I teach high school English; we have those ridiculous state standardized tests. Kids who read a lot tend to do much better. (even on Math- weird, I know)

I think they're are two reasons for that. ONe, kids who read more are generally more studious, I have nothing to back this up, but when I was in highschool the people who were morons and didn't do anything, weren't reading books. Book readers are likely more intelligent in all areas then non book readers. Also, I read a study, that mental stimulation in one area will increase performane in all areas. So you read a lot you are stimulating your mind and making it stronger and better, so that everything is a bit easier. It won't help as much with math as actually studying math would, but it will help a bit.

Definitely! In addition, your vocabulary goes through the roof when you read. Especially......comic books- it's true! In high school, your brain is in the midst of growth, so that stimulation is crucial. I didn't know all of the above- good stuff.

MI: That quote came from a panel I was on at Wondercon. I was responding to a retailer who felt that the way Supergirl dresses made the book inappropriate for her to recommend to mothers with young daughters. I said that given Kara's age, I felt we should temper her appearance a bit so that younger and older readers alike can enjoy her adventures without parents having to worry. Not that there's a wrong or right way to approach things like this--it's just a matter of individual preference.

I wasnt commenting on the quality, I didnt read beyond the first issue of Picoult's run, I was just kinda joking, since Rich said Picoult writing Wonder Woman would be the biggest comic of the year, when in fact, it does not appear to have made anywhere near that kind of splash.

Come on! Booster Gold! Black Adam! 3 Buseik-penned Superman issues in one month! Giffen doing a 52 Epilogue! And three McKeever issues! This is going to rule.

The thing is, outside of DC fanboyishness, I have really similar opinions of books to Ray. I'm not sure how to take his opinion of Captain Marvel, not sure if I'd really consider him DC.

I would. Johns made Cap work beautifully in the DCU over in JSA. That's the Captain Marvel I love. That and Ordway's in Power of Shazam. This is just...meh.

I'm only buying the books I know will be solid. Instead of three Busiek Superman issues, I'll just buy an Astro City trade. Booster Gold sounds interesting, but I'll wait for the trade on that. I don't know anything about the creative team on Black Adam, and I don't buy books for the character. And I only see two McKeever books (Countdown and Titans.)

A and B are the best of the bunch. Green Lantern Corps is Dave Gibbons trying to make people forget how great Watchmen was, by writing a boring comic book, Flash doesnt become readable until #9.

Hopefully the second Johns issue will advance the story a lot, much like the first one did.

its not really a problem but its one of my internet pet peeves. its the most obnoxious thing in the world to me to post about a book i love and have some anonymous figure who hasnt read the book start tearing it up because of the publisher. i dont have a problem with people that prefer marvel or even the people that dont read a single dc title. its really just the ones who are willing to critique a comic based on an unprofessional summary on the internet, or who think they can predict how shitty a story is going to be before its even solicited.

But then again, isn't this a different version of the Legion than the comic being published by DC right now??? And I guess Barry's children, the Tornado Twins (I think), never met up with the Legion? And I really hate reading all the negativity. It makes me a sad panda.

its not really a problem but its one of my internet pet peeves. its the most obnoxious thing in the world to me to post about a book i love and have some anonymous figure who hasnt read the book start tearing it up because of the publisher. i dont have a problem with people that prefer marvel or even the people that dont read a single dc title. its really just the ones who are willing to critique a comic based on an unprofessional summary on the internet, or who think they can predict how shitty a story is going to be before its even solicited.

i know its the internet and that kind of stuff happens everywhere all the time but it does get me down and make me not want to post sometimes. and thats everyones loss
Ah I thought you meant someone who read mostly Marvel books such as myself.

What your describing is a jerk. None of those here except Matt.

No, you're right. What I really meant was that there's not a strong buildup of stories. There is some background elements that are leading somewhere, but we've yet to see much for payoff, at this point.

I'm about equal, I think.

So i've got a choice tonight to make and i can't do it.

I've got 4 choices of books to get caught up on in the DCU after my Marvelous weekend reading marathon.

