View Full Version : Ok--I wasn't sure where to ask this, or who to ask this of...

I just had a photo taken of me with a creator this weekend, and I thought a couple people here would get a kick out of it.
But I'm not sure what the rules are regarding that, so I thought I'd just post and ask if that's ok...
...and secondly, I have no idea how to post photos here. So, anyone who knows how, if you could shoot me a message with details, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Did you just wake up there?
No... I just never smile on the spot very well, and it leads to my eyes looking like they're constantly shut.
And my hair, no matter how I comb it, doesn't stay put.

Neil had a signing at Joseph Beth in Lexington, KY. I was lucky enough to get him to sign my copy of American Gods and Miracleman trade.

pretty much a full house, though for montana events that's not always saying much.
and i'll repost a recap i did elsewhere:
In what became almost a 9 hour stay in Helena (drive and other things considered), I did indeed meet Neil Gaiman.
Notes of interest:
1) People came from Wyoming and Salt Lake City to participate as well--and were instantly mocked.
2) A little girl impressed me with her bravery, by actually asking Neil a question during his q & a session--and I thought it was one of the stronger ones. "What's happening with the Coraline movie", etc, etc...
3) I managed to ask one as well, but in typical 'me in front of crowds' fashion blanked on it 15 seconds before he chose me, and sat there thinking 'something something difficulty in writing something dialogue OH FUCK HE PICKED ME'...and that's when the light went on.
I didn't stutter or pass out. Somehow.
4) Another guy made me think he would, though. He got his leather jacket signed, with a Neil drawing of Dream, and practically went skipping out the door shrieking "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD".
To which my friend Misty responded "I do have an inhaler..."
5) Misty and I both amused Neil in our own ways--she told him that a comment he'd made in the short story he read to us (previously unreleased and unread to anyone but our audience, to my understanding) about the Second Coming Of Jesus--which, with her having hearing issues, took to mean "The Second Coming of Thesis."
The significance: she's a Masters student in physical anthropology.
6) I got "Kindly Ones", the best Sandman trade in my opinion signed, the "Endless Nights" hardcover signed , and I was literally the only person in the audience who had a copy of "Signal to Noise", which amused Neil, and he commented about how Dave had to pretty much recreate the book as the film they had was corrupted.
So, evidently, my last second decision to find the most obscure Gaiman work I had paid off.
And the question I ended up asking was "what's the most difficult aspect of writing, in your opinion?", and, "how do you get past your primary characters sounding exactly like your secondary characters?"
His response to 1: you and a blank sheet. Heh. 2: "Shut up and listen." Which led into a vague discussion of his time as a journalist and how he used that time to tape conversations and listen to how people frame their words.
So, if I ever clear the time this next year, I'll try for a columnist position somewhere around here via internship, though being a non-journalism major hampers me.

Yeah, he's a really great guy--helped make my 'first official famous person ever' meeting go a little more smoothly.
