“Hey, you work in comics. Have you seen SPIDER-MAN 3 yet?”
“Hell, I haven’t seen SPIDER-MAN 2 yet.”
“But… you work in comics.”
“You work in a supermarket. Have you tasted that new brand of dogfood I saw advertised on the tv the other day? No? Then fuck off.”

Yeah, I dig Ellis but his need to incessantly display his disdain for mainstream superhero properties can be irritating at times. I realize that most of his time is taken up by cool, edgy shit like writing dark fiction, drinking, and polishing his witty, internet repartee...but it's hard for me to believe that a guy who has done as much mainstream comic work as he has wouldn't be curious enough about a film like Spiderman 2 to pop it into his DVD player on some random, boring Tuesday night.

He's Warren Ellis... he probably doesn't have random, boring Tuesday nights. And not just because he might be communicating with Alien energy beings from another dimension using a busted tv antenna and a tin-foil hat.. but because the guy is probably the busiest and one of the most prolific writers around. He's writing novels, comic books, articles and god only knows what else. And whenever he's not writing he's probably reading or doing research for his next novel, comic book, article or whatever he's got going on in that weird brain of his.
So I can totally see Warren Ellis not giving a fuck about some movie about a guy in a spandex suit whining about why he can't get laid or get money.

Therefore he is not as indiscriminate as you think. He is known for his disdain for most superhero comics, after all. A shame because he does them so well.
But if Spider-Man 2 was a hard science fiction take on the superpowers thing, I'm pretty sure he'd watch it in a heartbeat.

warren ellis writes comics, he doesn't have anything to do with films, spider-man or the mainstream in general. so whoever expects him to have seen spider-man 2 doesn't really have a clue who he is or what he does (or that a love of comics does not equal a love of all things superhero).
i mean you all love this, like, superhero stuff right? so you should have all seen superman 3, right? and like, love it up, right?

Well, Ellis can get away with not caring about Spider-Man 3 if he so wishes, it's not as if he's ever worked on the character or shown any urge to. If it was "Nextwave: The Movie", maybe they'd have a point.
People have been asking me for my opinions on the film frequently too, but since he's my favourite super-hero character and I did in fact see the film on the first Saturday, it's probably fair enough.

:blah:
No. Not his interests but his supposed disdain for certain aspects and areas of the comic book reading community and industry. The whole, "I'm Warren Ellis and I'm rude and angry 24/7 and I punch kittens before before breakfast, I hate comic book fans!" as someone already put it, "shtick." It's an act. The act has even been alluded to as much by other creators. Yes, he has different interests and in fact my very own interests happen to be more in line with those of Mr. Ellis, in fact I don't disagree with is assessment of Spider-Man 3, but the "hate" is an act.

Is he seriously still going with the "superheroes suck" shtick?
I think he's just playing off the general 'assumption' that everyone in comics eats, drinks and sleeps superheroes. I certainly don't. Plenty of superhero films I haven't seen and plenty of superhero comic history that I'm clueless about because I've only read a handful of books. But everyone I know that knows I do comics constantly asks me about the superheroes.
"Hey, what'd you think about what happened in 52?"
"You think Captain America is really dead?"
"You think that new Ghost Rider film should have been more like the comics?"
"When are you going to do some work for a 'real' comic publisher?"
"Are you going to be excited when you get "the call"?"
It comes with the territory since the superheroes are so dominant in the industry. But really, it can get frustrating at times when so many fans consider 'indy' comics to be a farm team for Spiderman.

If it's an act, it carries over into his in-person persona, because from the few minutes I've spent with Warren almost ten years ago, he's exactly like this, even when he thinks no one is listening or being entertained.
I haven't seen Spiderman 3 either, nor X-Men 2, nor Ghost Rider or Constantine or Catwoman or Daredevil or Elektra or 300 or etc etc etc...and I still love comics and superheroes. But I prefer my superheroes in comics, and don't really like Hollywood interpretations of them.

I work in comics. Damn near full time now. And I haven't seen it and I'm not rushing out to see it. I don't have a contempt for super heroes -- hell, I'm writing super hero book pretty soon -- but I don't feel a NEED to see it. Not compelled by any means. Maybe if the reviews were better, maybe if I'd have enjoyed the first 2 a little more -- I don't dislike them, I just, as a writer, have a hard time enjoying those films when their weakest ingredient is the writing. I think every aspect of them is pretty great, but guess what I focus on? Point is that, while we all have our different reasons, I completely understand where Ellis coming from.
And Kody's dead on. I was once fucking around on Bendis' myspace page, telling him how much I loved his Y The LAst Man, when some guy attacked me and tried to insult me because all I had done in his opinion was written "Angel comics". Seemingly, if I don't write Marvel or DC I'm fodder for ridicule.

