View Full Version : Is music productive for you?
So my bossed just banned music from my job, both with headphones and speakers. I really feel this is a mistake for allot of reasons.
1) I feel more productive with my music, i get more work done and time goes by faster.
2) i dont deal with clients, my work is mostly data entry so it seems like it accomplishes nothing to take away my music.
Ofcourse its my bosses company and he can do and order whatever he pleases but it seems like you get more work done with enjoyment than silence.

I can't keep focus nearly as well if I don't have music.

I'm way more productive with music on. I could see banning streaming audio sites because of bandwidth, but music altogether? What kind of Taliban bullshit is that?

I prefer music to keep my head straight. In silence, my brain tends to run laps around the same idea.

I think your boss made a big mistake. You should all show him how so with you poor output.
Being able to listen to music at work really helps sometimes. I really hope it's never banned at my work...

As long as you get the work done, I dont see why headphones would be bad. I mean, I don't want to listen to your shitty music, but I have no qualms about you listening to it to yourself.

i would lose my shit without it. between innane co-worker babble and the white noise of the air conditioning, I would go crazy. I listen to anything and everything for nearly 75% of my work day...sorry this happened in your workplace.

With a job like data entry, I don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to put on music.
Personally, I find it productive as long as it doesn't distract me. Radiohead or any instrumental music is just right for me.

There have studies which indicate that popular music (any 1-4-5 type ) is counteractive to productivity.

It helps pass the day, that's for sure. As long as the work is getting done, why would anyone care?

I'd say it'd help me with MY music maybe. Everyone elses, less so. Would you work as well if I sat behind you belting out Gwen Stefani?

I can say with no exaggeration that I would be face down asleep on my keyboard right now without my iPod... Music is good for my productivity, yes... :D

I am much more productive at work with music. It gives me something to ease the relentless passage of time without having to take a break from my work (like I am doing RIGHT NOW)

When working for Lowes, or working on pages, I like music because it gets me pumped, energetic and wanting to work so I can move to the beat and such.
I've noticed since my MP3 player broke that my level of energy and productivity at Lowes has gone straight down the crapper.
They used to put a phone receiver next to a radio at night and play some station or CD over the loudspeaker when the store was closed. They took that away and people got slower. Now they listen to personal headphones and productivity picked up. Now they're threatening to take that away because they can't hear pages for themselves and don't call back the bosses.
I promise productivity will go down again if it happens, because they also took away the radio being played while they unload the truck, and now it takes them longer.

Yeah, it was like that when I worked at Braums in high school. I was the best floor scrubber and the entire store floor had to be scrubbed each night. I asked the head manager if I could listen to some music as I did that to help me along better. She approved, but when I listened to Maditory Metallica at 11 each night, one of the asst managers begged me to not play it.
The other asst manager knew i scrubbed the shit out of the floor and did a damn good job, so he always told him to shut his trap. I even voluntared for that job since it was the hardest and took the longest. But with my trusty Metallica, I was always the first to leave after their nightly closing duties. Even the asst manager that couldn't stand Metallica couldn't argue with my work quality and speed.
