleasure to become friends with some of the people I am a fan of. It goes both ways. Recently, I was VERY excited to meet Alex Ross and then it turned out he's been buying all of my work for years. It blew my mind.

That's pretty cool. I would love to visit the UK one day, funny since I work FOR UK (University of Kentucky).

I live in Lexington, Kentucky. Moving's pretty nice. It helps me reduce the clutter in my life.
