Yeah? No, I'm into it big time. My mom is a teacher, she started reading them around book 3 to see what all the kids were talking about, and recommended it to me. I love them.
Good man.
I have never read any of the Harry Potter books...and I'm starting to feel like I'm missing out. How many books are out there...counting the new one? Also, would you recommend buying the set of them or just one at a time? (I'm assuming there's some a nice set of HP books put together out there.)

Yeah, I'm constantly on the verge of dropping Catwoman, and yet I never do. I'm quickly losing patience with it, though. I think I might be done after the AA tie-ins. But then, it might be cancelled very soon anyway, with the sales.
I'm enjoying AA, in a trainwrecky way. It's just so utterly out there.
I'm with you on Catwoman. I've been buying out of habit, but I'll definitely drop it with the AA tie-ins, and no way I'm starting again after that.

I had to reread 6, there were so many points I forgot about completely.
I realllly hope that the ending is a happy one, I don't mind some sadness, and I expect horrible deaths, but I want at least it to end on a positive note.

I gave up on Catwoman after Brubaker left. I tried a couple Pfeifer issues, but wasnt impressed at all. To me, Brubaker nailed the character so well, I dont think any other writer will ever come close.

I'm amazed that so many people are still buying All-Star Batman, I mean never mind the quality, that's subjective, but after the obvious laziness of the creators towards getting the book out, I would think more fans would be like me and just not give a damn anymore.
Morrison's Batman is growing on me though, I must admit. Outside of the horrible, horrible, horrible prose issue, his run has been pretty good.

Jeph Loeb
Loeb's Catwoman in Hush was far too generic for my tastes. I thought the Tim Sale mini was the worst project those two have done together, but I stand by what I said, no writer will nail the character like Brubaker. Unless DC put's someone like Andreyko on, I cant see one current DC writer nailing the character like he did. Pfeifer damn sure isnt cutting it....

I'll never stop buying All-Star Batman and Robin. Everytime a new issue comes out it's like a suprise party for me. I love flipping through my pull stack and being surpised a new issue is out. I'm used to long waits because I'm a Planetary fan and Ultimates fan. Late books happen and I've stopped caring. The big two aren't gonna change their policy on late books anytime soon so why bang my head against the wall.
Oh yeah Frank Miller gave me a new term to rip on people "Sperm Bank."

Ah, well yeah, Loeb and Sale nailed the character there. I still think Brubaker takes the cake though. That Wildcat/Catwoman team up issue by Brubaker and Stewart is the best Wildcat story ever. I say that as a Geoff Johns fan, but man did I love that issue.
Aside from Andreyko, Darwyn Cooke would write an awesome Catwoman as well. Selina's Big Score was very good, though Cooke would have to draw it, not David Lopez or Paul Gulacy.

I dont mind short delays, like a couple weeks or a month, but when it starts getting to be a year, I just stop caring. For me comics are a medium that rely on that "hook" at the end of the issue that makes you want to buy the next issue, next month. All-Star Batman, Ultimates and Planetary, well two of those three may be good books, but when I cannot remember what happened in the last issue because it came out 6 months ago, I just cant muster up the interest.

My opinion on All-Star Batman is it's a parody on Miller's part, or he got a BAD batch of weed :)
I'm not all that offended by it though, if only because nothing that happens in it "matters" to the characters in the DCU. If this run was happening in Batman, I would be bitching about it every day---in between work and porn of course.

I tend to buy the single, monthly issues still. I dont know, it's just what I am used to. I like trades, but I would be lying if I said I own a ton of them, most of the trades I have read have been OGN's or from the library, otherwise I tend not to buy them. After I grab my week's haul I usually dont feel like spending another $20 :)

I personally don't mind late books when it's a stand-alone property. Then it comes out as fast as they can put it out. But when it's an existing property that's known for being relatively regular, like Runaways, or something that effects the whole line, like Civil War, it really irritates me.

I understand what you mean. I actually only trade wait on one on-going and that's Invincible. Otherwise if I have a few extra bucks laying around I travel to Half Price Bookstore and see if there's any cheap trades worthing buying.

I'm always amazed that Marvel and DC cannot get the major events out correctly. Seriously, dont they know it's gonna sell? Wait until you have got the issues in and then ship it, it's not rocket science. Civil War's delays sucked because they pushed the whole line into a mess, but Infinite Crisis and it's rush job's, fill-in artwork, and late re-writes wasnt any better.