They are

A) Detective Comics # 821-832
B) Batman # 655-665
C) Green Lantern Corps # 1-12
D) Flash : The Fastest Man Alive # 1-12

What shall it be???

Detective Comics, without a doubt.

Oh and you guys have figured out the Lightning Saga conclusion by now right?

Lightning Lad?

Bwahahahaaha!

Come on boys it's clearly the return of....Barry Allen.

Like Ray said, has to happen in his main title.

oh please no.
Wally? Cool. Barry? Eh..

Yep. Barry Allen is best as an icon. He was great in JLA: Year One, but he shouldn't be back permanantly.

[HIDE]I'm just thinking that the Legion has absolutely no connection to Barry Allen.

But it's Didio..... he probably wouldn't care.....

The art's been nice, and there have been a bunch of really cool set pieces, but it feels like a bunch of cool ideas in search of a story.

Hopefully the second Johns issue will advance the story a lot, much like the first one did.

I can't believe they only gave this arc five issues. I can't imagine it won't feel scrunched.

Matt O'Keefe
05-22-2007, 11:36 AM
I respectfully disagree, Dave Mckean would have meant great art with a shitty story. I don't have a problem with prose, but that particular piece of it wasn't very good.

Yeah. I was excited for the prose story, but it was really disappointing for me as well.

I think you made the correct choice.

Dan Didio was the ultimate web-weaver, I guess you would say, in that he cast us all in various roles in "Countdown." He had ideas in mind for writers or writer teams he'd like to bring into the mix the same way he had ideas for artists. He came to me with the intent of taking what was, at that time, the skeleton ideas for "Countdown" and giving them to me and getting us all into a discussion of where we could go with these storylines. Once I heard what he had planned, that started my imagination working and got me thinking it would be fun to bring in this element or something here for silver age fans, stuff like that.

Batman # 655-658 The Batman & Son Arc by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert.

Well...that was, what's the word i'm looking for? Fluffy :?

It's a popcorn book through and through and reading all 4 issues in a whopping half hour there's not all that much to hate but the sensation i had reading it was that it didn't feel all that important. Now clearly i must be mistaken because the Joker gets shot in the face and Bruce Wayne is revealed to have fathered a child (Batman not doing a blood test or even alluding to one was mighty peculiar though). These are pretty major developments but it didn't feel "real" to me for a second. I can't explain why exactly. The less said about the Big Joker vs "Batman" scene that doesn't make a lick of sense until the dialogue fills you in several pages later the better.

On the plus side Andy Kubert does a fine job on pencils and the book flows pretty well but again Batman just doesn't feel right to me. Damien comes in and beats the shit out of Alfred and Robin even forcing surgery!!! on Tim for chrissakes and Batman essentially shrugs his shoulders and brings him to confront Talia anyway because well the plot demands it. I like the Ninja Man-Bats "sub-plot" and they're a fun visual treat but the whole arc just doesn't feel as consequential as it should.

This really is a book that's missing well...Oomph!

Still a solid 6/10. Up next the 4 parter by Ostrander and Mandrake.

I just remember growing up on their romance as a kid with the reprints. Really the first love story I'd ever read, so I'm probably pretty biased. And George Stacy dying added a lot of depth to her character, just read that again a couple nights ago.

That seems silly. A vow to talk about something is understandable, but you should at least be able to state the subject of what you aren't talking about The subject, and subject only. And maybe reasons why not to talk about it.

How else am I supposed to know what subjects not to bring up?

That makes too much sense:x

I vowed not to mention Sins Past

I've pretty much vowed not to talk about that with Glenn. We each have our own opinions, and it's best not to even discuss it.

I was careful. I planned to do 10, but I decided 4 would be sufficient:D

BTW, just read the first Animal Man trade. Great stuff.

I read volume 2 of Animal Man the other day (after getting it for pretty cheap at the shop). Needless to say, I've ordered the rest.

Only 3 or 4 volumes, right? There are so many books I need to get caught up on. Once I finish YTLM I'm diving into Ex Machina so I can read it monthly soon.
