I have a love for all comics, believe me. I also have a love for all kinds of music. I also have a love for all kinds of science fiction.
I also realize that I am becoming an old geezer, who can't accept the present and lives in the past.
With that sentiment I hope to be able to find those that are interested in discussing some of the issues that started us all on the road to being the comic book aficionados that we have become.
I started in the mid 90's with comics. I had a strict upbringing and my parents apparently read "Seduction of the Innocent" since they viewed comic books as a deterrent to me growing up to be an upstanding citizen. However, as I got older I was able to do so.
My first comics I bought at a drugstore were, X-Men 2099 #17, Spider-Man 2099 #29, X-Men #40 and Astonishing X-Men #1. These four issues started me in the world of AoA and 2099. It wasn't until much later that I was introduced to the works of Jim Starlin, and through him, Adam Warlock, Thanos, Silver Surfer, and other cosmic heroes and villains. Hence my taste in comics has always been of the cosmic kind, though I do read all kinds of comics, of all kinds of stories.
Perhaps to help put a point on my tastes, I'll list a few comics that have really kept me into collecting, and have fueled my passion to pass on my love of comics and reading (especially) to my sons.
The Age of Apocalypse (all the comics that were involved in that)
Watchmen
Batman: The Killing Joke
Cosmic Odyssey
Power of Warlock
Dreadstar
Thanos Quest
Infinity Gauntlet
Silver Surfer (Vol.1)
Silver Surfer (Vol. 2) #34-50 (were some of the best)
Incredible Hulk (Joe FixIt issues)
Thor (Walt Simonson run)
Spider-Man (the J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck story with Kraven)
That's just a few off the top of my head . . . I don't want to get long winded here.
So if you would like, share some of the things that you like to pull out of your longboxes (or shelves for those that collect TBP) that bring back fond memories and new reasons for your love for comics.

I've been wanting to re-read Simonson's Thor and Byrne's FF a lot lately.
Also Byrne's complete Next Men.
I would love to re-read Stern's Amazing run with JRJR...but I don't have all the issues anymore (Jen this seriously needs to be in trade more than his Spectacular run).
Oh...also Superman/Batman Generations 1, 2 and 3...I guess I've just been in a Byrne mood lately...might as well add in his Alpha Flight run too.

I forgot of the Superman/Batman series as well. Just a few weeks ago I read the World's Finest Batman/Superman from Karl Kesel and Dave Taylor.
The Byrne run of FF was one of the best. I love the cosmic tales that Byrne wrote in those issues.

Spiderman circa the clone saga was when I started reading. I have just about all of the back issues and I have read it twice, both in a small number of sittings.) Most people don't like it, but I do.
AOA was bad ass too. I read that in one sitting once I finally got all of the issues a couple years back.
I don't read comics older than the early 90's. They just suck to me. :dunno:

I wasn't a fan of the Clone Saga. Granted I bought all the comics are read them all, but it's not something I like to admit, because I felt duped at the end.
AoA however, is still one of the BEST X-Men stories to date, in my opinion.

What got me started:
The first stuff I ever read was Archie's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures in the late eighties.
My first foray into superhero stuff was Batman, just before Knightfall, and the 2099 line at Marvel. This was soon followed by X-Men and the Age of Apocalypse. I came into Spider-Man just at the beginning of the Clone Saga and Superman right after they killed him.
To this day, all those storylines hold a dear spot in my heart.

I really miss the 2099 Universe too. I thought that it was great, and never understood why they ended it (other than if the sales were low). Plus X-Men 2099 introduced me to Ron Lim's art, who has always been a favorite of mine.

I like long boxes more than short boxes, although the short boxes are easier on the back, I just like the look of row upon row of neatly sorted and cataloged long white boxes, stretching out like little coffins for the detritus of my life, cradling them in long-boxy goodness against those long winter nights when...
oh, were we not talking about long boxes?

