I second Kabuki.
What do you like? Commercial or Indies?
For the commercial stuff, I'd say Astonishing X-men and Ultimate Spiderman. Mature commercial, say Lucifer or Books of Magic.
Indie? Try Strangers in Paradise, Lackluster World, Sentinels, or QUANTUM: Rock of Ages.

Because your on a limited budget do you prefer to get stuff that makes you examine yourself like you say more often then others? And do you like stuff that is just plain fun or is that usally a waste of your time.

I'll third (or whatever at this point) Kabuki.
The art is absolutely gorgeous, the story moving, and available in a nice series of trades. It's indy enough for your sensibilities, there's no super-heroics, and no sci-fi.
I'll also recommend Strangers in Paradise, because I always recommend it to everyone. Available in pocket book format, they're really affordable and have such an incredible story. I also remember you asking about overweight female characters in comics, Goddard, and Francine is on the full-figured side.
(And this is someone who's currently reading Tomine's Sleepwalker.)

Have you read Jane's World before? It started off as a reprinted web comic, but has evolved into (as of issue #13) a standard comic format. The story also opened up at that point switching from a gag-a-day/storyline format to an actual ongoing story. it's still fun, and the art is steadily improving but still sketchy in a Tom Batiuk/Charles Shultz sort of style. (And I don't throw the Shultz reference around lightly, the writer/artisit actually worked with him.)
The main character is the closest thing to a lesbian version od Charlie Brown that I've ever seen. ..uhm, not that I've seen that many.
It is available in trades from Girl Twirl Comics, thru Diamond. I highly reccomend it, especially after the format change.

This is not an ongoing series but a mini. Try out Spider-Man/Human Torch.
Reason I like it is because it reminds me of the old days, and you get to see some beloved characters again like Gwen, and Captain Stacy. Also there are a lot of funny moments between Johnny and Peter but, you get to see some of the serious side to the two. Slott writes them well, and I like the art a lot.
Marvel Knights Daredevil: Before I picked this up I really was not into Daredevil, I read issues where him and Spider-Man teamed up and I liked those. Then I viewed the features of all the creators that worked on the comic on the DVD which included Bendis' interview, and I became more curious , but what finally got me to the book is hearing how good it was on different sites and it is also written by one of my favorite writers, so I decided to give it a shot. I have enjoyed it ever since and I will soon be getting the Essentials and Millar's run. MK Daredevil really got me interested into the character. Also the dark, gritty art by Maleev is beautiful.

I got the first True Story Swear to God TPB (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1932051090//ref=nosim/jinxworld-20) a couple weeks back. I was surprised how fucking engrosing it was.
It's an Auto-Bio book where big stuff happens, life changes & whatnot, and myself, being a guy working on an auto-bio book where nothing happens, I'm jealous as fuck.
I described it to someone else as Box Office Poison style emotion with much less angst. (I'm not sure where you stand on angst).
Back on the backup board I pointed you to Isaac the Pirate (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1561633666//ref=nosim/jinxworld-20) , It's not at all the type of book I usually like but it's just so well done, old school storytelling... I couldn't put it down.
A painter goes on a short trip to make some money so he can marry his fiance & ends up on a pirate ship on a long long trip. vol 2 is either just out or coming soon.
And End Times: Tiempos Finales (http://www.samhiti.com/?page=store&item=6) by sam Hiti, part one of a giant supernatural saga. Leone style Holy-man vs Lovecraft style demons in an old world mexican town. It's a really good looking book, good read. Plus I met this guy last year (or early this year, can't remember) and he cares less for superheroes than you do... maybe.

Have you tried Archie? it's a fantastic gateway into a whole new world of comics. You have Archie, the classic American teenage boy. He's always having girl trouble, school trouble, car trouble or some combination thereof. There's Veronica, the rich snob, and Betty, the more wholesome, slightly tomboyish one. Then you have Jughead, Reggie, Mr. Weatherbee and all the rest, rounding out one of the most solid casts in any comic anywhere.
It's not sci-fi, it's not goth and there's not a cape to be found. Should be right up your alley.

