I say bring back Barry! Bring him back! The DCU needs him!

WHY??? They've done well without him for the last 20 years.

That's a really silly argument. You'd buy a series by Brian K Vaughan cause you've read his previous work and enjoyed it. Something that he has written captured your attention enough to go out and purchase it. So far none of those titles that has been mentioned have interested me at all.

Let me put it to you this way...have you read The Losers by Diggle?? Probably not...and how come?? He's an excellent writer...I expect you to go pick up the first trade.

I'm with you on this one, I like Sean's writing, but outside of Gravity and Inhumans, I cant think of one project he has done at Marvel that really interested me. Sentinal and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, just were/are not up my alley. I think buying for the writer is great, I do it on a lot of books, but it doesnt work on every book.

My guess is we woudnt even be talking about Barry if Bart's book had taken off sales wise, it's been losing readers every month, even AFTER Guggenheim took over.

I think once Wally was gone, the door for Barry was open. We won't have both of them at the same time, and it will shift around. The thing is, with the Flash, this sort of stuff is established. If it's done well, I'm all for it.

The thing that concerns me about it, is that, I think it could hurt Bart as Flash. I'm not a huge Bart fan, I would still prefer Wally, but I cant help, but think that Wally was able to be seen by the readers as Flash, because Barry wasnt around.

Sure. The problem is, no one sees Bart as the Flash now. He didn't earn it and get there like Wally did. It was just forced on him. Going so far as to age him just to jam him into the role.

It just makes me sad how DC ruined a few of their characters during Infinite Crisis. Wally didn't even get a good send-off.

Agreed, but I cant help, but feel that some people were saying the same thing when Wally took over, but DC stuck with Wally, and over time people started to see him as the Flash, and got over it. Of course, Bart could become the next Kyle Raynor.

The Doctor
05-15-2007, 05:26 AM
I still think its Slott and Wieringo.
That would be awesome but that sounds like a team more suited to Friendly.

The fuck? Why do two separate FF: The End projects? And so close to eachother (publication date wise)?
He End books aren't really in continuity so you can do as many as you like. Some might say that Spider-man: Reign was a The End book.

Since me, Jack, and Baird started the derailing;)
Ahem

I think the big difference is that Wally had years of training under Barry. Well...that plus Bart was really a great character and had pretty much just undergone a growth to be Kid Flash. Things moved way too quickly for Bart to thrust him into the Flash role.

That's because DC didnt plan it out well at all. Didio just assumed that because a Crisis was going on, a Flash had to die, rather than thinking "Ok, this is a natural story progression, and a good way for Wally to go out", it was "Ok, Wally needs to go away, make it happen".

This is the second worst thing to come out of this whole storyline. (The worst being what happened to poor little Billy Batson!)

Yeah, Wally had been around for a really long time. He earned it more than Bart. And Barry's sacrifice was huge. It was the brutal "on camera" death, not like the vague disappearence Wally got.

Because it was done for sales, as The Doctor, pointed out, DC was struggling for sales, and Didio saw a fast fix to get them back in competition with Marvel. That's why we are about to have another Crisis in a year, it's an easy way for DC to move copies of their books.

Sales are fine, but some of these are just odd "if it ain't broke don't fix it" decisions. The Flash was fine, Martian Manhunter was fine, Billy Batson was fine, etc...

No reason to be changing all this stuff. Just tell good stories! That's what they were doing with the Flash.

But I think everyone is missing the point. None of the characters that McKeever has written have interested me in the slightest. So how the hell am I supposed to know if he's a good writer or not?? If his Countdown and Teen Titans books are good, then maybe I'll go back and read his other work.

Gravity and Sentinel are all new characters. When you read the story, you'll like them.

I am soooooooo happy he's getting a bigger profile. I don't think I could possibly like this lineup more. Well, if Anarky, Arrowette, or Spoiler was there, maybe. But still.

I wonder, is this the first superhero team(excluding BoP) to have a majority-female cast?

Must disagree again. My friend hates Aquaman, but picked it up because Tad Williams was writing it. Authors can make you like the character. When I didn't like Booster, it was the version of Booster that the author wrote that I didn't like. I think Waid wrote the Booster stuff in 52- I loved that Booster. If my only knowledge of Spiderman was Amazing and Ultimate, I would love the Bendis Spidey and hate Amazing. For me, a writer can make me love or hate a character.

Ok, you got me there! However, I would be willing to bet that if someone like Bendis, Gaiman (although Eternals sucked), Brubaker, Miller wrote Aquaman a lot of people would give it a try. Maybe since McKeever doesn't have that stature yet, you are right.

I would have to hear what those writer's you listed above planned for Aquaman. If they had, what sounded like an interesting take, I would be all over it, but if they said "We are just going to tell the same old, same old, traditional Aquaman stories", I would probably not buy it.

Well, your right, the X-Books do mostly sell due to their hardcore fan base. That said, if they got a super star writer like Grant Morrison or Geoff Johns to take over Aquaman, with a well-known artist like Rags Morales, Ed Benes, or Mike McKone, I could see it being a top 30 book, especially if DC heavily marketed it.

So just get a great writer on the lower selling books, have them pen a dozen issues or so...and then people should stick with the books when the writer leaves??

A dozen of so? X has had the luxury of years of good stuff.

You all seem very excited about McKeever. How would you describe his writing and what makes his writing so strong? The new team seems very exciting, but why should Mckeever draw me in.

McKeever's style reminds me a lot of Bendis on Ultimate Spider-man.

That should say it all.

Ray G.
05-15-2007, 12:33 PM
Possibly...but not interested in the character. I don't even know who the heck it is or even what company published this.

