Only 3 or 4 volumes, right? There are so many books I need to get caught up on. Once I finish YTLM I'm diving into Ex Machina so I can read it monthly soon.

3, I believe.

I can't believe they didn't include "The Kiss" by DeMatteis/Romita in the hardcover. Beautiful little story.
That was in the back of the Mysterio arc I'm talking about.

Retro Review Part Deux - Batman #659-662 by John Ostrander & Tom Mandrake

:Poo: What a steaming pile. Blegh i can't even bother wasting time to mock this mess. The horrible Phantom Of The Opera/Hunchback ripoff villain. Johnny Karoake??? Shameful mess of a comic that should have stayed in the editors drawer where it no doubt festered for years.

2/10

Batman # 663-665 by Grant Morrison & John Van Fleet and Andy Kubert.

Well that was uh interesting.

Batman # 663 to it's credit actually does have a good story. Joker gets Harley Quinn to go around and kill his old henchman from the loser clown gang to those lil midgets from The Killing Joke. He then attempts to escape from Arkham with Harley's help but he's gone so over the deep end he trys to kill Harley too enter Batman! to stop him and kick his ass.

Pretty good story too bad it's depicted in such a terrible way. Horrible prose that goes on and on and on and oh fuck punch me in the balls to distract me from this pain, all topped off by "Artwork" that looks like something a 12 year old cooked up with some pirated computer imaging software from Belarus.

Doesn't help that the Joker's bold new look is already forgotten about a whopping 2 months later and were back to Krusty The Clown Joker again.

Ah well.

3/10. Take the basic plot and write a you know COMIC BOOK and you've got a pretty kick-ass 2 or even 3 parter.

As for the next 2 parts #664-665 more of the same fluffy stuff from Morrison and Kubert. Bruce's "relationship" with this super-model whore is laughably forced and this whole 3 Demons haunting Bruce plot doesn't interest me in the slightest. Still Andy Kubert does another bang-up job but the scenes with Batman being helped by the whores of Gotham are so similar to Sin City i think someone needs to give Frankie Miller another royalty cheque. I half expected to see Dwight and Gail hanging out in the background in a few scenes.

All will be forgiven if this leads to Ra's Al Ghuls resurrection already though. Come on just get it over with and stop boring me with Talia Al Tits and her lil shitty brat. I want to see Ra's rise from a Lazarus Pit and impale these 2 weaklings as soon as possible.

6/10 for 664-665.

I will suprise you then with a positive review, and I didn't particularly like last weeks. This week was solid- escpecially the rogues, great double crosses. Mary Marvel was cool but what was with Black Adam? I'm sure it will be answered next time. This issues really moved forward! And, I liked the history of the multiverse told in context of a story- an improvement over 52 in that regard.

DC Universe Reviews:

I think moving to DC may have been the best thing ever to happen to Tony Bedard, because surprisingly, his first issue of Countdown is by far the best of the run so far, as all our main stories get moving in a big way. We open with a surreal headscratcher of a scene picking up from last issue as Jimmy Olsen comes under attack by Killer Croc. Killer Croc tries to tear Jimmy's head off....and instead succeeds at turning Jimmy into living taffy. Has Jimmy been slipping Gingold? Is this the return of Elastic Lad? Jimmy's just as confused as we are. We then move on to the Monitors, as the 52(one for each universe) judge the rogue monitor who killed Joker's Daughter. He insists that a proactive approach of hunting is the only way to eliminate the temporal anomalies, and pinpoints Jason Todd, Donna Troy, and Kyle Rayner as his first three targets. A useless segment between Red Arrow and Karate Kid follows. Things pick up from there, though, as Trickster, Piper, and Mirror Master brainwash, rob, and apparently kill a crooked old businessman. The high stakes game of brinksmanship between Piper and Trickster is a ton of fun to watch, and it's great to see these two straddle the line between good and evil. The best and most talked-about segment of the issue, no doubt, will come at the end, however. Mary Marvel, powerless, is chased by muggers and takes refuge in what I assume is an abandoned mosque. The place is filled with corpses, which are soon joined by her attackers. The place is guarded by a vicious sentry - who turns out to be a still powerless but no less enraged Black Adam. And so Mary's quest to regain her powers may have found an unlikely ally. Now, the start of History of the Multiverse is death warmed over, so I had to deduct a point. But a kick-ass issue all around.