If John Byrne gave that kind of response to a reasonable question there'd be a different reaction from people.
Honey, John Byrne did give a response to a "reasonable" question like that, more than once, and it was a pointless rant, deserving of disdain. Because, Byrne commits the cardinal sin of internet fanboys -- whining about something he hasn't actually seen or ever intends to see. And doing so using hate-filled and narrow-minded rhetoric.
Whether Warren Ellis sees a super hero movie or not should not be any of our business. I really don't care what Ellis thinks about anything in his private life -- I read his fiction. Period. But since Mr. Ellis chose to make a public statement, and since he chose to make a subtle dig at the two Spider-Man films (because he is a brilliant but slightly-malevolent word-smith and nothing he says is accidental), I'm going to be a hypocrit and point out that, he too committed the cardinal sin of internet fanboys. He was making a subtle dig at two films that he has never actually seen. I don't like it when anyone does that. In any case, he was responding to a question that implied he had to see a super hero movie because he works in the business.
Warren Ellis has an asshole and an opinion. As the saying goes. He's entitled to his. You-all are entitled to yours. I happen to think that Spider-Man 2 was one of the best films of recent years. I have not yet seen Spider-Man 3.
The problem is when internet fans elevate the opinions of a writer into the sayings of a cult-leader ... "Internet Jesus" -- good grief. I'm sure Ellis loves every bit of this thread, too. I find his attitudes and his posts irritating as hell, sometimes. But a lot of people find me irritating as hell, too. What I find scary is the way fanboys worship every piece of poo a particular writer or aritist drops in a message or blog; it's up to the writer to either squelch that kind of behavior in fans, or whip it to a froth, like Warren Ellis loves to do.
In other words, you're the ones who make what Ellis says matter. He's going to say what he wants, even if no one is listening or reading.

I don't get why so many people seemingly just can't wrap their minds around the fact that Ellis just isn't into superheroes. And yes, he writes them, of course he writes them, it's what pays best in the industry at the moment. If it was trashy romance, well you're damned sure he'd be writing about someone's throbbing, hard member and an intense, aroused look in another someone's face right now. Wouldn't mean he'd go out of his way to read the stuff in his spare time (which seems almost nonexistent at this point, going by Bad Signal).

No, I'm just saying that I'd love to see him focus that razor sharp wit ON the subject at hand, rather than on why he hasn't or won't see it. He has a brilliant and sharp intellect. I'm just saying I'd like to read his actual reaction if he had seen the movie.

What's wrong with answering "No" when asked if you've seen Spider-Man 3? Answering "I haven't even seen Spider-Man 2" seems to be a little accusatory about the pretty standard practice of going to see a film and an attempt to point out just how outside the mainstream and independent he is.
I'm not terribly familiar with this Mr. Ellis but I certainly know lots of people who roll their eyes when asked if they deigned to listen to the latest band that is no longer cool because they're so popular.

I honestly don't care what movies or comics Ellis likes or doesn't like. I just think he's a bit of a poser who's milking a tired shtick for all it's worth. There's no good reason for someone who's as deeply entrenched in the worlds of pop culture and mainstream comics as he is to get snippy because a comic fan assumed he would have some interest in a Spiderman movie.
Also, I find it kinda perplexing that comic fans, who eat up a lot of the stuff he continually shits all over, are ready to e-fellate him every time he makes comments like these.
"Yeah! He just trashed my favorite comic! Praise Internet Jesus!"
I don't get it. It's not something I get angry over...but it doesn't make me want to heap praise on the guy, either.

My sarcasm aside, I really don't care if anyone insults what I read or like. I'm secure enough in my taste to enjoy what I enjoy regardless. If you look at this board there's many many people who didn't like Spider-man 3 and have trashed it, who cares if Warren Ellis makes a pretty innocent jab at it?
I'll work my entire life to live by the standard of Keith, btw. :)

It's not Ellis' insults that is being taken to task so much as his transparently fake spider jerusalem persona.
He used to be a pretty okay humble guy on his old message board before he started playing spider to fanboy acclaim.

Well, that's the persona he choses to put out there in his Bad Signal mailer. It's pretty upfront about the type of stuff he says in those. Over time I wasn't really interested in reading them anymore (I just get too much email) so I ended my subscription to it. If people are bugged by the persona they can end their subscriptions to it too.

It comes with the territory since the superheroes are so dominant in the industry. But really, it can get frustrating at times when so many fans consider 'indy' comics to be a farm team for Spiderman.
Possibly my favorite quote I've read on this board

Hell I did'nt see it yet, and despite the overwhelming negativity of this movie (like X3, like SDuperman Returns, and Ghost Rider) I'll still go and see it once my affairs are in order, the guy's just too damn busy at the moment. Although I hope Sam Raimi feels the same way once Warren gets done with his next film project.......