It's an original character. This is his first appearance. If I had to compare it to something, it reminds me a lot of a young Superman-like character. He's a young guy, fresh from the sticks, moving to a new city and trying to begin his fledgling career as a hero. Marvel continuity only plays into it extremely loosely.

Vonn Hennigar

Plus Gravity is now the official Protector Of The Universe replacing the sadly deceased Wendell Vaughn Quasar.

So it looks like he's a character who's going to have some staying power over the long haul.

Dude, fuck Aquaman. I actually do like the character of Anarky.

 on.

I really think there's a ton of potential there. I'm not sure if McKeever is the right fit to write him. He needs a certain edge....

This is why I like you. You're a fellow fan of misunderstood characters. You're a big Spoiler fan too, right? Did you ever read my idea earlier in the thread how to bring her back? As a Warder?

Since someone's bound to say it, I want to be the first:

OMG! McKeever's totally New Avengers-ing the Teen Titans!

Actually, that's a pretty good comparison. A blend of the a-listers who move books(Supergirl, Robin) and the cool b-list characters who need the exposure(Blue Beetle, Miss Martian). Me like. :D

Ray G.
05-15-2007, 12:39 PM
And I say that's BS. If he decided to write Aquaman, I'd say more than half the people here who are singing him praises wouldn't pick up the title...because they don't like Aquaman.

I thought Captain America was the most boring character imaginable. I picked up one issue on Ed Brubaker's name alone, and became completely and utterly hooked. There are very few bad characters.

Ray G.
05-15-2007, 12:41 PM
Wow. Tad Williams has been the worst thing that's ever happened to Aquaman. He and Bruce Jones are 2 writers that will have a very hard time ever getting me to pick up one of their books.

Yeah, Tad Williams is quickly becoming the new Chuck Austen, right down to the sloppily disregarding what came before, and the trying to make a big splash with over-the-top twists right out of the gate.

The funny thing is, I really liked his Ibis one-shot.

I do not agree.

Superman can play the everyman too, they just rarely show it. John Byrne's Man of Steel and Loeb's For All Seasons really show why Gravity reminds me of a young Superman. It's that guy from the small town moving up to the superhero big leagues vibe. I really wish we could see more Superman stories from that time in his life.

DC has almost lost me this year. I collected all 52 of 52.(SHITTY ENDING!) BoP  Gail Simone and can't want for her to fix Wonder Woman. I got the typical Batman titles. (Detectives seems to be the strongest title out the bunch). Outsiders have got me interested in Nightwing. Nightwing has gotten me interested in dropping DC as a whole. What have they done to him????? Green Arrow is great. I  Supergirl because she isn't that sicking sweet original. Teen Titan is just flat out awesome...sometimes...Green Lateran junkie. I buy the book even if it sucked which it doesn't right at the moment. JLA and JSA are doing fine. I am still waiting for JLI reunion. Checkmate doesn't grab me. I got issue 52? of Countdown and wondering if it worth sticking around for another 51 issues. Trails of Shazam! is on the cutting block this week. It just isn't what I expected out of the series.

This is the second worst thing to come out of this whole storyline. (The worst being what happened to poor little Billy Batson!)

Agreed, what happened with wally was pretty bad, but Billy, that was just completely fucking horrible.

The Flash is a bit fucked, Trials of Shazam is completely fucked up and is ruining characters, in my opinion. Hopefully we get one good Marvel out of countdown.

You all seem very excited about McKeever. How would you describe his writing and what makes his writing so strong? The new team seems very exciting, but why should Mckeever draw me in.

I like McKeever, because I think he writes some really good, complex characters. Really 3 dimensional, and even his heroes are fuck up sometimes. His action scenes are decent, nothing spectacular but he doesn't fuck it up at all. Yeah, mostly the characters.

I feel the same way. I think for fans of Mary Marvel, it's going to be like a roller coaster. They'll be some good things you'll cheer about, a lot of things people will get super pissed about...but in the end she'll pull through and people will be satisfied with her story.

And I'm only basing this on what I went through with Booster Gold in 52.

You don't count. You buy everything.

And the point is...and I'll keep saying this although you (not just you Ray) just don't get the point...you read something by Brubaker previously. You enjoyed his writing. You had to get hooked on something he wrote first...and it was most likely a character that you were enjoying before he came on board.

I get what you're saying, but I don't totally agree. A lot of the stuff I first read I picked up not because of a character, but because of word of mouth. I got into BKV because a fried lent me Y, and Bendis when I was loaned Powers. With both of those books there was no pre-established characters to get drawn into. Brubaker I did get into becuase of the characters he was working on. And I'm sure in certain cases press coverage. I think there's a lot of different ways to first get interested in a writer, and I think them working on a character is minor.

So I just read the newsarama interview about Countdown to Adventure (very lame name by the way).

Anyone (other than Ray) going to be picking this up? I can't decide. I loved the space heroes in 52, but I also like the fact that they're home now. Seems like Buddy should stay with the family for awhile. Same with Adam.

I agree, like I said I was hoping for a Buddy/Adam stuck in space book, but without Kory, and them stuck in Space. Family is a big motivator for both of those characters, and if they are out in space, it should be for finding and saving their families. Like Adam Strange trying to find them during Planet Heist.

There's a website that catalogues all the ages of the Titans with proof and evidence. Based on the timeframe, Kid Devil can be conclusively proven to be 17. Ravager is 16, Robin is 17, Wonder Girl is either 16 or 17, depending on whether you believe Peter David or Phil Jiminez.
