Hi David Mack,
I met you this past weekend on Saturday at the Pittsburgh Comic Con. At first I mostly inquired as to where Andy Lee was because I thought I was on the last leg of my year long quest to find him and get him to do another comission for me. Seems he eluded me yet again.
I'll be honest. I'm not much into comics usually and I wasn't familiar with your work. The list of comics that I've read and enjoyed greatly is rather small (Gaiman's Sandman, Moore's Swamp Thing, the end). However, I decided that since Andy wasn't there and you were, it was probably supposed to happen like that so I looked at your work.
I dismissed the comics at first because I'm usually more into the art prints than the comics themselves. I was instantly and easily blown away by your prints, especially the flattened out cube girl print (which you explained to be the cover of Kabuki The Alchemy #5). I also enjoyed your painting of Death.
I knew I was going to buy both prints but I decided to take a stab at your comics too for a couple reasons:
1) The art was awesome.
2) Just from skimming through a few pages it was obvious that your style and delivery was anything but the standard comic book style. Refreshing.
3) You seemed like a nice guy. Also refreshing.
You worked out some kind of deal and I ended up getting all the comics in The Alchemy plus the prints (I appreciate your generosity).
I've read them all now and let's just say I was very pleasantly surprised. There's way too much of the story / telling style / art that I liked for me to pinpoint everything but I will say that the recurring themes in the issues (bathroom door symbols, airplanes, 3D flat cubes, etc) was simply awesome. It gave each issue an identity and a rhythm that really spoke to me. The idea of the cubes themselves was really great. When she was inside the Kappa suit peering out, and you drew her peering out of the cube as well was fantastic. MC Square / her dress represented with graph paper was brilliant. I almost cried reading Shy Creatures and I have no idea why. Something stirred from my childhood I think. The list goes on.
Needless to say you've got a new reader. I've got my girlfriend reading the Alchemy now and I plan on hunting down the trades for the previous volumes soon. Looking forward to the Alchemy #9.
I just wanted to thank you again and let you know how it all turned out.
Welcome to my very short list.
Thanks for reminding me to get off the couch and do something.
