I've really enjoyed what Fraction has done at Marvel, so I'll be sure to check this one out.

After the devastating events of Civil War, a new superhero team has been formed by Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man) in accordance with his Fifty-State Initiative. Rising superstar writer Matt Fraction (PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL, IMMORTAL IRON FIST) and acclaimed artist Barry Kitson (Legion of Super-Heroes) introduce THE ORDER; the premier team of Director Stark's post-war agenda.
Based in Los Angeles, California's THE ORDER is comprised of a carefully selected group of actors, athletes and models imbued with incredible powers to become the First Super Hero Team of Tomorrow™. Don't let the glamorous title fool you, THE ORDER will have to face a demanding boss in Stark and the challenge of being scrutinized celebrities while fending off villains who don't realize that in Hollywood, the good guys always win!
Even if they manage to survive, there's a catch: mandatory retirement after one year. Can these young superheroes wield such tremendous powers under even more tremendous pressure? And just what is Tony Stark's mysterious agenda? Meet the men and women of THE ORDER—they've got a year to save the world and you better not get in their way!

I'm hoping to check it out. When someone mentioned how it was similar to X-Statix, that sold me.

I've got really high hopes for this book. Fraction's Marvel work has been borderline perfect so far.

Not unlike America's favorite sitcoms and the majority of our politicians. Believable for me.

Believable, yes. You think Tony'd at least TRY to appeal to the Marvel universe with some diversity though. This makes the last issue of Thunderbolts that Ellis wrote all the more depressing because he was pretty spot on.....

The colors blow the skin tones out some, so you can't quite tell from that jpg-- and the jpg only shows half the team-- but on the starting lineup of The Order there's a 6-5 male female breakdown that sees a Hispanic man and woman, an Asian man, and two black men amongst that field of lily-whiteness.
There's lots of shit for you to talk shit about, believe me, but this ain't one of 'em. Just sayin'.
(EDIT TO ADD: I try not to get tangled up in stuff like this but-- yeah, i dunno, apparently that's a button for me. It's a diverse book! IT's about Los Angeles-- how could it NOT be racially diverse? Anyway. Thanks. Hope you enjoy it.)

Can I talk shit about how this book isn't still called the Champions? That made baby angels sad when I found out the title wasn't going to stick.... :(

Well don't talk shit to US about it, we all TRIED to make it work...!
(I like THE ORDER tho. It's more fitting, somehow. Also? Our tenuous link to the Iceman/Black Widow/Ghost Rider DREAM TEAM was always tenuous at best.)

So I hear.
I'm sure I'll come to get used to it, but man my hopes were SKY HIGH that'd I be able to walk into a store and see the Champions on the new release shelf. That'd feed my inner kitsch-demons for at least 2 years.

The pages I saw at Heroes looked incredible. It's, in my humble opinion, Kitson's best work to date. The way he's drawing facial expressions is reminiscent of Kevin Maguire, and I love Maguire.
And the concept sounds great, but particularly the threats the team has to face. Giant Soviet Union bear with a rocket pack! Zombie hobos! How can you go wrong?

I *am* gonna do my best to have one of the characters discover and restore the ChampiCar.

This seems like one of the most interesting new takes on the superhero genre in a long time. Really looking forward to it. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't more excited about more Casanova, tho'... :D

Is there a nod and wink moment?
Like when a doubtful member can't believe they won a battle, he exclaims "We are the champions, my friends!" or something equally awful as that?
And anything you can do to get them into Hercules' headbands or Quasar wristbands would rock. :thumb:

There's gonna be a low-rent "team" of washed up bounty hunters, skip tracers, extreme fighters and the like that try to sue the team, claiming they were "The Order" first. That's about as meta as I care to get.

I wrote a bit where a bunch of flying Soviets were carrying a bunch of the nonflying Soviets. Barry suggested, hey, having just done LEGION for, like, ever, might I suggest that maaaaybe flying characters carrying non-flying characters might look dumb and I can improve it some? OK, says I, and Pops hits me with a bear in a goddamn rocket-pack. A RUSSIAN bear in a goddamn rocket-pack.
Is there a Nobel prize for awesome? Because Barry should win it.

I was pretty psyched for this series. I love the character designs.
Art looks great... I really like the costume designs overall, but is there some rule that all female superheroes must bare midriff? Was that something Tony snuck in the registration bill somewhere?

it was a rider someone snuck in somewhere, yeah.
I never thought I'd type this.... but God Bless Tony Stark!
It's the only way to make him a guy you can root for again. If he can push for more cleavage window shirts, too... It's really the only effective way to fight crime.
I kid and a joke (though-- really, tons of female superhero belly buttons lately)-- this book looks like it's going to be swell.

Heh heh... Yeah, I'm betting it was a tipsy Stark.

no way! he's stone cold sober.
I'm excited for this, I've lliked everything I've read from Fraction before, and the concept is interesting. Nice change of pace from the normal superhero teams.

Looks great, but I just wish they could have worked out a deal with Heroic Publishing for the rights to the name, 'Champions'.
"The Order" sounds too cold and antiseptic. It makes me think of a team of villains rather than a team of heroes.
"The Champions" sounds more positive and inspiring, and makes more sense if this is supposed to be a "media-friendly" team.
