View Full Version : Why can't I play the Wii at Best Buy?

At every Best Buy I've been to (three different ones, I think), they've got the Wii in a display case like it's a national treasure, and they don't let you play it - they have a video playing. As well as the Wii is selling, this strikes me as poor marketing to say the least. I know tons of people who bought Guitar Hero on the spot based on their experience playing it in the store, and it seems like Nintendo is leaving money on the table by not letting you play the damn thing in one of the biggest retail outlets for video games.

From what I've seen, you have to act completely spastic to play the Wii, so maybe they're worried about people breaking things or striking other customers while playing...

I imagine it would be hard to play a Wii with the wii remote and nunchuck chained to the display.

Perhaps it is something that Best Buy has done. But I have also noticed that in other stores too.

Maybe it is because of the amount of interaction that is required to play the games, and they fear for the condition of the equipment?

Yeah that's kind of reaching, but that is all I can think of. :)

I've never seen a playable Wii in a store.

I don't know about Best Buy, at EB games you have to go to the counter and give them your ID so you don't run off with the Wiimote.

It can't be such a bad marketing idea if it's selling like it is.

Nah, you're right. That's why. Nintendo couldn't figure out a way to make the controls secure enough so someone couldn't just steal them but yet still have the interactivity of the machine. It makes sense.

they don't want you to see the gamecubes taped together.

Ding! The controls would either be unusable or stolen immediately...

Just use a long chain.

Nope, some kid would choke himself. No dice.

Personally, I NEVER play the display consoles stores have. It's beyond disgusting when you see some of the gross people and little unsanity kids handling those controllers in their sweaty little palms.

When I had to clean the displays at my job, I always washed my hands HARDCORE afterwards. Much more than when I had to touch money.

A great point. When I still had a facebook, in one of my albums I put up a picture with the caption "Is there anything on Earth more germ-filled than the display Guitar Hero guitar at Best Buy?"

The whammy always seems to be busted at Best Buy GH2 demos, too.

I think the punishment of looking like a complete ass in public would likely quell the accidents.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo signed an exclusive deal with Gamestop/EB Games for in-store playable Wiis. That's why they don't have them at Best Buy, or anywhere else.