I like long boxes, too, but I think I like my filing cabinet even more. It's so handy. If only I had the money to buy some more.
That's what I'm thinking, too.
And I respect other folk's opinions and all (and, sure, some of the older stuff might be deemed--oh--Hokey--to a Modern Type Person/Younger Person/What Have You) but, man...so much good stuff going sooo far back.
Some of my earliest faves (from my youth):
Avengers Volume One: I got in at issue 158 forward (and, eventually, I went as far back as the 90s or so of that run) to about 200 and something. Great fun.
Uncanny X-men: Claremont/Byrne/Paul Smith/Dave Cockrum. Granted, in my last go through of this series, I did cringe slightly at the Over-Wordiness of ol' Chris, but you can't deny this series its place in the history of comics
Legion of Superheroes: Levitz/Giffen. Fuck, man...great stuff (especially the Great Darkness Saga)
Daredevil: Frank Miller
Thor: Walt Simonson
New Teen Titans: Wolfman/Perez
Fantastic Four: JB
Mage AND Grendel: Matt Wagner
Grimjack: Ostrander/Truman
Nexus: Baron/Rude
American Flagg: Chaykin
Badger, Cerebus, Swamp Thing, Sandman, and on and on and on (and, sure, some of these series continued into the 90s...)
I mean,
C'mon.

I came close to trying the Marvel Knights 2099 until I heard the same thing, then it became of no interest to me.
I got the whole Doom 2099 series out of a $1 box at a comic shop. I don't think that 2099 was ever really appreciated. Spider-Man 2099 was to me almost a better Spider-Man. Though that may cause some drama, I liked the lack of "soap opera" in Spidey 2099 compared to Marvel U's Spidey. But then that was at the time of the Clone Saga, and I just got burned on that. Just my opinion, a lot of people liked it.
I had forgotten about Rick Leonardi. He did Spidey 2099 right? Also I can remember the artists, but I liked the art in Hulk 2099 too.

Heh. My first thoughts went to the classic Avengers (from when Beast joins on up for a good while), Claremont's X-run, and the Wolfman/Perez Titans. You're right about Claremont's dialogue, though. It didn't bother me near as much as a kid, for some reason.

Yeah, Leonardi was the penciler on Spidey 2099. As for Hulk, it was Malcolm Davis. I wasn't a huge fan, though.

I also liked the few issues Starlin did in Daredevil too, with Moondragon in them. Didn't seem like the place to put her in with Daredevil, but he made it work great.

I think my 2099 stuff is easily among my most re-read comics.

There was a Justice League issue of some kind (can't seem to remember which title, I believe it was an annual or special) that I remember reading that was just totally fun. I can't even remember the villians name, but he was purple, and he was a trickster type villian playing jokes on the heroes.
The whole issues was just hilarious. That's the kind of stuff that keeps me going back to the longboxes more than the shelves.
Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man
starting with The Death Of Jean Dewolff storyline- PAD's 1st comic stuff and going on for about the next 15-20 issues is awesome.
Most of it is PAD,with a few fill-in issues here and there.
Lots of Black Cat, Dr. Strange- as a matter of fact, its here that Dr. Strange fucks with Black Cat's "bad luck" abilities.
Great stuff, among the first I read as a kid.

Missing as in Stolen.
Any number of the bevy of Plookers double-parking their respective Donks on my sister's assback are suspects.
This was years and years ago and I did not take note of their disappearance until many years later when I retrieved the various long boxes from storage at my 'rents (once I had a home of my own and the room to store them myself).

I've been going mega-retro since my shop has opened a $1 back issue room upstairs.
Essentially, I'm buying back my childhood collection, since that's long, long gone. Most of the stuff I've been buying is from '79 to '86, the time of my life (age 4-11) were comics absolutely consumed me.
Just yesterday I picked up tons of Power Man & Iron Fists, Miller and O'Neil Daredevils, some Marvel Conans, and Squadron Supreme.
Think I've bought about 200 issues in the last couple of weeks, everything from All-Star Squadron, Alpha Flight, Avengers, Blue Beetle, Fantastic Four, G.I. Joe, Incredible Hulk, Marvel Star Wars, Transformers and the bulk of the run of Strikeforce:Morituri...which is strange because I never read the book growing up, but figured at the price, it'd be cool to have an almost complete run of a series.
I'm liking the "file cabinet" boxes. I've bought one and will be getting many more. So much easier pulling the drawer out to see your comics and not having to physically move 10 longboxes to reach one at the bottom.
I've been meaning to pick up that run for some time now. I'm not sure why I've yet to get around to it.

I've no problem with wordy. ;-)
The Amazing Spidey stuff from that period is quite the tits as well.
The "Gang War" arc, with the Rose aka Richard Fisk, and Punisher...Defalco be da man. Too bad they pulled him off the book before the storyline wrapped, but Owsley/Priest finished up nicely.
Mid to late 80's spidey titles = comic book gold

That's the only issue I have of the series at the present. I had never read them before. I bought a friend of mine's only longbox full of old comics that he didn't want anymore (reminds me of Clint about old comics) for super cheap and that was in there. But having read it recently has sparked an interest to get the rest.

