Man, unlike everyone else in the world, I would LOVE to be on a jury. You get to decide someone's fate! That's fucking awesome. Unfortunately, as a lawyer, I'll never get put on one. Live the dream, dude.

Lord, I hate jury duty. I hate it so much, I wrote a script about how much the system sucks. :)

I had jury duty last year, and it was fucking intense. 3 day trial in which we had to decide an obvious criminal's fate based on the testimony of an obvious drug addict.
It dragged on because, despite the fact that the evidence was clear, a few of the jurors just wouldn't put aside their hesitancy to strictly decide based on the evidence and testimony at hand.
9 of out 12 of us voted guilty by the middle of the 3rd day, and we had to stay for 6 more hours, basically trying to see what it would take for the other 3 to decide, as the 9 of us were very solid in our stances.
In the end he was pronounced guilty, but it didn't feel good by any means. Very heavy feeling, and I left the courthouse completely drained and exhausted.
Sorry...probably not the amusing anecdote you're looking for. :)

I don't think they will let you read while waiting in the jury pool. Friend of mine tried that and got chewed out by the judge. But hope the case is interesting, at least!

You can't do much while you're in the courtroom choosing the jury. But in the waiting room beforehand, which I sat in for HOURS, you could do whatever.

When I was on an assault and battery jury, we asked the judge to define the definition of the charges, and he said he couldn't do it. The lawyer had to. We also got to watch the defendant, in his jail suit, defend himself by questioning his accuser, his ex-girlfriend. The judge interrupted him more than once to say he couldn't state things in a certain way.
We also got to watch a judge throw out a vehicular charge because the officer arrived late and then berate the officer in front of the jury pool.
I had fun. Take a book though. If you're not picked for a jury, you have time to kill before the next case and jury drawing.
Wear a Punisher shirt to it and you'll get thrown out on a peremptory challenge.

If you're single, it's a great place to meet chicks!

Back in the day, I met a cute girl at my first ever taste of jury duty. We hit it off and got picked for the same case. My one regret (at the time) was that I never asked her for her number. It was one of those moments when you think back later and go, "Damn! What was I thinking?!"

I have jury duty next Wednesday. I've never had it before and I'm really not looking forward to it since I have to go to Camden. I'm hoping I'll luck out and when I call the night before I'll find out I don't have to go. I don't have good luck though so I know it won't happen.

If you pick up any women in Camden, make sure they're not the ones on trial. :)

I'm married, and happily so. The way I see it, it actually worked out better for me this way. But thanks for the advice.

I don't think my girlfriend would appreciate me trying to pick up any women in Camden. Not that I'd want to anyway :) I need to move to another county so I don't have to go to Camden for jury duty.

Jury duty is AWESOME!!!!!
Of course...this is assuming that one has a job that provides paid leave for said civic duty.
I got called in last year, and it ended up being a murder case. All I had to do was contradict myself during the interview by the Defense Attorney...and, voila!!! Paid day off!!
Scary stuff, in retrospect.

Arrgh damnit! I have to report tomorrow morning  I bet that Ft. Dix thing today messed up the schedule. It said all jurors have to report.

I have a sad, pathetic story. When I had jury duty, me and this really hot chick kept flirting with each other. The first day, she kept bending over in the seat to grab stuff from her purse, and her thong kept kind of coming out. Now, this lasted for about 2 days, and neither of us got picked for jury duty, but I walked her out to her car after we were dismissed, and did not have the balls enough to ask for her phone number, even though she stood there for a good minute and a half. I just said "well, see ya around" and took off...Yup, I am a fucking retard.

I had jury duty last fall and ended up the foreman on a murder case. It was a really interesting experience. We even ended up sequestered for a night.

Woo hoo! They let everybody out at 11:30  Not a single person got called but for some reason everybody still had to report today. Looks like I went to bed early last night and woke up early this morning for no reason. Oh well. I've still got time to watch 28 Days Later before my girlfriend gets home from work.

I've been called up twice so far. Both times I was called up around Christmas time and my number was so high anyway that I didn't have to go.
People say I have been "lucky."

If you're lucky. My uncle gets things in the mail for jury duty all the time but he never has to go. His area doesn't have their own post office so they get their mail from the same post office as me which is in Camden County. However where he lives is Gloucester County. Every time he gets the jury duty thing in the mail its always for Camden County so he just calls them up and tells them he lives in Gloucester County, not Camden County so he gets excused.
I forgot to mention the funny moment that happened during the "You The Juror" training video today. In the middle of it the screen messed up and Dr. Phil came on for a few seconds. It looks like somebody accidently taped over some of the video and they never bothered to get a new one. They must only have the one copy :)

My only problem with it was because of some sort of glitch, I kept getting it while I was in school. (Back when you could get out of it for that.) So I got the notice 3 times in a six month period and every time I had to go and wait for hours to explain the problem. It was a big pain.
I also got it last fall, had to report three days, got selected for a trial, and then released before it started. I figured they decided to settle.
