So, I keep meaning to get up some reviews for the first four issues of Countdown, but I'm finding it difficult to have much positive things to say. Overall, its just... there. I'm finding it difficult to connect with very much in this story and the jumping around from story to story just isn't working this time out. Some of the tie-ins to ongoings are working and make sense to the overall story (I think) of Countdown, but some seem awfully superfluos. And what the fuck is up with Jimmy? And the stuff with Adam has me annoyed, too. I'm sticking with this for a while, but goddamn I am tempted to drop this.
The art just isn't doing it for me, either. And lordy, I miss J.G. Jones' covers.
I think overall for these first four issues, I'll go with a 5.5/10.

So am i the only person who realizes the Monitors are in fact the staff at DC Comics itself?
Not literally but think about it, arguing about which characters need to live or die (Most of which ARE of the dreaded redundant variety)
There's the Dan Didio Monitor, the Geoff Johns,Mark Waid,Grant Morrison,Paul Levitz,Mike Marts versions as well i'm sure.
Hell it's been the only bright spot of Countdown for me yet imagining who's "Voice" is who's.
So clearly kill-crazy Monitor is Didio.
I assume the sane leader monitor is probably Levitz? If you see a Monitor cackling madly while changing continuity in bizarre ways to amuse himself, we have our Morrison monitor.
This just made Countdown infinitely more enjoyable for me. :)

Countdown is really meh for me as well. i dug 52 for the most part. i havent read this weeks issue yet but so far im not really impressed. seems really disjointed and nothing that exciting.

I don't think I ever saw that episode of BTAS, so I was pleasantly surprised seeing that scene.
Season 3, written by Paul Dini.
As for creative changes on the way, I'd love to see them ditch All-Star Bats, Confidential, and Supes/Bats, and shake up Robin and Nightwing.
Same.
NRAMA: Back to Black Adam - his word was "sorry?" Captain Marvel changed it to that? And he has the wisdom of Solomon? I mean - wasn't that, or wouldn't that have been one of the first words he said or at least a really likely one if say, he visited Isis' grave?
MM: Did you read the end of 52 or World War III? Did you see what Black Adam is capable of? Still think the word “sorry” is even in his vernacular?
NRAMA: In that he’s sorry Isis and Osiris are dead because he went the wrong way, probably…
MM: Well - but Black Adam editor Michael Siglain assures me that there are still one or two big pieces to Black Adam’s puzzle to be discovered in his upcoming August mini-series.
So i'm confused. Black Adams new Magic Word really was SORRY?
Seriously? Or am i reading this all wrong?
Because if so that's a new kind of terrible.
I don't know how to feel about this. It's corny, definitely, but it's an interesting Silver Age idea.
I didn't have nearly as much to catch up on as I thought I did:)

Yeah, they're having a hard time jelling it into a solid, stand-alone comic.
My biggest problem is that they're not telling just their own story. They have to work events around the DCU into it as well.

thats a good point. i really think its going to hurt them trying to tie in every single DCU book to it.

So is DC ruining the Amazons for good with their horrific war against the USA?
Basically are these characters "Radioactive" from now on? Can Wonder Woman not be tainted by working with them in the future (Barring some kind of Ares mind-Mojo controlling the Amazons or something)
The sad thing is they could have done it like say Namor attacking the surface world but without it being so damn vicious you can still use Namor in future stories. Can the Amazons be used again. Then again i had the exact same problems with Black Adams child-killing spree as well.
Mary Marvel you dumb whore!!!

Seriously, I'm suprised it hasnt been followed up more on, but I guess I just kinda assumed it was because Batman can overlook it because according to Joe Kelly he has the hot's for Wonder Woman....and created a fail safe to take down the entire JLA. Superman probably over look's it because Superman is supposed to try and see the good in everyone.

There's a big difference between killing one murderous megalomaniacal villain, and killing scores of innocent children.
I'm not sure how Diana is going to reconcile this. Hell, I'm not sure how the Amazons will deal with it once whatever spell they're under is taken off.

Well, they'll abide by the law. A grand jury decided it was justifiable homicide. I think they don't like it, but they accept it.

No clue, I thought it was supposed to be explained in the Annual, but that appear's to be about Ra's Al Ghul....so at this point who knows. I would prefer they never tell it anyway, it's a pretty dumb idea. I don't believe Plastic Man actually appeared in the story until Ethan was gone from the book, and he seemed very much like his standard goofy self when he did.