Gotta love the $1 boxes. I visited a sports card shop with my brother in law when he was visiting, and I remember picking up a long box about half full or so of comics he still had there. Almost 150 comics for $75. Got some misc X-Men, a lot of Captain Atom, Suicide Squad, and misc Batman books.

Yeah I liked the Mowhawk Storm too, in a different way. I have a weakness for women with long hair, so naturally that would appeal. However I still have not forgiven Halle Berry for that weak performance of a goddess.

From what I remember they were good. Granted that was 10 years ago . . .
It's a short series though. I guess it just didn't catch on then. For me it really reminded me of Troublemakers from Accliam Comics which ran around the same time, and last about the same amount of issues.
It seemed to me that it was attempting to appeal to girls. That's just my perception. But I liked both the series.

I know, I had a friend in high school that was one of those exclusive Marvel buyers. I never understood that. It's not like we are talking beer here, any comic that is a good read is worth buying no matter the publisher.
Let me guess they were all Image? :) I kid. I own quite a few Image. Especially WildC.A.T.S. I really liked that series. At least the issues that had the original team.

I remember looking through my dad's old comics as a kid. I never really read any of them. Just looked at the pictures. He was into the war comics big time. Some that he had were Unknown Soldier, Weird War (most the covers scared the shit out of me) , GI Combat, Sgt. Rock. Most are from the 70's. Still have them. I personally got started in the 90's with McFarlane's Spider-Man Torment & Atlantis Attacks crossover stuff. Then I stopped till about 2001 when JR Scherer let me borrow the Preacher series . I was hooked. 1st 'new' comic I bought was the Daredevil .25 cent issue followed by the Smith/Hester Green Arrow series.

Mostly Earth X and Earth X related stuff. The guy had a huge hard on for Alex Ross. So much so he turned me off to Alex Ross stuff for years. The best was when he came in and asked about the Wonder Twins Ross/Dini special. His wife was with him. I had to "break" the news to him that it was a Wizard April Fool's joke.

Why don't the Wonder Twins have their own series? That would be a great fun series . . . ala Deadpool. Now that is a great ass fun character there.

My friend is a huge Deadpool fan. Use to read the comic all the time. I really like issue 11 with Deadpool traveling back in time and gawking at Gwen Stacy.

War comics are about the only thing that I never really have tried.
McFarlane's Spider-Man looked awesome. But I always felt that when he writes there is always something going on (action) but nothing really happens (story progression), if that makes sense.
I did like the Hobgoblin storyline though. I'll admit that was good. The X-Force/Spider-Man issues (the whole comic was writing horizontally) were good too. I did like McFarlane's quips for Spider-Man when he was fighting.

I like the first mini that Ian Churchill drew (I love his art) and how Deadpool was always hitting on Syrn, while Banshee was always giving him the evil eye.

Comics that really fueled my imagination and sparked my love for the medium include all things John Byrne (FF, Marvel Team-Up, X-Men, Superman, etc.) Frank Miller's Daredevil, Denny O'Neil & Denys Cowan's The Question, Jim Stralin's Dreadstar (then I went back and discovered his Warlock and Captain Marvel work), Wolfman & Perez's Teen Titans, Levitz & Giffen's Legion of Super-Heroes, Stern & JRJR's Amazing Spider-Man and so much more.

I really think that most of Starlin's best work was his own. While I totally obsess with Thanos and Warlock, I like Dreadstar, Gilgamesh II, Breed, Wyrd, and Cosmic Guard.
His rendering of Warlock was incredible. Captain Marvel was never more moving then in The Death of Captain Marvel. To die of something so common despite his cosmic powers. And then to have Thanos visit Marvel on his deathbed. The man really knew how to write comics.

I also forgot about the great Thanos/Drax back story in this issue of Logan's Run. Which ironicly got me to read the whole Logan's Run series as well.

It was just an adaptation of the movie. Which I never did watch after reading the comic. But that is what I was informed that it was.

Is it like a Blade Runner type story, or is it more galactic like Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica?
Reminds me to dig out my Marvel Star Wars comics too. I haven't read them in a long time.

I remember this issue from a ways back of Fantastic Four. To me this run of Claremont's was vastly confusing to me. While I admit that a lot of me buying the issues was for Larrocca's art (pure heaven), I never did fully grasp if Her's apperance just happen to be like a female version of Him (Adam Warlock) or if there was suppose to be some connection.
I've re-read this storyline many times, and still seem to be confused as to what Claremont was trying to insinuate.
