Just curious.

Past 30 seconds, I start losing it.

And underwater, the panic factor would cut that by half.

So, you're trying to gauge how long people are willing to wait for Spider-Woman, eh? ;)

Just tried. 1 and a half minutes. Out of practice though and I just got done exercising. Don't really feel like trying more though. Theres nothing worse than that feeling you are overcome with right before you have to take a breath. It's horrible.

there was an article jsut a couple weeks ago about resuscitation. basically, once the body has been without oxygen for a while, a sudden rush of oxygen actually triggers cell death. I'll have to try to dig up the link.

That was an article about dead people though. I remember reading that too. It was about figuring out a better way to treat death in the hospital. That giving them oxygen can actually be what kills them. I'm pretty sure its a different scenario.

they also mentioned underwater divers and people who held their breaths for long periods of time too though.

Yeah, but I think it has to be over 5 minutes or something extended like that.

My dad has been spear fishing for over 35 years and keeps him looking like he's still 50.

I used to be able to hold my breath for close to 2 minutes but after 15 years of smoking I'm lucky to get over a minute now.

I smoke since I was 16 and can still hold it for 2.5 minutes.

that's me. i was a lifeguard in my younger life and could hold it in the high 3's but then i started smoking and followed that with plenty of sitting on my ass and now 45 seconds would likely kill me. at least i quit smoking. cigs.

1 minute and 15 seconds, just tried.

Prolly good have gone a few seconds longer but I'm alone in my apartment, and if something went wrong my dog would start to eat my body after a few days.

When I was younger I was timed at holding my breath under water for 3 minutes and 45 seconds.

Just now I held it for 1 minute and 35 seconds.

I just stuck my head in a sink, and while water creeps into the nose differently when you're face down rather than upright, that doesn't change the fact that I only managed 30 seconds.

Just sitting in my chair, I managed one minute, four seconds exactly.

Then again, I did just eat three spicy hot dogs and am out of shape... But the numbers are the numbers.

Wow.

Maleev is like Hannibal Lector. He can get people to put their heads under water and (somewhat) endanger their lives while never moving from inside his cell.

yeah, i used to work this really boring job working in the kitchen at this bar, making wings and burgers, and i would practice holding my breath to make the time go by faster. worst job ever.

at least, until the next job when i was a baker, UGH.

I only thought about it from the Shark thread. I remembered free diving in the Barrier reefs 2 months ago. Before I went on the boat I sat on the beach and attempted to hold my breath for al long as I can to see how I'm doing.
I used to go spear fishing with my dad for years but haven't done in long time.

When I was a kid I read an article about this champion free diver guy. His deal was he goes straight down as deep as he can in one breath. He gets so deep that the ocean's pressure would literally begin to crush him. People who do what he does can hold their breath for up to 4 minutes.

I thought that was a very cool thing to be able to do, holding your breath for so long, so I started practicing breath holding at home (Not free diving. Can't swim. Oceans scare me). My best time was over 3 minutes. That was before I discovered delicious cigarettes.

Nice! 3 mins is pretty damn good.
