Not sure if this is a long term thing, but it's good news nonetheless.

Well this is definitely going to throw more gasoline on the fire.

There have been skeptics that felt that the Stem-Cell potential was exaggerated. But this is a substantial breakthrough. One that can't be ignored.

Seems to be just a theory to me. I have no actual knowledge of science to base that on, but I choose to believe it anyway. There's no need to investigate this further, and anyone that believes it is just falling for the hype.

If this experiment can be recreated several times over, by independent scientists, it starts to become less Theory and More Fact. This is Step one.

Is it Fetuses? or Feti?

It still pisses me the fuck off that we have CURES for crippling diseases now, and the only thing stopping us from USING these cures is arguing about whether aborting feti is right or wrong.

I just can't fathom it. It's mind-boggling.

I read this article earlier tonight and I'm confused (not the first time). I don't see what this has to do with embryonic stem cell research. Did it not say the stem cells were taken from the patients' own blood? If so, I don't see where this says anything about the more controversial stem cell research.

it's controversial because the act of using stem cells is producing results, which will lead people to campaign for the wider use of various types of stem cells.

Because embryonic stem cells are much more "potent" than other types. So if we get good results with the adult stem cells, then the results from embryonic cells could be phenomenal.

I guess I'll clarify, just to be safe: the words "abortion" and "fetus" have appeared in this thread, and I can't quite tell what level of irony that was done with.

There's no abortions, but there are Feti. Okay, there aren't really Feti either because the eggs are still in the embryonic stage when they do stem cell research (I think). But considering the moral arguments, the term Fetus is appropriate enough.

The circumstances in which the embryos are generated are significantly different from an abortion, though.

The thing that gets me is the proposed research would be conducted on surplus fetuses. Bush is protecting those fetuses, which, when they go unused, are destroyed anyway. Bush would rather those fetuses be destroyed because they've outlived their freshness date than used in stem cell research. How hot is that?

Yes it silly isn't it? The vast majority of those eggs are going to be destroyed anyway. But the people opposed to the research would rather see them destroyed pointlessly rather than them being used to save people's lives.

I know. And whether or not aborting fetuses is right or wrong isn't even at issue, as we procure the stem cells from already aborted fetuses, but do not abort fetuses to procure stem cells.

Talk to your doctor and see if there's a chance to get on a test study? Lab results are one thing, and as promising as they sound what ultimately counts are the human trials. Might be scary, but it might also be great.

And one more nit-picky annoying thing, at this point the idea is hypothesis. Scientists hypothesize that stem cells can be used to treat and cure type 1 diabetes. When they run multiple trials that support the hypothesis, it'll be theory. I think there are maybe 4 things in science that are considered actual fact. Doctors and scientists are real wusses when it comes to saying anything definite.

Again, they aren't fetuses. They're embryos. Those are different things. And there was no abortion involved. It needlessly complicates the issue to use those words.

(And, on the other end of the spectrum, embryos aren't just eggs either.)

Got me there. 13 out of 15 is a good start, but it'll take a lot more studies before this becomes a recognized treatment.

2. Nothing is definite