This is by far the best issue of Picoult's run on the title, but I have to ask, what the fuck is DC thinking? This isn't a tie-in with Amazons Attack, this is a hard crossover! The action picks up from AA #1, continues with major developments, and will pick up again in AA #2! There was really no warning of this, and a lot of people are going to be angry, I believe. I wonder if the TT, Supergirl, and Catwoman tie-ins will work like this too. Anyway, the bulk of this issue is a rather tense three-way confrontation between Diana, Hippolyta, and Circe. The identity of the evil Sarge Steel impostor is revealed(It's Everyman, natch), and the good Sarge Steel impostor, Nemesis, takes his place to search for the real Sarge Steel. Head hurts. There are some interesting scenes in the main confrontation, though, as it seems to confirm that Circe is not controlling Hippolyta. Indeed, when Circe's plan to destroy Themysrica as a result of this war, Hippolyta runs her through, killing her! This seems to set up Hippolyta as the undisputed villain of this piece, and I don't know how I feel about that. Next issue of AA should determine that a lot more, but I can't imagine a lot of people are going to be pleased with this. That being said, this is only the conclusion of a fill-in run on the book, so we'll see how it plays in the main event.

I was worried after last issue's fill-in that this fantastic run wouldn't get a satisfactory conclusion. Well, I was wrong, as Mark Waid and Barry Kitson return to bring to a perfect conclusion the Legion's epic war with the dominators. After last issue's victory, the endgame of Cosmic Boy and Brainiac 5 is revealed - a massive bomb set to blow up the core of the Dominator's homeworld. There's much dissent among the team as to whether they can go this far, but the bomb IS going to go off. Brainiac made sure of that. And someone will have to fly it into the core - and they won't be coming back. Mon-El is chosen, as he's already likely dying from lead poisoning. His farewell to the team is a perfect scene that shows exactly why this book is so great. But what's even better is the twist that follows - it wasn't a bomb. The device was actually a phantom zone projector that beamed Mon-El and the entire planet out of our reality, safely contained. The run ends with a Legion election for leader(already revealed in the solicits to be Shadow Lass, thus notching another point for political correctness) and a mysterious future for Cosmic Boy. The future of the Legion is up in the air, but nothing can take away from what's clearly been one of the best runs.

Easily the weakest issue of the entire run. I love Beechen's take on Tim Drake, but he just created a loser of a storyline here, and no amount of good dialogue can save this mess about evil corporations, masked mercenaries, and decomposing heroic gang members in love. The good art and the decent anecdote of the history of the Lords of the Avenues don't do much to save this issue, although they do make it a bit more tolerable. Way too much of this issue is devoted to Robin fighting useless mercenaries alongside a pair of dying mutated gang members, and that's just not a good comic. There's an amusing scene involving Killa Nilla and his charge, but the comic doesn't really pick up until Tim confronts the evil head of Strader Corp. The boss is about to get away with his scheme - until a bullet ends him for good, courtesy of Cassandra Cain. Based on her "You're welcome, Tim", I'm guessing she's in post-Titans East semi-heroic mode. The last few scenes with Tim and Alfred are pretty good, but overall, this is just way too thin a plot and way too gory and ugly to make for a very good Robin comic. Next issue's stand-alone "Father's Day" tale promises to be better.