Green Lantern for the main story, Green Lantern Corps for the secondary story of how it affects the Corps, and Tales of the Sinestro Corps One-shots if you like the villains. But you won't have to buy more than 3-4 comics a month max to follow the entire event, which is pretty decent.

Actually, I think he mentioned the major reason for the WildCATS delays is Grant Morrison. Morrison apparently has had trouble getting WildCATS and The Authority scripts in due to a heavy Hollywood script workload right now. Lee also said he was burnt out and needed to take time off, thusly they had a year long delay on All-Star Batman. I feel burnt out at times to, but I dont get to just leave my job and go on a vacation when the work piles up.

All-Flash # 1 - Uh when did Wally West become the sickest Mofo on the planet? His punishment of Inertia would have Frank fucking Castle going "Whoa", Totally wrong. Agree completely about the horribleness of Daniel Acuna's art. 2 pages only but damn are they bad. Proportions all out of whack, bad costume design and of course the glossiness.
Justice League Of America # 11 - I like Red Arrow & Gene Ha is talented. That's all i got :?
Countdown # 41 - Once again, i can't remember a damn thing about the book 5 minutes after finishing it. Aside from the insufferable Legion plotline,Jason Todd's inexplicable character assassination and of course the horrible waste of space that is Jimmy Olsen the books not terrible or anything just completely and utterly disposable. Which come to think of it is the worst thing a comic can be really.
Still have a few more books to read. Reviews coming eventually.

Any of you guys watch "Man Vs Wild"? It's the ex-British special forces guy, they drop him off in the middle of nowhere, and he has to find his way back. The one I saw the other day, they drop him off in the amazon. He ends up making a bow and hunting piranah. Dude was a total real life Green Arrow. It was awesome.

The first six or so issues were brilliant. Too bad the last four didn't live up to the promise, and then it was replaced with this abombination. :nonono2:
I thought All Flash was really good. It's good to have the real Flash back...hopefully now the stage can be set for Bart's return. The last 2 pages were a muddled mess by Acuna. Enough to make me worry that DC is taking the wrong approach with having him doing the art on the series. Hopefully this was just an experiment for Acuna.
In other news...can the DC Nation page actually be used for something more interesting??? It's such a bore. Pimp your books or something here...don't just ramble with such crappy crap crap crap!

I'm really loving Legacy. Hell...I'm a sucker for the whole Star Wars line. But I think Ostrander gets the SW universe the best. I'm a little weary of them already exposing who Krayt is so early on in the series. He's been the baddie behind the scenes but hasn't really gotten involved in the fights like I hoped he would. My initial guess was that he is Cade's father...but something in this past issue just made me think it couldn't possibly be him.
I'd like if he was someone outside of the Skywalker line but as was spoiled to me recently in one of the latest Star Wars novels...could it possibly be...

I believe that I read somewhere that Ostrander said it wouldn't be anyone related to Skywalker or Solo. I, too, don't think it will be his dad- that would really be too STar Wars cliche. I don't mind finding out so early who Krayt is because it could add an emotional dynamic to the story- depending who he is. Plus, whatThe new Legacy novels are also on point. I can't wait to see where Jacen turning is going to go. a kick ass ending with Mara in the last book. Can't wait for the next installment.

And I wasn't aware that Ostrander was staying away from Krayt being someone from the Skywalker or Solo line. I like that...but does this mean Krayt could be someone else we're familiar with?? Too much death for my tastes. The books were very good(5 aside, although even that had its high points), but it just became too unrelentingly grim. A fascinating universe, but I never loved it quite as much as some.
Besides, some douchebag already partially spoiled me on Livejournal last week, so I figured I might as well just read up on it and find out who bites it.
And seriously? You hate Avengers that much? I agree it doesn't belong in the top ten, but come on, this is the Bendis Board. At least cast your vote and show the rest of these guys how it's done.

I would agree with USM being there due to some board bias, but NA is rock solid.

I don't think it deserves to be in the top ten comics right now, no.
USM is far superior in terms of emotional context, characterization, and depth. NA has some cool twisty plotting and introduced a very interesting dynamic recently, but more than a few of the arcs have been poorly paced. Until the big reveal, this recent ninja-centric arc was pretty much intolerable for me.
You use the words "rock solid", and I'd agree. It's very solid, but not fantastic, and I think there's more than ten books out there that are fantastic.

No, not at all. It's a damn fine book. But picking that over DMZ, YTLM, Fables, etc? Lets face it, most of the "best" aren't in the Marvel or DCU. Think about how Bendis himself would react if he saw his Avengers work of all things up for an Eisner. I honestly wouldn't feel comfortable participating just because there's so much out there that I've yet to get around to.

