View Full Version : A Little About What I Do These Days

Over in a post on Brian's boards, Thommy Melanson asked...

"Hey C.B. -

- obviously you're currently editing Powers for Icon, but other than that, are you solely just writing for Marvel nowadays, or do you have a kind of murky, hard-to-define position at the company?

Are you involved with the upcoming Dabel Bros. projects at M?"

Which provides the perfect lead in for me to explain what I do and what I like...

Yes, I edit Powers, and I love it! It's the only book I edit as I gave up the editor gig a few years back. Brian roped me into this one and it was an offer I couldn't refuse. I do it out of love for the title and my friendship with Brian and Mike.

My main gig these days is as a writer. I'm writing Loners for Marvel, and the Fairy Tales series. Spider-Man Fairy Tales starts in May and runs for four issues and rolls right into Avengers Fairy Tales for four issues. I'm also writing the Sister Grimm one-shot for their Mystic Arcana event. I have a few other small things for Marvel but nothing I can talk about just yet. I continue to pitch for them and some day I will write Cloak and Dagger! :)

I'm also writing Drain, Wonderlost and Compass, which are coming out from Image. Drain 3 hits April 18th, Wonderlost 2 is on sale this July, and Compass will start in the fall.

I also did a short story in 24seven 2 with Nuno Plati, and a Fear Agent short for Rick Remender with Tommy Ohtsuka. There are a couple other things I have in the works, but I'm about at maximum capacity now.

I also just got back from Tokyo where I was hired on as a story consultant on an anime series by a major studio there. It's a whole new world for me and is quite an educational and eye-opening experience. More on that when I can talk about it.

I also still do serve as a consultant for Marvel on talent matters. I guess you can think of me as their A&R guy. I help them out with pencilers, inkers, colorists and painters, keeping an eye out for new talent, traveling to shows to meet folks and review portfoilios, and working on recruiting new artists for their books.

I'm not involved in any of the Dabel's stuff, unless reading their books counts!

I love Star Wars and collect Japanese SW memoribilia.
I think Kate Beckinsale in the hottest woman in the world.
I read almost every comic that comes out which is why I'm poor.
I love manga, current translated favorites being Monster, Bleach, Genshiken, and Kurosagi CDS.
I have too many favorite artists to name but would kill to work with Katsuhiro Otomo or Hiroaki Samura.
I'm an old fogie listen to mostly classic rock.
My idols include George Lucas, Akira Kurosawa, John Hughes, Jim Morrison and Quentin Tarantino.
My favorite food is buffalo wings.

Nice to meet you all!

Interesting. You were not on my radar until you posted about Loners last week, and I am glad you did. It sounds like you do quite a bit for Marvel and have a good time doing it.

I had the great pleasure of meeting CB over at Wizard World Texas last year. The funny thing about it is that he knew who I was before I recognized who he was!

At any rate, CB, I'm enjoying the work. I'm hooked on Loners, especially. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

See you at the next con...

Pat

As much as I cringe using the word "classy", C.B. has been nothing but in my ham-handed attempts to get anyone at Marvel to acknowledge that I am the future of comicbook writing.

Check out his Spidey Unlimited tale, X-Men Fairy Tales, and The Loners (my new favorite title) and you'll see the dude's got mad skillz, yo.

Um, word.

Thank you for the peak behind the curtain.

I continue to pitch for them and some day I will write Cloak and Dagger! :)

Oh yes, please!

I'm an old fogie listen to mostly classic rock.

You and me both.

Nice to meet you all!

Nice to meet you! Thank you for the rundown. I'm getting more and more into creator-owned stuff, so I will check out some of your Image work. I'm also a dyed-in-the-wool New Warriors fan, and am awaiting the delivery of the first issue of Loners. It looks good and I love the 12-step angle.

(I don't think I've ever used the expression "dyed-in-the-wool" before.)

Any movement with Marvel on the writing front?

Thanks, Thommy!!

Any movement with Marvel on the writing front?

I've actually not submitted anything to Marvel in quite a long stretch.

Couple months ago, I began working on a three-issue Punisher mini-series pitch that I think would be quite the entertaining romp through Frank's psyche.

Loika agreed to draw five or so pages for the pitch package, and I have an Eagle-nominated inker and letterer in line to help out too.

Haven't tended to it as of late, because more easily-attainable goals have taken precedence.

I should get back to working on it...just gotta make sure it's note-perfect.

The story's a real gauntlet thrower-downer if I get it right.

Was planning on having Torres and some other writer pals give it a read once I finished it for feedback before I send it up to 5th Avenue.

Too bad the Spidey and X-Men Unlimited series have folded...they were a nice effort on Marvel's part to give new talent a foot in the door.

not sure if you remember me, we talked a little bit last year in chicago and i asked about manga/comics crossovers during the cup o' joe panel.

just wanted to say i'm really looking forward to compass and shiki. love the little bit of art i've seen and the stories sound really good. i also loved marvel mangaverse and the fairy tales line.

congrats on the forum and keep up the great work.

Wow, you seem like an awesome person.

I've been meaning to give 'Loners' a shot, so I'll probably pick up the first issue sometime this weekend. =]

Having only gotten back into comics recently, Loners was one of the first I picked up. Mostly from reading about it hear on the board. And I am very happy I did. You did some excelent work, and I am definately hooked.

I had the pleasure of sitting next to C.B. (also Tim Smith and Paul Azaceta) all weekend in Artist Alley at the Wizard Phillie comic con last year. All around cool guy.

All the writings regarding Mr. Cebulski paint him to be a really nice and cool guy.

Very interested to know about the anime he is working on (anime fan here) and any upcoming stuff.

EDIT: Mr. Cebulski, have you seen this? (though I don't think Otomo is directly involved)

Though it DOES look like he is directly involved with this...

i really love otomo. akira was one of the first animes i ever saw and i have to watch it once a year. memories reminded me of heavy metal with it's themes. metropolis had some wonderfull animation and steamboy was fun to watch.

i haven't read blade of the immortal. i'll have to pick it up sometime

what's your favorite kurosawa film? from the few that i've seen, mine's either throne of blood or ran. i love his take on macbeth and king lear.

Hell yeah. You, my friend, just got a new reader for Loners with that statement.

And let me say this, take a quick 6 hour drive from NYC to Rochester and go to Jeremiah's and The Distillery, the two best places for buffalo wings in Rochester. I've been living downstate, on Long Island, for the past year, and there is nothing I've found that can compare to upstate wings. Maybe there is someplace in the City with good wings, but I doubt it.