Ah, Gail. Only Gail could pack this much hilarity and quirkiness into what amounts to a pretty straight hero vs. villain team fight issue. The plot here is deceptively simple - Birds of Prey and Secret Six throw the fuck down while Ice's life hangs in the balance. But it's what happens in between that makes this issue so brilliant. There are just so many great scenes here, from Catman and Huntress' playful banter, to the standoff between Spy Smasher and Deadshot, to the perpetually bizarre Ragdoll, and of course, Misfit. God, I love Misfit. She sort of reminds me of Squirrel Girl in some way, and watching her and Harley throw down is a thing of beauty. Misfit coming out of nowhere and screaming "Dark Vengeance!" and kicking Harley in the face is a thing of beauty. Creote's...method for waking up Ice is also pretty funny, and we're left with one hell of a cliffhanger as she wakes up, seriously pissed off and more powerful than she's ever been. Ice is back. Let's hope it's the Ice we knew. All I know is, Gail's unique vibe on this title will sorely be missed. And please, Sean, keep Misfit around!

One of the weakest issues so far, in my opinion. After the brilliant stand-alone Nightmaster issue, this one sort of veers away from what makes the series so great. That's not to say it's a bad book by any means. It's very solid and packed with a bunch of promising new story threads that will likely pay off spectacularly. However, I don't feel that Scott Hampton's art really fits the title at all, and there isn't nearly enough of the quirky humor that sets this title apart. This is much more of a suspenseful issue. In fact, Shadowpact barely appears at all. The villains take center stage here as we get ready for a big move against the forces of Shadowpact. The brutal Kid Karnevil proves himself to be a force to be reckoned with in the shocking opening segment. The mysterious Doctor Gotham sacrfices his minion Stegra in a chilling manner to attain power. And the heroic Zauriel is given a new mission by his divine overlords: He must slay an unholy demon on Earth - Blue Devil. A lot of good stuff is set up here, and I can't wait to see where it goes next, but it really didn't feel that much like Shadowpact. It needed more Ragman, Lady Fell, and of course, Detective Chimp.

Part two of three of this absolutely dreadful storyline, and I read this and will read part three in store. There's no need to waste my money on what essentially amounts to Pat Lee indulging his giant robot battle fetish with Superman and Batman briefly fighting some wierd sand Brainiac. There's a badly done plot about the Metal Men as security guards at Waynetower too. I wasn't aware that the Metal Men were the mutantkind of the DCU, with everyone hating and fearing them. How could anyone hate Platinum? She's adorable! The two new Metal Men, Gold and Copper(the cliched "bad girl", in case anyone cared) do nothing for me either. Wait for Rouleau's mini for some real Metal Men fun, and pass on this.

Civil War and Amazing Spider-man picked up directly from each other's cliffhangers.

I've argued this in countless threads before. While most of the tie-ins were somewhat auxilliary, ASM was pretty much essential.

Yeah, you're right about ASM. I can concede that. In my mind, I can't really differentiate what happened in ASM and what happened in CW (on certain plot points, anyway). ASM is one of the few tie-ins that I did read.

Wonder Woman # 9 may be the funniest book i've read in ages.

So Hippolyta declares War on the United States because they were holding Diana but once Diana shows a inch of resistance, they attack her.

Who edits this mess? The Sarge Steel stuff meanwhile has me totally confused. So we've never seen the real Sarge? It's been Everyman the whole time? Or is it Nemesis half the time or what?

I demand my money... aka 16.6 MB of memory back!!!

Countdown meanwhile...Christ on a crutch i just absolutely loathe this book. Sorry, Jimmy Olsen is the least interesting character in comics to me and seeing Silver Age shit like Elastic Jimmy being brought back actually physically pains me. The Rogues scene was good fun though but i'm still unsure of why they're included here at all. This is a perfect sub-plot for a comic like say i don't know...The Flash maybe??? I amuse myself by pretending the Monitors are actually the DC editorial staff arguing ( I mean come on! clearly it's them) and as for the you know what final page reveal. Too early for me, Way too early. Nice art by Carlos Magno though whoever the hell he is.

