I know this is mostly an american filled forum but still, what's everyones views on this? I'm happy since whenever I'm at arcades playing DDR I run out of stamina because most of the air has smoke in it. Thank god for the smoking ban.

Public smoking really has no place in a civilized world. If I'm not allowed to take a shit in the middle of a restaurant dining room, why should someone be allowed to smoke?

I hate this anti-smoking nonsense. If we want to go after stuff that harms our well being and health please go ahead and close down every stinkin' McDonalds restaurant and KFC there is first. More people are dying from obesity related diseases than cigarette related diseases.
If people want to smoke they should be allowed to smoke. I'm seeing cigarette boxes that have labels like "Smoking this pack will kill two babies!" WTF? I think we're getting close to the reality of that Bill Hicks joke in which he says that under new laws people will only be sold cigarettes if the clerk you buy it from slaps you across the face.
This insane power trip needs to end.
Oh and I don't smoke but I think if people do then they should be able to do it whenever they want without someone else coming into their space and telling them to put it out. This has really gone too far.

KFC doesn't give off a toxic gas while people are eating it. It is a health detriment to only the person eating it.

There is no violin small enough for their plight.

My point is if the government actually cares about our well being and have decided they know better than we do about our well being then they should shut down junk food restaurants because so many people are getting fat and getting heart problems from it.
And as for toxic fumes go? There have to be more toxic fumes in just the air we breathe than come out of a single cigarette. And if they really want to cut down on toxic fumes then go ahead and get rid of cars and bikes as well and hand out bicycles to everyone. Hell that'll solve two problems at once... cut down toxic fumes that cause asthamatic problems for thousands as well as make fatties lose weight.
You're not specifically taxed on shitting either. But you are taxed on food.

Can't we work to cut down on EVERYTHING that negatively affects our health? And since the government (and other organizations and people) are are trying to cut down pollution from other sources (like cars) and are trying to get people to eat less fast food and eat more healthy food, your point is kind of moot.
Bill Hicks died because of pancreatic cancer...
Early onset of which has been clinically linked to smoking...
But I'm sure it had nothing to do with it.
My point is if the government actually cares about our well being and have decided they know better than we do about our well being then they should shut down junk food restaurants because so many people are getting fat and getting heart problems from it.
Well, your point is irrelevant. Smoking is being banned in public places because it presents an unreasonable health risk to the people surrounding the smoker, not the smoker itself. Fast food, however detrimental it is to health, can at least be eaten without poisoning the people surrounding the smoker at the same time. The government can't really protect people from themselves, but it can protect us from each other.
Actually, cigarettes are worse then cars are for health. A smoke-filled room is fifteen times more toxic than the EPA's upper limit for outdoor air pollution. Furthermore, nobody who drives a car gets their kicks from backing it into a crowded room and letting the exhaust run, which is pretty much what smokers get to do every day with impunity.

Actually recent laws in the UK ban companies from advertising junk food to children and the fast food companies are also in there sights. The smoking debates been going on for a while and since Blair wants a legacy he supported it and the converatives went all green so they supported it to to play to the image. The law has public backing so say what you want to but the point is'nt "Smoking is bad so let's ban it" it's "the public backs a smoking ban"

Yeah, even as an off again on again smoker, I am still for this. In Oregon, they tried banning smoking everywhere, which lasted about a month. The loop hole was that as long as there were video poker machines then it would be considered a 'lounge' and could be allowed.
I do believe there should be some places where it is still allowed. "Bars, dedicated sections, etc.) But on the whole, restaurants, arcades, or any place where minors may be allowed should be smoke free. As the majority is non smokers, and reformed smokers, they should not be subjected to what is really a bad habbit.

And he kept on smoking until he was physically able to while he had cancer.
He fought and made fun of non-smokers till the last set he was able to perform before he died.
He knew it was what gave him cancer. It's a personal choice he made to smoke and he knew the risks of smoking as many packs a day that he did. He lived and died knowing and accepting the choice he had made.
If I start smoking tomorrow and get cancer I will die knowing that I made this choice and it's obvious I can't blame the tobacco companies.. It was my choice to make and other people making the choice to not allow me to smoke is just a different kind of moral policing.

