DC needs to do things RIGHT NOW:

1) Hire the Professor for Batman covers for Dini's run
2) Fire Dan Didio

In that order.

what's this dudes deal?

he is way above and beyond some pro-artists that i can think of. why isn't he doing a big 2 book? or, is he? i can't remember seeing "professor oreo" at the bottom of any comic i've read.

if he isn't doing pro-work, does anyone know why not?

Some artists don't like to do sequentials (not saying he doesn't, but some don't), but that still doesn't explain why they haven't hired him as a cover artist.

because the people at dc and marvel responsible for hiring cover artists are blind? from my understanding, he's gone to conventions to show his work off in the past. so it's not like no one at the big 2 haven't seen his art.

WOW! Thanks for this awesome thread! I love you guys! :D

Just to clear a few things up...

I'm American - born and raised in the San Fernando Valley in California, but I moved to VancouverWashington almost a year ago. The Vancouver part is probably why it might seem like I'm Canadian. Hell, I had no idea there was a VancouverWA until I moved here. ;)

The reason I'm not working for Marvel or DC is because they won't hire me. Simple as that.

I've shown Marvel my work on several different occasions and I even had a well known Marvel artist pass my work along to right people as well. But Marvel doesn't call me, so there's not much else I can do besides try and make a name for myself elsewhere and use that as leverage to encourage them to give me a shot.

DC on the other hand says that they don't hire cover artists... period. From the lips of Dan Didio himself, DC does not hire any new cover artists while they still have guys like Adam Hughes on payroll. They consider cover art as the dream gig and you have to earn the right to do them. How do you earn that right? I have no clue…

So while it's a bit frustrating that it's so hard get your foot in the door, it's things like this thread that keep encouraging me to work harder to change all of their minds. Thanks guys! And extra special thanks to turtle guard for staring this thread! You rock man!

This industry is incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately, there's still a lot of "Good Ole' Boys" networking keeping less talented or just outright schmucks employed. But honestly, I'm sure Walter can probably push his art skills in other publications and get lots of work and representation. Hopefully, one day, one of the comic publishers' editors will come begging for his work, he'll get a prime rate, but will be too busy getting work from other places to fit it in his schedule.

When I hear stories like this, it's discouraging for myself, because I've not HALF the artist this dude is, and makes me wonder if Millar was right about talented folks leaving comics or just giving up on comics and getting more $ and better work in Hollywood anyway. :(

DC showed some interest but at the time I was too busy and didnt have enough portfolio work to show off to them. They asked me to stay in touch and get back to them when i had more work to show. We'll see what happens when the book im working on drops.

Technically I can't offer prints of any of my comic stuff because I don't have permission to use the licensed charcters. However the Ol' Scratch painting I did for The Shiflett Bros is being made into a limited edition print and both the bros and I are gonna sign them all. They should be available within a few weeks. I'll let you know. The edition size is going to be rather small so they might sell out pretty quickly, and I'll even be drawing sketches on a handful of them to make 'em ultra special.