I liked it this week too. However, I think the return of one character is way too premature. DC missed on making this comeback more epic.

And I really really enjoyed the History of the DCU (or whatever they call it this time). It made sense within the story and was a decent short standalone tale.

Because those tie-ins were written by Brubaker and Bendis. Most tie-ins are written by people I've never even heard off. X-men and YA/Runaways for example. And they both sucked. I think sometimes creators try to make the tie-in mean to much to the overall story, and so it falls on it's ass.

At various points throughout he talks about Wonder Woman, about his run, about the current series and what he thinks is wrong with it, about the character in general. That man really knows his WW. He talks about himself as a writer, and some differences between prose and comics. He talked about Some of his weaknesses as a writer and some things he's learned. For example he said that he has been hesitant in the past to use a lot of splash pages, because he can fit more narrative into eight panes in that page then one, but he realizes that comic are also for people who want to look at pretty pictures, so he has to conciously set aside spavce for a splash when outlining.

I weep at the lack of importance of Brainiac nowadays :nonono2: In my books he's THE Superman villain and seeing him reduced to this book that sells but few seem to read pains me.

But it did give me one good laugh. When Superman mocks Batman for being too neat when he appears to investigate some "Dirt" on a space station.

Uh Superman first it's a space station, dirt would be pretty unusual, second Pat Lee doesn't actually draw dirt instead it's more like Neon green goop that Batmans looking at.

Birds Of Prey #106 $2.99 – I loved the Barda fight. Always liked her. This was great stuff. Just a big huge fight, very fun.

Countdown #49 $2.99 – Feels like things really picked up with this issue. Jimmy going all elastic thrills me in the “Steve likes the goofy silver-age stuff way a lot!”. So far the Rogues (and I love the rogues) storyline has been a little flat for me. Still, very good!

Shadowpact #13 $2.99 –See review thread. Good!

Supergirl And The Legion Of Super Heroes #30 $2.99 – Great swerve there, and it totally fits all the characters involved! I’m going to miss the heck out of this creative team.

Superman Batman #35 $2.99 – Much better than the beginning of this arc, which I wasn’t crazy about. It’s now clear that they do know Doc Magnus, so that bit of dialogue in the last issue was a little odd. Any book with the Metal Men is OK with me. I love them! I also like the idea of Doc and the team setting up in some Waynetech building somewhere. I think that would be a cool setting for them.

Wonder Woman Vol 3 #9 $2.99 – Much, much better. Feels like a superhero book again. I liked the use of Everyman and Nemesis, two guys that disguise themselves. The art is beautiful, and they are asking lots of interesting questions. Amazons Attack is one of the smaller crossovers, but so far, so good.

From the review thread:

Despite the fact that Shadowpact was almost completely absent from this issue, I found myself enjoying it. The art style is a noticeable change from the previous issues, but regardless of that the art was quite good. As for the plot of the issue, its really just all build up for future storylines. I was surprised by Doctor Gotham's actions towards Strega, as it felt like her character was going to be around a bit longer - not that I actually mind what happened to her, though. Also, I'm not sure who was clamoring for the return of Kid Karnevil, but oh well, we have it now. Surely he's just to replace Strega at the side of Doctor Gotham, yes?
The bit at the end with Zauriel was well done. When I heard that Zauriel was going to be popping up in this book my eyes rolled, but his appearance here (and in subsequent issues) has been explained in a very satisfactory way. As always, I look forward to the next issue.

Because those tie-ins were written by Brubaker and Bendis. Most tie-ins are written by people I've never even heard off. X-men and YA/Runaways for example. And they both sucked. I think sometimes creators try to make the tie-in mean to much to the overall story, and so it falls on it's ass.

The worst tie-in was Heroes For Hire. They had a scene where Captain America was "captured" and would so obviously get out before it was over.