I like your thinking, but that will just create a huge underground market for cigarettes. The trick is to tax cigarettes at the sweet spot where you can maximize revenue while not creating enough incentive for an underground market.

That, I feel is not necessary. If people want to kill themself, and they are ok doing it in designated areas, let them. Taxes, while a deterent, are only going into government pockets and are not really doing a damn bit of good.
There are thousands of vices that are just as bad, just more subtle, that are allowed to go free with no undue taxes and media related crucifixation. Ban it in public places, make sure non smokers are not directly affected by it, and call it good.

People bitch all the time about smoking.
Seriously, I'm sick of it. It's bad for you! OK, got ya. It leads to cancer! So does practically everything we put in our bodies. The secondhand smoke bothers my sinuses! Well, your constant bitching about everything everyone else does is really starting to bother me.
You don't like smoking? That's fine, it's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. But you're NOT entitled to tell me what I can and can't do. You don't think smokers should be allowed to smoke in a restaurant? I actually agree with you. But to say I can't smoke outside?
That's fucking retarded. You see all that sky everywhere? Yeah, that's where my smoke is going. Not directly over to you when you're ten feet away, and not down into your lungs to instantly cause secondhand smoke induced cancer.

When this was introduced in Scotland a while back it was enormous deal, all over the news. That is, until it came into force and, it seemed, no one cared. It was extremely interesting, sociologically, how quickly the population acquiesed and adapted.
Personally, while I absolutely HATE stinking of smoke when I come home from the pub, don't like my eyes stinging of smoke, don't like the smell and think smoking is unutterably stupid, I'll admit to being slightly uncomfortable with the government banning it in public places. I like to think of the businessman who invested all his time, money and effort into running a pub, likes his customers to be able to smoke and whose staff joined the business knowing that it involved contact with smokers. Is it fair to him to dictate how his business should be run? Even if he put huge neon signs reading 'WARNING: YOU WILL BE EXPOSED TO SECOND-HAND SMOKE IF YOU ENTER', he would still not be allowed to permit his customers to light up in his pub. I don't doubt for one second that second hand smoke is a detriment to health - only true nutters would these days. I just don't think we should be forbidden from doing it simply because it is. I knew the risks from second hand smoke when I entered smoking pubs. To me, it sets a precedent that the government can interfere on our behalf to stop us from dangers that we are fully aware of. And I'm not entirely comfortable with that.
But God! I love the new non-smoking pubs in Scotland!
I'm looking forward to this, when I probably get a job at a bar or a pub then i won't have to live with smoke every night.

Smoking has been banned in all bars, clubs, and other public places in Nova Scotia for a few years now, and thank God.
Interestingly, the bar business actually increased within a few months of the ban, despite the earlier outcry of bar owners that this would destroy their establishments. They failed to account for the 70% of the population that doesn't smoke. One bar did close citing the ban as a reason, but they had willfully defied the ban and incurred $10,000 penalties on multiple occasions, so that economic impact was kind of self-inflicted.
Happy to hear about the England ban, I want to live over there for a few years and this will make that easier.

It's not really the banning of cigarettes that I don't like. Banning smoking in some enclosed public places is fine.
What I really don't like is this demonising of smokers that's going on like they're rapists or child molesters. It kinda makes them out to be some kind of evil demons sent from a hell dimension with an agenda to kill the human race by making them cough to death. When really if you're in an enclosed public place where a person is smoking and it bothers you all you need to do is tell said person that it bothers you and most people are decent enough to put their cigarettes out. And if you're in a place like a restaurant or bar where a majority of people are smoking and it bothers you... you can just you know... go someplace else...
I don't understand why they're being portrayed as these kind of hellish creatures that are bent on killing us all with their tarry breath of death. They're people like you and me and they've got it worse because they've been hooked onto it through addictive substances and they've got a greater chance of getting a disease than you do by standing near them.
I'm not trying to make them look sympathetic because they made that choice knowing the consequences but all I'm saying is this seems like needling them with a stick while they're coughing up blood on the carpet and laughing at the stain because it kinda looks like a cigarette.
Maybe it's good that people are taking action and becoming aware of the dangers of smoking but I think blanket banning like the way they're doing is ridiculous and if anything will make smoking more attractive for adolescents who are looking for the next taboo thing to do.