Achie's a comic where nobody ages, develops, are profoundly changes, when each new storyline presents a problem/struggle/sollution format, done by a rotating cast of disposable creators
Archie is sooooo superhero

The Adventures of Barry Ween- Boy Genius
It's the funniest comic book that I've ever read, and Barry Ween has become my second favorite comic book character ever after Spider-Man.
Lone Wolf & Cub
Excellent battles, and drama in the famed manga about an assassin, and his three year old son. There's a great back story regarding his war with the Yagyu.
Alan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing
Reads a lot like Sandman (especially the issue in which Abby meets Cain & Abel). A lot of great horror stories, and an excellent romance.
Tim Truman's Hawkworld
Sci fi revenge saga.

It's a great read! Trade should be out soon
Deep Sleeper by Phil Hester & Mike Huddleston.
Deep Sleeper is Phil Hester and Mike Huddleston's follow-up to The Coffin, an excellent book which I strongly recommend you track down in trade paperback.
This isn't a sequel, but another horror story. Whereas The Coffin kept to a somewhat creepy spin on a superhero story (a corpse trapped in a suit of armour which prevented the soul from departing), Deep Sleeper goes for a much weirder angle. Cole is a struggling writer plagued by nightmares, whose life gets much weirder when he comes across a supposed self-help guru who appears to have jumped the line from one of his own stories.
Floating around multiple layers of reality - the real world, Cole's dreams, and what's supposed to be his fiction - the story doesn't make a tremendous amount of linear sense. But in this case, that's not a problem. Cole's reactions keep the story anchored, and build the story around the idea that something inexplicably horrible is going on in his mind, even if he can't quite place how or why. It plays on our lack of control of our minds, and turns deliberate vagueness to its advantage very effectively.
Huddleston's art shifts with ease from the relatively normal visuals of the real world into the utterly surreal images from Cole's dreams - the double page spread at the beginning of the issue is inexplicable, but fantastic. There's also a nice touch in changing the style of greytones for the fictional sections, which at first seems to clearly mark them out before the levels of reality start to collapse.
It's an enigmatic book, but it leaves you with the unavoidable impression that something very horrible is lurking in here, if only you understood what it was. Very promising.
Coffin kicks ass too!!!

Sci Fi fan or not, Frank Miller's Ronin is a comic masterpiece that any intelligent reader of comics should enjoy. It is dark though. Not gothy, just a bleak future kinda thing. But the Sci Fi is really to a min. theres no aliens, spaceships etc. Plus it spans over a long period of time to a lone wolf and cubesque Japan to a futuristic America (i think).
Trust me, give it a try. I found all the issues in good enough shape in a dollar bin, and was blown away. Hope you can be too.

Gotham Central. Excellent writing and an interesting look at the other side of superhero/police relations. One of the best. Two trades, and a third on the way.
Fables. Great take on classics. You like trades, there are five of them.

jacob, i dont give a fuck if you dont like superheros, but i think that if i ask you to do this one fucking thing, then you should get it... i dunno if its in trade yet, but pick up the first arc of astonishing xmen, and read it with an open mind... it truly has some of the best characterization ive seen in a comic in a good while, and it doesnt disregard continuity, it incluides it in a way that feels natural... the art is also something to behold...
and yes asshole, this is one of the serious ones...
:kisses:
Hellshock, it's not a superhero story. It's the best artwork Jae Lee's ever done and his writing is so good, it's a mystery why he draws comics for inferior writers instead of writing more himself. I think the tpb just came out.

Capote in Kansas, an OGN by Ande Parks and Chris Samnee. It's not out yet, although it was available at SDCC.
Fourth Rail has a nice review here (http://www.thefourthrail.com/reviews/snapjudgments/071105/capoteinkansas.shtml) .
I'm recommending this on the strength of Ande's previous work and the fact that Samnee's art looks amazing.

if they managed to get that some of the best characterization without spandex tights, perky tits, people shooting shit out of their fingertips, and "the epic struggle between good and evil", i'd probably check it out

Well, from the best I can remember there's no fingertip firing stuff, and no epic struggle between good and evil. But yeah, Emma's perky breasts, and yeah, they brought back the spandex.
It's pretty good though.

Supreme Power.
And, no, I'm not posting this to get you to do your cute superhero-comics-bashing bit. If you gave it a chance, you'd love it. I swear to God.