I don't recall Questoya being used anywhere in any actual comic book ever.

For good reason, it's a terrible name.

Either way without Vic it already has a big strike against it in my books.

See also Ted Kordless Blue Beetle,Ray Palmerless Atom and Ronnie Raymondless Firestorm.

Eh, DC is big on their legacies.

Matt O'Keefe

Gotham central was also a big cast book for the most part, but a Question title would have a primary character. Why the fuck are they calling it Crime Bible though, that s suck a stupid name. Was an artist announced, or just that Rucka is writing?

I'm not too into the name either.

Have you read the entire series now? I didn't think they had it all traded yet.

Vonn doesn't seem to need to wait for the trade anymore:scared:

It was so sad when Charlie died. That scene made me want to cry. He's easily my favorite character in the history of television. He was half the reason I watched LOST, never have I grown so attached to a character. Him dying was like losing a pet:cry:

Yeah. Poor Vic. There was really no reason for Montoya to become a new Question. She's a perfectly fine character in her own right.

Yup. I think making her a superhero of sorts subtracts from her character. But down-to-earth books just don't sell at DC, unfortunately.

Desmond is awsome. I'm a big fan of Hurley too, but like I told my friend earlier today, I haven't seen anything really emotionally powerful with him yet. Sawyer is great. I really thought that they'd kill him off this episode. Seemed like they set it up perfectly, by finishing his story. I think it would have been good for the show to have killed one of the Big Three. Everything would have felt so much more up in the air. Obviously, from the flashbacks, that's not going to happen now.

His story should be totally different. Was Mary in a coma for World War 3? Even so, I would think she found out that Black Adam destroyed a whole nation of people. There is no redemption for him and there's no way Mary should go looking to reclaim her powers if he's involved. Black Adam's story should be more epic and he needs some redemption before getting his powers back...if at all.

BTW...does anyone else think that he should have been offered membership to Sinestro's army?? He's probably one of the most feared humans... It would have at least been interesting as a temporary means to regain some power...

BUT...

The whole show can change now... For one thing, do we really know if Sawyer is alive? Secondly, the next season could be Jack & company trying to get back on the Island and have flash backs of how they got off it to begin with. There is so much they can do.

Also, I kind of got sick and tired of Charlie in the 2nd season but he really went out on a high note. His character really did a 180 and he probably went from least fan favorite to most favorite this year.

Bat review!

I found myself quite enjoying this issue, despite it having a number of flaws. I think what intrigues me most is the ideas that Morrison is putting forth here, while the execution still leaves something to be desired. I've decided that I am no longer much of a Kubert fan. I used to love his work, but lately its just not doing it for me. I'm not sure why.

But back to the plot: I really like the idea of the black casebook - a file for all of the things Bats has seen that he cannot explain. Its awesome. The idea of the Three Ghosts of Batman sounds a bit silly at first, but I'm starting to dig on it and I like how everything is hearkening back to Morrison's first issue.

And (like Vonn) I will be fucking stoked if this is leading up to the return of Ra's. The idea that the Third Batman will "hand the city of Gotham over to the devil" (or something along those lines) re-inforces my hope that Ra's will return. Meanwhile, Talia is acting like a bit of a fucking idiot in this issue, but thankfully she was only in a couple pages.

Overall, I was pleased with this issue and found myself smiling a number of times while reading.

Thoughts oin this weeks books.

Countdown #49 - :nonono2:
What the fuck is goig on. I'm almost certainly dropping this book. I'm not willing to pay $12 bucks a month for something that so far has been mediocre at best. THis issue just continued that trend.

Shadowpact #13 - :nonono2:
A shitty issue of a great series. Serioulsly, Zauriel? Horrible character that should never have been created let alone used. Willingham was off his game with this issue and the fact that the book doesn't have a regular artist doesn't help. Some of the artists have been great, this one, not so much. Not that there wasn't some skill in the art, it just did not fit the book at all.

Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes #30 - :thumb:
Damn fucking straight. Only good DC book this week. Great finish the the current arc. This Legion run is seriously awesome, I'm looking forward to what's comiong next, with some trepidation though with Waid no longer being involved.

Bonus Review, Gotham Central Vol. 1: In the line of duty. - :thumb:
Picked this up today, and it's been a while since I read it, just got to say, Fantastic. I love the take of everyday cops living in the fucked up DCU and how they deal with that. Powers does something similar, but as great as Powers is, it's city doesn't have the hstory of Gotham. You understand immediately why these cops are a bit resentfull of batman, great book, I'll probably end up picking the rest of the trades up sometime.

Sweet Picture.

And you know, I was thinking about this...Didio is completely wrong. She was a Robin for a short period of time but she was a hero for longer. Bruce is not supposed to be a cold hearted vigilante anymore after Infinite Crisis...it would seem even more appropriate to have her costume in the Batcave...for Robin's sake at least. Unless she's really not dead and Bruce has her recovering somewhere... Was her death one of those that can not be reversed?

It's entirely possible that she could still be alive.

She was shot and suffered serious internal injuries. She died in a hospital bed with only Batman by her side, as her monitors flatlined.

I like Didio as the voice of DC during these conventions...but I don't think he should really be that involved in the storytelling. If you're going to make the edict that Batman is warm and fuzzy and trusting post IC...see it through. Don't have little conditions like he only cares if you're officially part of the Bat Family.

So Ray...between us...she's actually in a coma due to the severe wounds she endured. Bruce is paying her medical care and is keeping it a secret because of her history and her father's. He's not telling Robin because he doesn't want to get his hope up...and she's not represented in the trophy room because she's not dead.

I'll rerail this thread if I want. I don't bitch about it when you derail it. Some people do, but not me.

Well...as long as it's amusing!! I think he and Jack went back and forth a few times with just smileys!! :-x

Right, we have to remember. What's that saying about people who forgot the past are doomed to repeat it.

I like Didio as the voice of DC during these conventions...but I don't think he should really be that involved in the storytelling. If you're going to make the edict that Batman is warm and fuzzy and trusting post IC...see it through. Don't have little conditions like he only cares if you're officially part of the Bat Family.

She was under orders from Batman/Bruce to fake the death... I'm not really sure how this was played out. Maybe Leslie is faking her death to keep Bruce away from training another crime fighter...

Yeah, that's my pet theory. A recovering Steph is with Leslie in Africa, helping at the clinic. Leslie took the fall for Steph's "death" to throw Bruce off the trail.

Still doesn't explain Bruce being a dick, though.

maybe dc blackmailed dini into writing dc by threatening to ruin all the characters he helped make cool

"well mr dini, Roland Dogget is next if you do not give into our demands"

Bruce is pissed off at himself for losing another partner. He's taking it hard and doesn't want to remind himself...or he'll lose himself to the darkness again.

Doctor what should bother Batman is "WHERE THE FUCK IS WALLY WEST???!!!"

The JLA and JSA should be looking for him instead of fucking around with The old and tired Legion of Super Jabronies.

Truth.

Thats because half the time it isn't.

But at least we can reasonably discuss DC comics in this thread. Unlike some other places around here...

I should start posting reviews for the Marvel books I read. :p

Why does Batman still have a Jason Todd shrine? After all, he's back.

I saw a really, really funny cartoon that mocked this once, but I can't find it now. Sadnesses. :(

But yeah, that's ridiculous. Why does Bruce have a shrine to the living Robin who he refers to as "Just another piece of dirt on the streets"?

Exactly, it's just weird. And creepy. It's creepy, too.

Jason Todd's memorium is still there so it can get smashed dramatically 18 times per year.

Seriously over the last almost 2 decades it must have been smashed at least a 100 times.