I agree for the most part, although I do take other things into consideration. For instance, USM might be my favorite book in terms of the characters and the dialogue, but the sheer artistry that goes into the world that Fables deals with pushes it to #1 for me.

I totally agree. The experimental direction of both NA and MA has taken away from story. The plotting has been slow and jumpy. The last issue was very average- mostly chatter of "you're a skrull, maybe I am, can't trust anyone; blah, blah." We only get these once per month- let's get moving. USM is far superior to both. Lots happens while maintaining depth and feeling.

Finally got around to JSA #7. Great issue- glad to see it back on track after that unnecessary detour that was the Lightning Saga. I think, when Johns is on his game, there aren't any better in the superhero genre. His dialogue and exposition flow seamlessly. Johns is definitely "on" in this book. Citizen Steel is a good addition to the team- I like his vulnerability; should make for some heartfelt moments. My only question is: wouldn't he be a better, more effecient hero if he weren't wearing the suit. It allows him to move about in everyday life, but limits his abilities. Hmmm... maybe it will be a factor at some point.

Actually I'm glad they did scrap it. Gravity would have been the 3rd person to use the 'Captain Marvel' title. I don't like it being shifted around so much.
When Monica Rambeau became the 2nd Captain Marvel, I said; "Okay, let her keep it." Then Genis-Vell took it, "Okay, let him keep it". Then they just arbitrarily killed Genis off, then I heard the rumor about Gravity being the new Captain Marvel. No, no. That's enough.
I'd rather they'd just resurrect Mar-Vell (which they ended up doing) than to keep changing it when the character doesn't catch on with readers.

I would agree with your choice of Bru on a book like Cap, but, while I like Uncanny, I wouldn't say he is anywhere near Johns on JSA, Flash, or Green Lantern.
I don't count DD so much, because he writes it much like a detective, noir type story. Love it, but not traditional Superhero stuff.

I ended up going on Friday night. (Sadly I had nothing better to do) It's fun being around fans. It's a kind of unique experience, really cool to see that many kids waiting up for a book. Good chance that's never going to happen again. Went at 11, signed in, got my bracelet (Pink!), went home, slept for a couple of hours, went back a little after one, and just got on the end of the line.
The deluxe edition is nice, sturdy slipcase and a bunch of art.
I'm somewhere in the 500 area. I wanted to pace myself, as I find the idea of not having anymore Harry Potter books really depressing.

I wouldn't say Marvel has good luck, per se. Looking back, they have Heinberg, who did a great series that he then abandoned, they have Lindeloff, who abandoned a mini mid-way, Hudlin is pretty much an embarassment, and I'm not sure anyone else has made much of an impact. Guggenheim does good, solid work for both companies. Not sure if JMS counts, because he didn't start at Marvel. It seems to me like recruiting from hollywood generally doesn't go too well. Now, on the other hand, when someone comes from Hollywood naturally with a pitch, like Grevioux, it seems to generally work out pretty well.

The thing that that column doesn't get about Countdown is that it isn't an "event" per se. It doesn't have the big stuff every week that typifies an event, it doesn't have the a-list writers and especially art that typifies an event. It's just another comic that leads UP to an event. Expecting it to sell WWH or IC numbers is kind of naive.

Hey, any of you remember the Archie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic that spun out of the old cartoon? Yeah? Well, I do, dammit. From what I can recall, it never wrapped up the final storyline. Poor thing was canned before it could be finished.
Now I’ve heard that the aforementioned arc has been greenlit to be finished up for Mirage’s 25th Anniversary. Not only will the unfinished stories be published, but the previously released parts will be re-issued, too. Or so I hear.

I agree it shouldnt be expected sell IC or Civil War numbers, but I think it should be selling better than it is. The book is supposed to be leading up to another Crisis and is said to be the "spine" of the DCU. It's supposed to be the book that all kinds of important stuff will happen in that will have an effect on all the DCU books. Essentially, it was promoted as being the most important book in the entire DC line. The fact that it isnt selling better has got to be disapointing to DC.

I still think that coming so close on the heals of 52 has hurt it. I think people really are getting burned out by weeklys. In addition, after it started, we learned that a lot of the story would be told in monthly minis. If someone wants to get the whole story they will have to read about 10 books per month in additon to the ongoings. I think its numbers should stay pretty level from now on. You're on board, or not.