Seems like it, just one that sells. I really wish people would stop supporting it with their wallets, not taking the chance with (IMO) better books out there. If they insist on superheroes, then read Detective, The Spirit and JSA, damnit;)

There's no way they couldn't have a new major team lined up on JLA by this point.
They've known all along that Brad Meltzer was leaving with issue # 12 and it's by far DC's # 1 book both in sales and well Oompf. It is the fucking JLA after all it should be their number 1 book.
The only question is if Ed Benes sticks around as well. Mark Waid and Greg Rucka are 2 big namers who don't seem to have a lot on thier plate at the moment.
Their down to just Brave And The Bold and Checkmate between em right? The new Crime Bible (Which HAS to be changed to The Question) notwithstanding.

Countdown #46
Green Arrow #75
Green Lantern Corps #13
Hawkgirl #65

And from outside the main DCU....

Hawkgirl is long dropped. I'm just reading it in-store until the cancellation.
Trials of Shazam, while utterly mediocre, has not reached dropping level yet. I find the story moderately engaging, in that I at least want to find out how it ends, and I love the art.

Well, good to see we got a little of our randomness back. Baird would be proud. :)
I'm probably not going to be around much this evening. Sasha called me up to tell me she hurt her ankle this morning running for the bus, so she's going to have to cancel our date for tomorrow. She told me I didn't need to come over, but screw that. Her roommates are already gone for the summer, but she's taking a summer session course, so I'm a little worried about her being there by herself. So, anyway, I'll be leaving at five.
I'm thinking about getting her to sign up for the board one day, but I'm worried my board persona will scare her off. :)

The legends I've heard say that when a girl says one thing, she usually means the opposite. :scared: So when she says she doesn't want me to make a big deal over it and come over, she probably means "get your ass over here now". Plus, she tends to be an overachiever and push herself too hard, so I want to make sure it's not more serious than she's letting on.

Late Review:
One of the better issues I’ve read in awhile. I’m not sure why that is, though, as this is just some standard superhero fare: the young hero, unsure about his powers, goes to find help, misunderstood battle, and then finds some genuine help and understanding from long-standing established hero. But I enjoyed it. However, I am still considering dropping this book again. Its pretty good stuff, but my wallet could be going towards something better. That said, I will be picking up the next issue (which I forget to order from DCBS) solely because it features Eclipso.
The art by Freddy Williams was pretty decent, and actually wasn’t jarring at all coming off of Albuquerque.

Yup. I've been rereading the series, and it was sometimes work to get through 1&2. But I'm on book 5 right now, so I'm happy. I think the books have just been getting better and better. 6 was my favorite, 5 right behind it, and so forth.

Another review:
Well, this is probably the best issue of the Lightning Saga thus far – or at least, the one that I enjoyed the most. However, it’s still not up to the standards of the book pre-LS. Overall, I don’t have too much to say about this issue. Most of the dialogue is well-handled with only a couple of lines that made me groan. The large battle scene is well done and it’s good to see Supes using his head again. I look forward to the next chapter, which is saying a lot since I’ve been dragging my feet a bit on this crossover.
It’s great to see Eaglesham back on the pencils this issue, and I’m sure that went a long way towards my enjoyment. Some great solid stuff from him.
That’s all, folks.

I love how after book 6, Harry has no one who's really watching over him. He's lost his parents, Sirius, and Dumbledore. He's all alone now.
Since teen romance has always been a favorite genre of mine, I really want to know what happens between him and Ginny.

On one hand I want a happy ending for Harry. On the other hand, it feels like this should be the end of his story and can only end with his death.
I would like to see Ron and Hermione end up together and happy, though, in the aftermath of Book 7

I can't wait to read JK Rowling's next project. She's never going to be considered a hack, but she might have just struck gold with Harry Potter and never come anywhere near that level again.
Also, I'm really curious about whether or not they'll continue stories in that "world" It's hard to believe they wouldn't at some point. I'm not sure how I'd feel if they did, but I know I'd be buying no matter what.

I think I don't want any more stories. At least not any sort of continuation.
There's potential with stories set in that world, though. Maybe something to do with a younger Dumbledore, or a history of Hogwarts, or something with completely different with completely new characters, but set in the Potter-world.
Is Rowling planning on writing more books? For some reason, I got the impression that she was done.

Well, she was in pain, cranky, and panicking about whether this was going to screw up her GPA. Her foot was looking pretty swollen too, so I got her to get off her feet and let me take care of her for a few hours. I eventually had to leave to catch the last bus back home(can't spend the night at a girl's dorm, heh), but I made sure she had all the stuff she needed - eats, reading material, an ice pack for her foot, etc. After much begging on my part, she finally agreed to go to the campus health center and get it looked at in the morning if it wasn't feeling any better. So I might be taking her there tomorrow.
I'm pretty sure I scored some major boyfriend points here, but I'm just glad I was able to make her feel a little better and hopefully de-stress. She's a bit scary when she's in panic mode. Plus, I gave her the sampler pack of comics I picked out for her birthday early, in case she gets bored. She seemed to like the look of them. :)

YOu know there's a book out already, right?