However, the second it gets to the point of outdoor smoking bans of any kind(see city parks), either shit or get off the pot. Outlaw them, or don't.

Here in Syracuse the smoking ban went into affect a few years ago, and I couldn't have loved it more!! Actually being able to go home after a night at the bar and not have to immediately put my clothes in the washing machine!! But, I found that there were a few bars that would turn their heads at smoking, so, it's still going to happen. But I do agree that trying to ban smoking outdoors is just ridiculous. I believe that this year at the Great New York State Fair, there will be no tobacco advertisers. No handrolled cigars, no place to buy cigarettes, no place to get free chew, nothing. And you can't even smoke in the fairgrounds. Oh, and some other thing that the carnies HAVE to wear shirts. Things are getting weird around here. Carnies wearing shirts? Blasphemy!!

That's cool. It's been in effect here in New York for a while and I think it's great. There are a few bars that break the rule, but most don't.
Maybe it's because I don't smoke, but I really don't see why so many people find the need to act like they're being totally inconvenienced when bars and restaurants make them do it outside. Smoking is an inconvenience to those around you. It affects the health of others.

the main issue i have with smoking bans is the fact that it is government control. we are supposed to live in a capitalist society, where the market rules. if we ban smoking, we relieve businesses of the right to deal with who they want.
what should happen is, all the people that can't stand smoking refuse to go to places where smoking is allowed. the business then loses money, and can determine if it should ban smoking to bring back that money, or decide it didn't hurt the bank too much.
unfortunately, what really happens is a bunch of whiners get together and cry until they get what they want.
i do believe cigarettes are harmful- to me, to people around me. but... i believe there are worse things. look at your attire someday. where were all the clothes made? were they made in a sweatshop? what about bananas? the majority of bananas we eat are grown with fertilizers that kill little children that pick the bananas for us to eat. you gonna stop eating them? you going to wait for a government ban?
others eating crap food does affect me, as well. the portion of the burgers that actually is meat is meat from cows that were fed growth hormones. those growth hormones are in the meat, which travel into the fatass consumer, which urinates/shits it into the water supply, i drink water(yes, i realize that i dont drink sewage, but the water is all the same, people...) now these growth hormones are in my body, in the body of my offspring...