I may have to start reading them again. I was thinking of starting on the Harry Potter books though first.
And I wasn't aware that Ostrander was staying away from Krayt being someone from the Skywalker or Solo line. I like that...but does this mean Krayt could be someone else we're familiar with?? If so, I would think it could be a descendant of Quinlan Vos. I hope not though...I thought that he had a perfect ending in the Republic series. BTW...has anyone used Vos or his son in any of the SW novels?

Heinberg: He didn't abandon it he did what Whedon did with Astonishing. YA came out bi monthly more often than not. Compare that to his work at DC which in turn is holding up his return to Marvel.
Hudlin-I hear he's gotten better. I didn't mind his Wild Blue Yonder MK Spidey arc.

Heinberg was a definite success, but I don't think he'll be doing any more major work at either company.
Hudlin's stuff still felt extremely corny to me, personally (I dropped around issue 20)
I wouldn't include JMS, since he was already making a name for himself with Rising Stars and the like.

Teen Titans is a rip-off the X-Men.
Hell they did it twice! In the 60's and then again in 1980.
Testify!

The point isn't that he managed to get the original series out on time, it's that the property itself was then left to languish for over a year before he finally got around to telling them that he wouldn't actually be able to continue it.
But yeah, YA was on a better schedule than most of his work.

Um...no.
Teen Titans and X-men have virtually nothing in common. I really can't think of anything off the top of my head besides the age of the protagonists at the beginning.

Yes, that was a clusterfuck and i'm puzzled why Heinberg stringed them along so long.
If he wanted to co-write with Jeph Loeb then fine, do it (Which they probably will) but why wait over a year?
Well cause he wanted to do it solo obviously but is only now realizing he can't.
That kind of unprofessionalism is what taints these Hollywood guys.

They're a team of teenagers. Sure the X-Men have the whole prejudice angle and the Titans have the Legacy angle but the basics are in place.
As for the 1980's ... Come On!!!
The X-Men were dead in the water until the famous 1975 revival, Marv Wolfman and George Perez wanted to do the same thing with the Titans when they went to DC.

The teen angle was barely the focus of X-men. The originals aged pretty quickly, and while there was more personal drama than in most titles, it really wasn't a "teen book". In fact, the feels of the book are pretty different. X-men being a school atmosphere, which was pretty unique for its time, while Titans was more of a teen clubhouse atmosphere.
Yeah, that was a brilliant idea in the 80's. "Hey, they made their flagship book good! Let's make ours good too!"

And during that period both titles lit up the charts.
I don't care if one did follow the other, there's some fantastic stories in both.

From a 2005 interview:
Teen Titans Companion: How much of an uphill battle was it at first to bring the Titans back?
Len Wein: It was very weird...I said, "We want to bring back the Teen Titans," and [Jeanette Kahn] gave [myself and Marv Wolfman] the 'Springtime for Hitler' look...
...and...
TTC: It wasn't long after the New Teen Titans was launched that people started to compare it to the X-Men. You're in a unique position to address those comparisons: in your opinion, how valid were they?
LW: They were very valid. Both of them were the best-selling books that the companies were doing. That's the only comparison! [laughs]
TTC: So there was no intention whatsoever to try and imitate the success of the X-Men?
LW: No.

That's what I'm trying to tell these guys! Making your title good is not ripping off the other company's good titles.
It's almost as funny as when that guy flew into a rage about DC putting out annuals last year because they were "ripping off Marvel's efforts in putting the prestige back in Annuals"...when DC was the first company to put out Annuals.

Thanks. The only song I really like on the 2006 album is "Stolen" I listen to it at least twice a day. Great to put in if you're feeling a little heartsick.

I never read it, but have very fond memories of it. My friend's dad had a copy of it, but would never let us read it. We would just sit there staring at it up on it's shelf. It had a weird mythic quality.

Plus, I haven't read Waiting Place, but most of Sean's best work(Inhumans, Gravity, SM:heart:MJ) has been superhero related, and managed to use that genre to focus on the characters. I have no doubt TT will follow suit.

I've never considered it a superhero book. It's a high school romance book, and Spider-Man is just MJ's Brad Pitt. I'm definitely getting Titans, and I'm overjoyed to hear it isn't going to tie into many events.

You are hereby never allowed to use the word "Event" in any of your posts.
Ever.
Again!
Besides what would it tie-into?
Sinestro Corps?
Then again Final Crisis begins in May so that should give Teen Titans what...9 months before that event hits?

Yeah, but I don't think Spider-man 's Mary Jane counts as a super hero book. Spider-man isn't even one of the main characters really.