You got her comics for her Birthday? You got her something besides comics as well, right? what comics did you get her?
Yeah, I got her this nice statue I saw her admiring a lot at this local new-age store. It's a Unicorn. Girl thing. Expensive too. But she'll love it when I give it to her on her birthday. This was just a little bonus gift. :)
I got her Will Eisner's To the Eye of the Storm, the complete run of Thor: Son of Asgard, the first two digests of SM:heart:MJ, and the first three of Runaways. All picked because of things I know she likes. If these don't get her into comics at least a little, nothing will.
Yeah, I've been thinking that for awhile now.
I figure Harry will have to die in order to stop Voldemort
Oh, you guys are talking about the last book, and not the (fifth?) movie. I see.

As for book seven, and I have nothing to base this on....
Ginny Weasley and Serverus Snape - fucking dead.

Can't go wrong with Eisner, I just finished reading the Contract with God trilogy last night. AMAZING! Also Runaways and SM 's MJ and Runaways are both great, but I personally don't like the digests. I understand thought that they are for people who don't want to shell out for the OHC.

That's what I think. Harry's not dying. I do think he'll probably part ways from Ron and Hermione, likely going off on his own as the lone warrior. A lot of people are predicting Ron dying, but I don't see it.

Back to save this thread from Potter geekery. That, or contribute to it. :)
Harry Potter is too mainstream to really be considered geeky. I have friends who had never picked up a book for entertainment in their life that are addicted to the series.

Far too big a shift in tone from the previous books. It's not just jarring, it's downright shocking. The death seems pointless and offhand, and Dolores Umbridge is purely the most unpleasant villain in the history of fiction. There's a clear line between a villain you love to hate and who makes a good foil for the hero, and a character who just exists to be an unpleasant sadist. Plus, the nearly complete lack of Hagrid hurts.

Not all OHC's are more expensive then the collected singles. Plus you also get the larger page size which it can be considered you are paying a premium for.

Book 5 is when the series got phenomenal for me. And I teared up when Sirius died. I thought they had great build up for it. And it definitely played into the theme of Harry Potter alone, without others watching over him when he faces Voldemort.
I'm probably biased as a singles buyer who would never buy anything twice, though. This was pretty much my only experience buying trades in years, except for the occasional Fables, Y, and Walking Dead.
I wouldn't pay for shit twice either. But some things read better in trades, and sometimes you come late to the party and can't find the singles, the you got to go trade. And if I'm buying things collected, well TPB's are good, but OHC's are Oh so pretty.

Some people on this board just like to look for people to pick fights with. I have no problem putting myself and my interests out there, so it makes it easy. Really, most of my problems come from three areas: my right-wing political opinions, my Supergirl-love, and my unrepentant fanboyishness when it comes to comics and movie adaptations. But in the end, 90% of the fights people pick stem from their own petty little insecurities than anything else.

My dad. Ray was playing wiffle ball outside...his house is located next to ours. My dad came flying out of the house yelling "You no good beatnik! Stay on your own damn side of the fence!!" I'm not too good with this kind of thing. :surrend:
Sorry to hear that, man.
Now aren't you sorry you waited until now to read it?
The story doesn't get any weaker. There were some weak single issues here and there, but in trade form they shouldn't stick out too much. It's overall a great ****1/2 read.
Nah, I like trades better anyway. I decided to take a break when it got to issue #5, that's when Bennet needs a breather:(
And I say you're too easy on you're grading, Ray. Even though these issues were absolutely fantastic, they'd get around an 8.6 from me:p

Or be a man and carry her everywhere. That's what I'd do.
She'd likely beat me upside the head if I tried. Fiercely modern, this girl. ;)

There's a ton of art changes throughout the series, but none of them are really bad. The art always stays extremely solid, even if an issue by Darick Robertson is a bit jarring.
And that's only a .4 difference.

But everyone says these first ones are the best of the series. I'm saying I'd give an 8.6 to these, you say you'd give a 9 for the whole book;)

I'd give the overall 52 story a 8, maybe 8.5, out of 10.

The first ones aren't the best. The whole thing is fantastic.

Agreed. The last act is absolutely phenomenal. I especially like the issues that are devoted solely to the closing act of one storyline near the end: Steel, Ralph, Questoya, Black Adam, Space Heroes, Booster, in that order.

That conjures hilarious images in my head.

Two things of note.
Supergirl will be joining the cast of Smallville next season. Thus moving Smallville up to "watch live" on my schedule for the first time ever.
And this right here? This is what's known as awesome.
