Explain HALO to the non-gamer, pls

I look at the solicits and see "art by Alex Maleev" and it's pretty much a given, but what the hell is HALO? From what I glean on the 'net, it's a violent shoot-em-up, but there has to be more to it than that - who are the people? What's the story?

alright so pretty much humans are colonizing all over the universe and the aliens, called the Covenant, started a war with them and are going around trying to destroy all the human settlements. The main character Master Chief is part of a group of cyborg soldiers called Spartans. I think Master Chief is the last living Spartan, the rest have died in the war.

thats all i can remember off the top of my head, its pretty much just an alien invasion story.
