After doing some reading up on popular conspiracy theories,I came across something called the Montauk Project.
Upon first reading,I immediately called bullshit.I mean seriously, the events these authors claim occurred sound like something out of a an Ellis or Morrison comic.
I'm just very astonished at the fact that the authors in question have stood by their "fantastic" stories for as long as they have, even having lectures all over the US.
Topics discussed at the site above, other sites and in other books include time travel portals, teleportation, metahumans, psychics able to produce objects out of thin air,a certain facility built over a crack to the earth's core, etc.
Just thought I'd put it out there.Certainly makes for a fun read for us comic fans.

Yeah, it came up in some Lost discussions.
I've also seen 'The Philadelphia Experiment,' so there's that.

The Philadelphia Experiment (not the movie but the legend) is really cool, but all the different alien races and time travel holes in the Montauk Project story just kind of make my head hurt.

One of my favorite Coast 2 Coast topics.

Yeah, there's this big tower thing with a dish on it that you can see from the top of the lighthouse. I was always curious about it. So I looked into it and found some interesting stuff. (I don't even know if the weird building was part of it, but it's what made me look into it.)

Had a brief look at the website... is there anywhere I can get a text based run down of what its all about?
Interested, as you say, from a story aspect... looks 'interesting'

My favorite part is when the monster comes and starts eating the equipment.

I know Wikipedia has a nice rundown in point form, but then again it's Wikipedia.
The parts about going back in time to meet with Jesus was just wow.
There's several video interviews on google video.I can't believe the guy went through a 4 hour interview while keeping a straight face about this stuff.

this sounds rather fantastic. i love reading up on bizarre conspiracy theorists.
Have any of you ever checked out David Icke?
I ran into one of his books back when I worked in a Bookstore in Houston, it is crazy good fun. Filled with theories on Reptilian Humanoids and on controlling Brotherhoods.
His Web site is a pretty large mess, so I'd suggest looking at his Wiki if you wanna see just one man's opinion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Icke
I am so going to have to read more on the Montauk theories

The Montauk project is a pet story device for me-- I luvs it. Some have described it as the central hub of all conspiracy theories...it's a bit like the Kevin Bacon of shadow ideas-- If you look hard enough, everything from Roswell to the JFK assassination can be linked to Montauk.
I've actually got two projects that I'm working on that have Montauk in the background-- one of which, "The Seven Orphans of Montauk" is actually with a Lost writer (so whoever mentioned it upthread, go figure...)--

It's interesting reading. I put absolutely no stock in it as fact, but it's definitely interesting.