I believe smokers should be allowed to slowly and painfully kill themselves in whatever manner befits them. Big Tobacco performs a vital function in our society. It thins the herd and fulls people from the human race with no sense of self preservation.
Let me get this straight. Someone wants to inhale smoke intentionally, crisp their lungs and inject one of nature's most deadly and painful poisons intentionally into their bloodstream in short vapor bursts. The side effects including weakened health, hypertension, enormously painful cancer and eventual gruesome and ignoble death. And it'll be their own fault?
Stupid people have found a way to off themselves in some awful fashion and are willing to fight to preserve their right to do so?
I'm sorry... I fail to see the problem. You want to get rid of smoking, two easy steps. REAL easy.
1. No more fucking smoke breaks.
Okay. Yeah I don't smoke and I don't like it when people smoke around me. Eat me, I'm allergic and it makes me sneeze my damn head off when someone's spouting secondhand into the air like a dirty engine. I'm not doofy enough to do something I KNOW is going to give me terminal illness.
So why are the people doofy enough to do so rewarded with 5 extra minutes on the end of lunch for a coffin nail? If I walked off to do something I just WANTED to do at work, someone would look sharply in my direction and go "Why aren't you working? Get back to work."
But if I'm a smoker I get a break every couple of hours to just go sit and smoke up? I'm allergic and I'm getting fucking jipped! If I decided to addict myself to masturbation, could I have breaks to go and yank my crank in the men's room or something? Much healthier in the long run too!
So any time I hear smokers complaining they're being discriminated against? Fuck you. Fuck you a lot. You get all kinds of considerations I don't just cos you need to go light one up sometimes. Tell ya what. The last time someone blew smoke in my direction from the smoking section in a denny's? I turned around and sneezed on their eggs.
2. NO INSURANCE.
The insurance industry would jump on this in a moment if they could get away with it. Are you kiddin' me? I mean if someone commits suicide, their survivors get no payoff on their life insurance. That wasn't misadventure. They did that to themselves! You get nothing!
If Life Insurance, why not Health Insurance? Why should the un-stupid people that don't inhale that shit intentionally have to pool in their premiums on the behalf of these cancer junkies? (Oh what? Too mean? They're chasing after cancer right? They need a periodic fix of fresh carcinogens right?)
A bunch of smokers probably go: "I LIKE smoking and fuck you, *I* have insurance. When I need a trach tube or a triple bypass or the lungs of some donor so I can KEEP smoking with a fresh pair, *I* can afford it." Raising taxes on the cigs isn't gonna do shit. It's called addiction. Whatever the price is gonna be, they're gonna PAY it. They can pay for that NOW.
Hit em with NO benefits for an illness proven to be caused by their cigarette smoking? That shit'll stop real quick. Show em a bum that can barely breathe and have him talk through Ned's Southpark Cancer Kazoo to a camera. "hi.i.used.to.smoke.a.pack.a.day. under.new.laws.since.i.did.this.to.myself, I.had.to.pay.my.medical.bills.out.of.pocket. I.lost.my.house.my.car.my.things. everything." Show a before and after photo too. That'll scare the SHIT out of the marlboro men.
Okay. Going to bed. I don't know what brought this rant on. Good on england for doing that. One more reason I want to renounce my US citizenship and emigrate.

Another Bill Hicks joke :
I got some news to tell you tonight.. to non-smokers... oh I gotta tell you this because I know you don't know this and it's a fact... non-smokers you ready? Drum roll............ Non-Smokers die every day! I know you non-smokers entertain some kind of eternal life fantasy. Remember when Yul Brenner had a commercial out after he died that said "I'm Yul Brenner and I'm dead now cause I smoked cigarettes." then he urged people not to smoke. But.... they could have made the same commercial with that health nut Jim Fixx who wrote a book on jogging. "I'm Jim Fixx and I'm dead now... I dunno how the fuck it happened... I ate the right food... jogged every day of my life... swam 500 laps every morning and I'm dead. Yul Brenner drank, smoked and got laid every night of his life.. Yul Brenner's chainsmoking, drinking, 15 year old girls sitting on his cueball nogin every night of his life.. I'm running around a dewey track at the crack of dawn and we're fucking both dead.... Goddammit!!"

And soon, no drinking, and no talking.

As long as Ireland exists, this will never happen :shifty:

And I'm just sayin'... long as Ireland exists, he'll be wrong.
Someone should do something about that.... soon as I'm able to leave :shifty:
Just one little red button pushed and *poof* Izzard is right.

More Bill Hicks :
Tell you, the worst kind of non-smokers' the kind where you're smoking and they just walk up to you … [starts coughing in the naggy-I-want-you-to-stop kinda' cough] I always say, "Shit, you're lucky you don't smoke. That's some cough you got there, dude. I'm smoking, you're coughing. Wow." That's kind of cruel, man, going up to a smoker and coughing. Shit! Do you go up to crippled people dancing too, you fucks? "Hey, Mr. Wheelchair. What's your problem? Come on ironside, race ya!"
It is hard to quit smoking. Every one of them looks pretty good to me right now. Every cigarette looks like it was made by God, rolled by Jesus and moistened shut with Claudia Schiffer's pussy right now.
Non-smokers die every day. Sleep tight!

Smoking bans are just fine by me, but I have a hard time with the self righteousness of some of the anti-smoking factions.
What about the self righteousness of some of the pro-smoking factions?

It's my opinion?

And what about the poor self-esteem of some of the anti-smoking factions?

If I were clever or if I liked puns, I'd make a awesome joke here about something like, "...up in smoke."

I am all for a smoking ban!
As long as they legalize marijuana in it's stead, that is.
Oh. They're not?
Then fuck stupid smoking bans!
